Star Stable Online Ride Through has been open for two years now! Can you believe it!?

I hope everyone has been enjoying the new Christmas quests, now that we’ve been assured the game didn’t completely die, haha! I will answer any questions you may have about the Christmas quests but I will not be posting them on the blog. They do give XP this year but their completion is not necessary for progression in the game (i.e. you don’t need to complete them to unlock other quests, though the XP is nice to get).

I am currently working on posting the new Dino Valley quests. There’s a lot of them, so please be patient with me! Also, comments have been restored!

Also in the meantime, I will be holding a banner contest for the blog!

I will keep entries open until the end of the month and will announce the winner shortly into the new year. :)

If you would like to enter, please read the rules below:

  • Both traditional and digital entries will be accepted.
  • If traditional, please scan your drawing into a digital format.
    • Please keep dimensions to that of the current banner, that is, twice as long as it is tall.
  • If digital, .PNG format is preferred but .JPG will also be accepted. Please no .GIF files as animations are not supported for banner images.
    • Dimensions for digital is 900x200px
  • Design content is limited to landscape images from the game or any abstract designs. Please do not use the game logo. Designs featuring characters or horses will not be accepted.
  • Design MUST include the full blog name (please no abbreviation), tagline is optional
    • Blog name: Star Stable Online Ride Through
    • Tagline: For when you’re stuck on that tricky quest!
  • DO NOT sign or watermark your image. You will be given proper credit elsewhere on the blog!
  • Colors must be subtle and visually appealing, please no bright, obnoxious color schemes.
  • Please email entries to ssoridethrough@yahoo.com
    • Entries posted on the blog will not be accepted.
    • When emailing me, please include your character name or name you would like to be publicly credited with.
  • Entries will be accepted through December 31. Entries submitted after that date will not be accepted.
  • There is no limit to number of entries one person may submit. Have multiple ideas? Send them all!
  • Have fun! There is no theme or anything besides the above mentioned requirements, so feel free to design around your favorite location or aspect of the game!

I look forward to seeing all the wonderful designs you come up with!

The winning design will be used on the blog as the main layout header. All other entries will also be posted for everyone to see. :)

Hope you all have a great week and happy riding!

The Snow Just Won’t Melt

elizabeth_sunbeam

Now it really has been a while… Does the snow up on the mountain pass never melt? There’s been a few unseasonably warm days lately so maybe it’s time to get up there and have a proper check. I know you’re probably fed up watching snow melt, but I’m really, really keen to get into the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur now!

It’s been a hundred years since people were last there, and a little bit of snow shouldn’t be allowed to stop us!

Objectives: Ride to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur and see if the mountain pass is still blocked with ice and snow.

Rewards: 19 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Ride up the mountain pass near Elizabeth’s house to the top to see if the snow has finally melted. Return to Elizabeth when you have inspected the mountain pass.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Really?! What wonderful news! I had a feeling it’d be fine.. The days have been so sunny and warm lately, I just knew it would have an effect on the mountainside.

Quest completed

______________

Come On Now! Away You Go!

elizabeth_sunbeam

How exciting! Now the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur is open and waiting for us to explore! I really want to get my hands on some of the stuff that’s been locked up in that valley for years. It’s such a shame that the mountain pass has been so heavily blocked, otherwise we could have gone there ages ago…

Ah well! Now what are we waiting for?! Ride out and look for a safe way to get through to the valley, then report back to me.

Come on now! Away you go, my friend!

Here’s a little tip: the valley is very isolated, and it might be tough to get out once you get in. Make sure you have some extra space in your rucksack because there’s not going to be any shops or stables in there.

Objectives: Ride on in to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur!

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 85 XP

Ride up the mountain pass and enter the valley through the gap in the snow.

self

A frozen valley thick with freeing mist spreads out beneath the old elevator tower.

Welcome to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur!

Quest completed

______________

The Only Way is Down…

self

No elevator. But it really looks as though it’s possible to get down along the mountainside here…

The ice platforms along the mountainside don’t look as though they’d hold up very long if you step on them. I need to get down without stopping.

Then I won’t be able to come back up the same way. This feels so risky, but you gotta do what you gotta do in the name of adventure! I hope I can find another way up later until then, I’m alone and have nobody to help me…

Objectives: Try to get down the mountainside again without slipping, falling, or letting the ice platforms collapse beneath you!

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

This quest runs as a race to the bottom of the cliff. The platforms will collapse if you do not maintain at least the first gallop to get across them. You do not need to jump across to the platforms, as long as you are moving fast enough. Follow the arrows to find your way down the cliff. I found it fairly straightforward, and you will have ample enough time to complete even if you do fall a few times.

self

This is the lower part of the elevator tower. The elevator seems as unusable from down here as it is from up there.

Quest completed

______________

Inspect the Elevator Motor

self

The motor is right here in the middle of the elevator structure’s lower section. I can check it out and see if it’s possible to fix it. If I can fix the elevator, then I’ve got a sure way back to Valedale and Elizabeth can come with me into the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur without risking death on that dangerous mountainside.

Objectives: Examine the elevator’s motor.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Ride up the ramp to inspect the elevator motor.

self

The motor truly has seen better days. It’s broken, rusty, and out of fuel. Even if it was in better condition, it seems as though it needs to be started using some device or other which must be somewhere nearby.

Quest completed

______________

Check the Control Room

self

That building over there must be some kind of control room. I need to check it out!

Objectives: Examine the little building by the elevator.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Ride over to the little building and see if you can get inside.

self

This door is padlocked and I can’t get in.

Quest completed

______________

Find the Key

self

I wonder if there is a key hidden around here somewhere? Around the door frame or under a window, maybe? Maybe the old classic upturned flowerpot?

It’s worth a look… I really want to get into this little building…

Objectives: Look for any keys that might be lying around nearby.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Search the indicated areas nearby until you find the key, then return to the door and use the key from your inventory.

self

Yes! They key fits the lock! The door’s open now!

Quest completed

______________

Elevator Control Room…

self

This is a control room for the elevator! That control panel looks so old! Looks to be built using the most groundbreaking engineering from the late 19th century.

Definitely needs a closer look to see how messed up the control panel is.

Objectives: Examine the control panel.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Well, let’s see…

self

The control panel looks pretty intact, even though it’s not been used for a hundred years! The building seems to have protected all the delicate machinery from the wind and weather.

Quest completed

______________

Hidden Beneath the Snow…

self

If I can find things around here that could be used a spare parts, I think I can actually fix this motor. If I can find usable fuel, then I can get the elevator started. I really feel like I need to find a safe way to travel between Valedale and this amazingly exciting Valley! Only then can Elizabeth come here with me.

While I was looking for the key, I noticed a few odds and ends poking up through the snow… There could be things lying all over the place that I could use as spare parts.

I can’t be sure, but I also think I might have seen a diesel canister here somewhere in the snow…

Objectives: Find spare parts for the motor.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Ride around the surrounding area and dig up what you can find that you think will aid in fixing the elevator motor.

self

Seems to be a lot of rag-tag bunch of spare parts. Mostly junk… I guess some of it could be used for a basic repair, though.

Quest completed

______________

Motoring Through a Repair

self

I’m totally sure the motor can be fixed, even with these random bits of rubbish. I saw a toolbox in the control room someplace. I’ll need that when I’m doing my repairs!

Objectives: Fix the motor with the spare parts.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Go into the control room to pick up the tool box on the floor. Then dismount your horse near the elevator motor to begin fixing it. Continue to use the tool box on the motor until the repair is complete.

self

So! Done! The motor is fixed I think… For now, at least.

Quest completed

______________

Antique Diesel

self

This tank is filled with hundred-year-old diesel. There’s got to be a can or container of some kind around here somewhere under the snow that I can fill with diesel. That way I can fill up the fuel tank and get the motor going.

Objectives: Find a container in the snow. Fill it with diesel and fill up the elevator motor’s fuel tank.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Search the area for a container. When you have found one, return to the diesel tank to fill up the container. Then take the container and pour it into the giant funnel on the side of the elevator platform.

self

The fuel tank is now filled with loads of really old diesel.

Quest completed

______________

Is the Elevator Starting?

self

Now to try starting the elevator using the control panel in the control room…

Objectives: Try starting the elevator using the control panel in the control room.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Go into the control room and try to start the motor. Keep trying to start it until you succeed.

self

Yay! It works! For how long though, that’s the question… Probably not entirely without risk to ride in that rickety old elevator…

Quest completed

______________

First Ride in a Century…

self

I need to give the elevator a test run! Come on, Icerunner, let’s go! We can’t stand around here all day!

Objectives: Give the rickety old elevator a test run…

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Dismount your horse near the elevator, then click on the elevator gate to ride. Both sides can take you either up or down, so you do not have to wait for a specific car to take you. Once at the top (or bottom, whichever direction you are going), you can mount your horse again.

self

This ride in the elevator didn’t exactly feel safe, but we made it in one piece! We were lucky, huh Icerunner? We should stay hopeful that it lasts long enough to give us a few more lifts up and down!

Now, thank goodness, we can move pretty freely between Valedale and the Valley! Woop woop!

Quest completed

______________

The Old Path Reopens!

self

Now everyone can get to the ancient valley, unless they’re afraid of elevators of course…

Time to tell Elizabeth the good news that the elevator is working!

Icerunner, let’s get out of here before your hooves freeze fast to the ground!

Objectives: Report back to Elizabeth.

Rewards: 9 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: 15 with Keepers of Aideen

Return to Valedale and tell Elizabeth of your findings.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Hello Rita! Hello Icerunner! Is the lift back in business? I thought I could hear something going on up by the mountainside!

You really think that old thing is safe to travel in?

Quest completed

______________

Treasures Amongst the Snow and Ice

elizabeth_sunbeam

I have a few things to prepare before I can leave. Probably best that we wait until tomorrow…

Mmm… We can’t wait that long, can we?

There are things in that valley that I really, really want… I’ll get everything together right away and get into the valley using the elevator. While I do that, you can ask Avalon if there’s anything in particular he wants us to bring back from the valley, okay?

Okay! Talk to Avalon here in the village, and we’ll meet beneath the elevator!

Objectives: Ask Avalon if he wants anything from the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur.

Rewards: 22 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 20 with Keepers of Aideen

Ride over to Avalon’s house across the river, and ask him if there is anything special he would like from the valley.

faceless_druid

Hello Rita! So, the frozen old valley is open again? Hmm… Interesting… Very interesting… Elizabeth wonders if I want something brought back?

Very interesting…

Quest completed

______________

Meet Elizabeth in the Winter Mist

faceless_druid

I need icenthistles! They grew in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur long, long ago, and should still be growing there today. It’s a fantastic plant with all kinds of properties that don’t exist in any other plant in the world!

A very interesting plant, if you ask me…

Off you go and meet Elizabeth, and let her know I want icenthistles!

Objectives: Meet Elizabeth in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur and let her know what Avalon wants.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 15 with Keepers of Aideen

Return to the valley and meet Elizabeth at the bottom of the elevator.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Icenthistles? I thought as much. A very interesting plant, you know…

But this place! Wow! It’s so cool, right?

Cold…

Almost a kind of unearthly cold, don’t you think? Do you feel it? I’ve never been this cold in my life. This insane cold actually has an explanation, but meteorological and historical lectures can wait for another time! Now we need to get to work before everyone hears about how the valley is accessible again; they’ll swarm here, trampling all over everything and plundering everything of worth…

Quest completed

______________

Gather Ice Crystals

elizabeth_sunbeam

There should be some kind of blue ice crystals in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. See if you can find some! They’re incredibly rare and possess mystical powers!

They’re called kallstones. I really want to examine them much more closely. Like I said, they’re super rare, so there’s a chance you might need to look for a while.

Objectives: Find three kallstones for Elizabeth.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 10 with Keepers of Aideen

Search the area for kallstones. Return to Elizabeth when you have found enough of them.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Oh thank you, Rita! Beautiful examples you’ve found… Maybe they’re not quite so rare after all? Great!

Do you hear that? It’s humming a little bit… It’s full of huge amounts of energy! So, so exciting!

Quest completed

______________

Gathering Icenthistles

elizabeth_sunbeam

Go around and gather icenthistles for me and Avalon. They’re sure to be growing here and there, but hurry and pick them before other explorers come and swipe them, or stomp all over them! They’re so valuable!

Since both me and Avalon want some, it’s best to gather a proper bunch!

Pick a dozen.

Objectives: Pick a dozen icenthistles for Elizabeth (and Avalon).

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 10 with Keepers of Aideen

Ride around to find the icenthistles. Return to Elizabeth when you have gathered enough of them.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Thanks! Beautiful specimens!

Quest completed

______________

The End of the Road

elizabeth_sunbeam

Ride out and explore where the road in front of us leads to. Come back and let me know how it looks at the end of the road.

Objectives: Find out where the road leads and tell Elizabeth.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 10 with Keepers of Aideen

Continue down the Explorer’s Road and see what lies around the bend. Return to Elizabeth when you have found where the road leads.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Oh? Not that far? Blocked with snow and ice, you say? Hmph.

Quest completed

______________

Overcoming Obstacles

elizabeth_sunbeam

Hmm.. We’re not going to wait around for that ice-blocking ice to melt… Nothing melts here. Let’s help the springtime arrive in a more…

Hmm… In a more explosive way!

Try to find some little pieces of kallstone so that we can use them to explode whatever’s blocking the road. Collect three small kallstones and I’ll meet you down by the end of the road.

Objectives: Find three small kallstones and meet Elizabeth by the ice blockage at the end of the road.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 10 with Keepers of Aideen

Search for enough kallstones, then ride to the end of the road and meet Elizabeth there.

elizabeth_sunbeam

Oh, look! Perfect! Three little kallstones. That should do the trick.

Quest completed

______________

Fire and Ice!

elizabeth_sunbeam

Take that little pile of kallstones and place them on the ground by the ice blockage. Then we’ll back off a little and take shelter behind this log before we set fire to the kallstones.

You can have the honor of doing it if you like.

Here, take this rune staff… When you’re done backing up to take cover, use the staff and concentrate all your magical power to set fire to the little pile of kallstones.

Then, if my calculations are right, it should hopefully be a case of BANG! And the ice is gone!

Objectives: Set the pile of kallstones down by the ice blockage. Then take cover by the log and use the rune staff.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP, Winter Trenchcoat

Reputation: 10 with Keepers of Aideen

Dismount your horse to set down the kallstones, then return to the log to use your rune staff.

kaBOOM!!

elizabeth_sunbeam

Haha! Fantastic to just get things started with a little explosion! Hope the noise didn’t start any avalanches…

Anyway, now the road ahead is wide open for you! Carry on now and find out where it leads! Go freely to explore the whole Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur! I’m going to head back to Valedale and take a look through the treasures you gathered for us.

Good luck now! You’ll surely find a reason to come visit me again sometime soon… Then you can tell me all about your adventures in the valley!

Quest completed

Continue on down the road to see where our next adventure begins.

Nic’s Story

new_and_improved_nic

Brr… My main goal with the balloon expedition was to be able to find a secret p-p-place I’ve been looking for my whole life, and I started to get indications that the place in question was in or around the Valley of the Hidden D-D-Dinosaur…

The b-ba-ba-balloon journey unfortunately ended in chaos though. I flew straight over the north of the mountain with the plan to get into the valley from the southwest, but the winds took me straight off course and this thick, white mist made it impossible to see anything.

In any case, I thought that through the gaps in the clouds, I could see a glimpse of a warm and magical place on the ground. I felt the warmth in my heart and tried to steer the balloon towards it but the combination of my sudden change in steering, and the cold, hard winds meant that I soon lost control and went heading straight back down to earth.

In a p-p-panic, I jettisoned my sandbags and dumped all my equipment over the side of the balloon, but it was no use. The balloon smashed right down into the snow and suddenly everything was white.

Brr…!!

Objectives: Listen to Nic.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 65 with The Stoneground Expedition

Quite the tale!

new_and_improved_nic

When I came around, I realized I was totally alone and abandoned in a totally unknown spot here in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. Lost, I haven’t been able to leave the crash site because it’s simply too dangerous to go out exploring on foot, without any equipment.

You can’t even imagine how t-t-tired, hungry, c-c-co-cold, and exhausted I am.

Quest completed

______________

The Adventurer’s Lost Equipment

new_and_improved_nic

To try and get the balloon to stop losing height and float again, I had to throw a load of heavy equipment overboard. It’s possibly lying around here somewhere, possibly covered in the snow that never stops falling here. C-c-can you and your lovely strong horse please help me to find my lost equipment? If you could have a look around and bring it back to me, that would be amazing. I’m far too exhausted to be able to carry anything, and my limbs are so stiff and frozen that I can barely move…

Objectives: Search around the area for Nic’s equipment.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

Search around the camp area for the lost equipment. When you have found all of it, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

Would you look at that! My wonderful old adventure kit! Back where it belongs! Th-th-thaannkkssss!

Quest completed

______________

Sandbag Stockpile

new_and_improved_nic

I also ditched a whole bunch of sandbags that I had as ba-ba-b-ballast when I was trying to get the balloon to float again. Could you look for them as well after you’ve found my equipment? Thanks, Rita… Brr…

Objectives: Collect sandbags for Nic.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

Search around the camp area to collect the missing sandbags. When you have found all of them, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

Th-th-thaannkksss! Brrrr…

Quest completed

______________

Assemble Nic’s Adventure Tent

new_and_improved_nic

Amongst all my adventure kit you found, there should be a tent that I’ve had with me on loads of different expeditions and adventures! Would you please be able to put it up so that I’ve got a safe place to sleep and take shelter? I’ve been sleeping here amongst these fir branches until now, and believe me… It’s been really very cold.

I’m far too f-f-fr-frozen to be able to put the tent up myself. Could you help me? It’s a p-p-pretty c-c-complic-c-cated tent, b-b-but I think you can ma-ma-m-manage.

Objectives: Construct Nic’s tent.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

Set up the tent in the indicated area behind Nic, then speak to him again when it is complete. Once the tent is set up, you will be able to sleep overnight in the Valley, to access new clock yellow quests.

new_and_improved_nic

There you go, see! The t-te-tent is up! Now I can at least get a decent night’s rest!

Quest completed

______________

A Warming Lantern

new_and_improved_nic

It’s so cold, grey, and dark here. C-c-ca-can you help me build a little lantern out of snow so that I can shield this candle I have from the wind? That way it won’t blow out. Build it just here in front of me so that I can warm up my hands and g-g-get a little l-li-light.

My hands are shaking too much for me to be able to b-bu-build one myself. Brr…

Objectives: Build a little snow lantern so that the candle is protected from being blown out.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Dismount your horse and pick up snow from the pile beside Nic. Continue clicking the pile until you have picked up all of the snow, you will need it. Then place the snow from your inventory in a pile near Nic. Speak to him again when the lantern is built.

new_and_improved_nic

H-h-how l-l-lovely! That’ll certainly keep the candle from blowing out. Now it just needs to be lit.

Quest completed

______________

Light the Snow Lantern!

new_and_improved_nic

Here, t-t-take my lighter and light the candle in the little snow lantern s-s-so I c-ca-can get a little warmth and stop s-s-sh-sh-shaking!

Objective: Light the snow lantern with Nic’s lighter.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Dismount your horse to use the lighter to light the candle. Speak to Nic again when it is lit.

new_and_improved_nic

Thanks Rita! I can already feel the warmth spreading through my body, and it’s getting a little clearer up in the old noggin! The worst of the shakes seem to be over now.

Quest completed

______________

Firewood

new_and_improved_nic

Nah, it’s no good… Brr… I think we need to think bigger than just a little snow lantern. A proper campfire is what we need! Can you run out and gather some firewood from the forest? While you’re doing that, I’ll build a fireplace… Like, a stone circle so that the fire doesn’t blow away in the wind.

Objectives: Gather firewood.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 25 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride around the camp area and collect enough firewood for a proper campfire. Return to Nic when you have finished.

new_and_improved_nic

Great firewood! Frozen, but we’ll probably be able to set fire to it. See what a lovely campfire I’ve prepared for us? Brr…

Quest completed

______________

Light the Campfire

new_and_improved_nic

Brrr… My fingers are still so thoroughly frozen that I can’t even use my lighter. Would you be able to set light to the campfire, please Rita?

Objectives: Light the firewood with Nic’s lighter.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 25 with The Stoneground Expedition

Dismount your horse to use the lighter to light the campfire. Speak to Nic when it is done.

new_and_improved_nic

What a lovely campfire! Now we’re really starting to warm up! Nothing as cosy and delightful as the flickering light of a campfire.

Quest completed

______________

Campfire Cookery

new_and_improved_nic

Here now, there’s something just as important as sleep, and that’s food! I’m super hungry, and wouldn’t mind a little help with building a stand over the campfire so that I can hang up this cauldron and let the fire warm up the food from underneath! Can you have a look around for three long, sturdy sticks, then set them together to form a stand over the campfire?

Then hang up this adventure cauldron, hehe!

Objectives: Find three long sticks and construct a stand over the campfire. Then hang up the cauldron.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 15 with The Stoneground Expedition

Search the area for three long sticks. Return to the campfire and set them up, then set the cauldron up on the sticks. Speak to Nic when you are finished.

new_and_improved_nic

Now I can cook here too! Thanks so much for helping!

Quest completed

______________

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

new_and_improved_nic

After heat, food, and sleep, I suppose it’s next most important to be able to sit and relax properly. Maybe you could help me build a couple of proper benches here by the campfire? Here, look! A few planks here that look ideal for the job! Grab them and set them on top of the bits of wood already surrounding the fire and then we’ll have a really love pair of benches!

I’ve had a plan in my head for ages to get these benches sorted out, but just haven’t got so far with actually building them. Lucky you’re here to help me!

Objectives: Use the planks to build two benches by the campfire.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 15 with The Stoneground Expedition

There are two benches to set up, with three planks each. Set the planks on both benches, then speak to Nic again.

new_and_improved_nic

Benches done! Lovely! Now we can sit soft on the benches and stare thoughtfully into the campfire. Cosy!

Quest completed

______________

File a Report to A.A.E.

new_and_improved_nic

At last I can think clearly again! I need to contact A.A.E. and tell them what’s happened. I work for them after all, and they’ve not heard from me since I vanished with the balloon! They must think I’ve disappeared forever.

I have to write a letter. My fingers are still frozen, so can I ask for your help in writing a situation report for them? Right there on the bench should be a nice, even surface for letter writing.

Objectives: help Nic write a situation report for A.A.E.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Dismount your horse and use the pen from your inventory to write the reports. Speak to Nic again when you are finished.

Writing a Request to the Post Office

new_and_improved_nic

Hmm… I suppose I should submit a request to the Post Office, then maybe they’ll install a mailbox here. Could you help me write that letter as well, Rita?

Objectives: Help Nic write a mailbox request to send to the Post Office.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Shouldn’t your hands be defrosted enough to write your own damn letters??

Dismount your horse to write the letter on the bench, then speak to Nic when it is finished.

Thanks again for your help with the writing!

Delivering Mail to Civilization

new_and_improved_nic

Would you be able to take these letters to somewhere a little more civilized and look for a Post Office?

Oh, you know Derek in Silverglade? He works at the Post Office? Fantastic! Take these two letters to him then. Thanks in advance, Rita!

Objectives: Deliver Nic’s letters to Derek in Silverglade Village.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 45 with The Stoneground Expedition

Off you go now!

You’ll find Derek where he always is, in the PO by the Silverglade town hall.

derek

Hey Rita! Wow, you and Icerunner both look frozen solid! Two letters, eh? One to A.A.E., nice, I’ll get that sent off for you, and the other is for us here at the Post Office? Exciting!

Derek Explains the Mail System

derek

Woah, you’re out adventuring in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur?! That’s so cool!! Nic Stoneground is asking for a mailbox at his camp there?

Hmm, you’ve got to have a high enough reputation for us to be able install a mailbox, but Nic’s a legend so of course we can get something sorted out for him. The chiefs at Post Office HQ now want us to split all the mail into incoming and outgoing when we install new mailboxes. Dunno what that’s all about, it just sounds like a lot of fuss to me. Anyway, this means that you’ll need two mailboxes to put up at the camp. Understood?

Objectives: Listen to Derek as he tells you all about the Post Office’s new routines.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Sounds like they’re just creating more work for themselves, but not my bucket, not my problem.

Cool. Can’t completely get my head around it either.

Here’s a mailbox for incoming post. You need a separate incoming mailbox under the new rules from head office.

Here, take it to Nic.

Objectives: Take the incoming mailbox to Nic.

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

Return to Nic with the new mailbox.

Return to Nic with the new mailbox.

new_and_improved_nic

Aaaand here’s an outgoing mailbox. Perfect!

Setting Up Mailboxes

new_and_improved_nic

Now we need to set up the mailboxes. Don’t put them up too close to the tent, otherwise I’ll wake up every time the mailman comes. Over there by that tree seems like a good spot, don’t you think? Check if it works to put them over there. See? By that tree there, yep…

Objectives: Set up both mailboxes in the spots Nic suggested.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP, Green Winter Bridle

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

Set up the mailboxes across from Nic, then speak to the when you are done.

new_and_improved_nic

Great! Now we’ve got incoming and outgoing mailboxes! Now we’re finally part of the modern communication network! Just think of all the flowing information!

Quest completed

Return to Nic tomorrow.

Hey all!

I’ve been wanting to practice my art more and also make a little money while doing it, so I’ve been thinking of opening commissions. I wanted to see how many people would possibly be interested.

At the moment, it would only be horses. I can do realistic horses as well as fantasy horses (added wings, horns, different colors, etc) and I will also be offering several different levels of commissions (sketches, or fully colored) as well as premades works. Pricing would range between $5-$15USD and I can do domestic as well as international shipping. [Examples are listed at the bottom of this post.]

I have also been toying with the idea of making a ‘members only’ paid subscription addition to the blog but I’m not really sure what to add to it. So my other question, is there anything extra special that you would like to see on the blog and would be willing to pay access for? Subscription would probably be between $10-$20 USD a year. I was thinking of maybe bringing back the trivia club or something like that.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Please and thank you! XD

Here are a couple of my drawing examples!

Update – What’s to Come

Hey all!

I want to assure you that I am still working on adding the Dino Valley quests. This coming week is going to be busy for me, with work and the holiday. I didn’t get much done this past weekend because I was out of town. But have faith, I haven’t given up!

Reminder! The banner contest ends December 31. Be sure to get your entry in!

More information here.

I am also working on adding my subscription content, but I will tell you more about how that will work when the time comes. I am still open for ideas for things to add so feel free to comment or email me!

Things I will have for sure:

  • Stars and secret locations (yay!)
  • Art commissions
  • Contests with real life giveaways
    • For sure, model horses and art
    • Possibly, star coins (I still am trying to figure out a way to do this that won’t get anyone in trouble)

I am deciding on a price but I think $5 a month sounds fair, but again, I am open to suggestions. I have also considered different levels of membership. For example, $5 a month for basic membership, with access to all extra content as well as commissions and most contests. Then there will also be a few other contests (with better prizes) for the higher levels, maybe $10 or $15 a month. I will probably offer the option to increase or decrease membership as you may please, for example upgrading to a higher level for one month and going back to basic the next month. There will for sure be monthly payments (you won’t have to commit to only 6 or 12 months at a time).

As I have always said, I would love to do this for free, and all the content that is already here will remain free. But I do pay for the blog out of my own pocket and I am looking for some ways to help ease the financial burden of it on me.

I want to do this for you all, so as always, your feedback is greatly welcomed! If you have any suggestions for content I can add to the premium version or how subscription pricing will work, feel free to comment! I love the community and I want everyone to be able to have a say.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

______________

I sat up as the doctor ran over to Rambo and Ron, discussing what everyone should do. It was like I wasn’t there, looking in on the world through a one way mirror. I felt a warm palm on my cold hand, shaking it, and turned to see a small girl staring at me, clearly worried and a bit startled.

“We heard shouting and crying and came from the Stables. Are you ok?” She had curly, auburn hair, falling well below her shoulders, and a freckled face, glowing, with bright ocean blue eyes. She smiled, reassuring me, and I nodded, suddenly conscious of how I looked.

“Yeah, sorry, I’m fine. Well not great but, oh don’t worry. I’m Anna,” I managed to stifle a smile, and she turned behind, and said something I didn’t quit catch. Two more girls appeared, both giggling, and smiled at me.

“I’m Alice, and this is Emma and Lily, and over there is Annie,” she pointed at a dog “We’re here for Jorvik Summer Camp! Well, Pony Camp, I wouldn’t call November Summer personally, although the weather is good!” She stretched out her arms to show this and smiled again, squinting at the sun. I looked at Emma. She had straight brown hair that was cut into short layers that looked a bit dangerous, but really cool, and had thick black eyeliner flying off her lash line. She was pretty and distinctive, and had a super cool indie fashion sense, a little like me. She was looking at me too, and that’s when I noticed the nose stud. It was a plain small-cut diamond, and it twinkled in the sunlight, prettily, adding even more indie edge to her style. She pointed at it and said:

“Got it pierced in July and I still can’t change the stud yet! I’m waiting till Christmas Day!!” She shot me a perfect teeth grin, and then nudged Lily. “Why is the doctor running over here?” I spun around quickly, my gaze zapping all over the square.

“Anna, are you better? We don’t have anyone to get Elizabeth, and Brave really is fast and he has also calmed down now, and then you can explain everything…” She plonked down next to me, worried and exhausted, and I nodded, saving her breath. “Thanks.”

“We could come, too!”  Lily said, the last girl in the group. She had lined her waterline this time, and had waist length blonde hair, that was dip-dyed light brown at the bottom. She had it tied in a French braid, that curled around her neck and followed the line of her arm. There was also a blue and red flower braid intertwined in this whole braid. They all wore the general stable work clothes, and me and Alice stood up as she said this. “Our horses are all fast, and we’d like to see the island!”

“It’s not some guided tour, this is serious…” The doctor started, frowning, but I silenced her.

“No, I’d like them to come, it’d be nice since I don’t feel one hundred percent, still a little shaky. We need to go now though!” I nodded as they ran into the stable yard, jumping up onto their horses and grabbing their hats on the way over. I could tell they were experienced riders. I flew onto Brave’s back and led the way, and off we went to Valedale!

Happy New Year!

Hello all!

I wanted to wish you all a happy new year and thank you for reading my blog. We’ve seen a lot happen on Star Stable; met a new Soul Rider, survived a catastrophic meltdown, and discovered a valley that hasn’t seen people in over a hundred years. A lot has happened with this blog as well. Visitor stats have more than doubled and as it now goes into its third year, I want thank my familiar faces and welcome in new friends.

I will be announcing the winner of the banner contest in the next few days.

I also have big plans for a new subscription area and will also be finishing the Dino Valley quests pretty soon. And then of course we will be continuing on with Anna Whalewood’s story ‘Wishpers’ and finishing the next Starshine Legacy!

At the end of every year, my web host publishes a nice little report on the site’s traffic and other stats. I always enjoy sharing it because I find it so neat!

SSORT’s 2014 Year Report

Hope you all have a safe and wonderful new year and happy riding!

I want to share the results from the banner contest. Here are the runners up:

From Scarlett Queenstone

piper_silentwood

From Piper Silentwood

From Emma Opalmountain

From Emma Opalmountain

And the winner, that I have chosen:

From Patricia Roseheart

From Patricia Roseheart

I had a hard time deciding how to do this, because I know Patricia Roseheart personally (aka ‘the bestie’) and I didn’t think it is fair because he is a professional graphic designer. I do want my blog to look the best with a great banner but at the same time, I also I did ask for entries, and I know everyone tried their best.

I have decided that I will give all the runners up a chance to be on the blog and will rotate the banners and give each one a month up on the blog. Then come April, I will put up the winning banner along with a new layout for the blog. We’ll call it a spring spruce-up, and that way everyone will get a chance to have their banner posted!

Hope everyone had a great New Year!

Have a great week and happy riding!

Hey Guys! Not much of an intro today, but I’m framing a new story, so leave what you would like to read and I’ll try and incorporate it into my new story! Have fun, play Star Stable and enjoy Chapter 10! :)

______________

“Faster, Brave!” I scream as Elizabeth clings to the saddle. We rush over the mountain range and down past Andy’s, leaving his chickens running in circles. I feel Brave’s strong body moving beneath me and finally regain control over myself. We continue down over the bridge near Applegrove and gallop down the beach, steering clear of Doyle’s as to Elizabeth’s instructions. As we ride into Fort Pinta, I see everyone crowding around a house, with men carrying a body through the door. The doctor looks shocked as I slow Brave to a halt and hop down to help Elizabeth dismount. She runs over and they engage in quiet murmurs, as I turn to the door. I suddenly realise who the body is they’re carrying. Mary. I push through the small crowd and rush through the door, freezing when I see her. She’s lying on the wooden table, in the middle of the kitchen, her face finally calm and ridded of the horrified expression in the chapel. Her arms appear bruised and lay by her sides, and her clothes look like they have been nipped by a thorn bush or something. I rush to her side and sit on a chair, placing my hands of her right.

“I’m so sorry.” I whisper as she moans slightly. I rush to the sink to grab her a glass of water and sit back down immediately when I see one of her eyes slightly open.

“Anna….” I shush her abruptly and she nods slightly, closing her eyes again. Soon, her breathing is steady and I back slowly out of the room, leaving the house to talk to Elizabeth. As soon as I’m outside, havoc greets me. I see people rushing to the bridge and Elizabeth seemingly limps over. She looks bruised and tired, but has a slight glow about her. The doctor seats her where I was earlier and kneels beside her, talking again. I speed up my pace towards them and then sit, looking inquisitively at them.

“I need to know what’s going on!” I demand quietly, slightly scared of the outcome.

“No you don…”

“Leave her be, Alice, she’s mature enough to know,” Elizabeth pleads, looking at the Doctor, “I’ll explain, now go and tend to Mary.” The doctor rushes off again, clearly worried about the stability of all of us now.

“Anna, what I’m about to explain is extremely serious. You must understand that for the safety of your friends and family, you must talk to no normal civilians about what happened to you today. Your granddad is aware but you must not discuss it. You never know who may be listening…” She sighs and breaks off, staring at the sea.

“But what…”

“I’m getting there,” she snaps back to reality, cold clouding her eyes. “What you heard in the chapel, what Mary was plagued by, it was the Wishspers. The wishes of those whose lives were taken. They have always been around, they’re everywhere, but are secure in a second world, the afterlife, where they are alive but the spirits pursue what they wanted before they left our world. They aren’t really harmful, but the crack is. The worlds are split for a reason, and it shouldn’t be that easy to just unlock and return, it’s dangerous for either side, and must be stopped.” She gasps for breath, shaking slightly. “I need your help. You can help unlock this, help me, help Jorvik. They must be stopped, before more harm comes of this.” I nod and she smiles slightly, reassuring me.

“Everything’s going to be alright.”

Baby Seals! – Location Information

$

0

Hey all!

Hope you are having a great week!

I know this week’s update news was a little misleading, so let me give you the scoop: The seal update is NOT a quest! It is only a store, located on an iceberg. There is no reputation needed to be able to access the store. You do have to have access to Harvest Counties. The iceberg is located on the coast of Forgotten Fields, near the Sleeping Widow Tree (or along the north-west coast, if you have not done that part of the story yet). The iceberg is huge, you can’t miss it! Run onto the iceberg and follow the large snow spires, out toward the sea and Cape West Fishing Village. The shopkeeper is there with the seals all lined up on a log.

The seals themselves, all cost Star Coins, and there is about 8 or 9 different ones to choose from. They are moderately priced, all about 50 Star Coins each. There are also a few exclusive saddle bags that can be purchased with either Shillings or Star Coins.

I think the seals are super cute and definitely worth the money. XD

Have a great day and happy riding!

new_and_improved_nic

Now there should’ve been some mail! Can you ride over to the mailbox for incoming mail and check if anything’s been delivered? Almost regretting putting the mailboxes so far away…

Objectives: Check Nic’s inbox to see if any mail has arrived.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride over to the mailbox and retrieve the mail and bring it to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

See! Brilliant! A letter! Ooh, from A.A.E. as well! They say they support me fully in my explorations out here in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur, and that I should expect a supply of new resources soon! This is excellent news!

They also write that they’re happy to hear I’m actually alive, and that they thought I’d disappeared forever. We’ve got you to thank for that, Rita!

Exploration Inauguration

new_and_improved_nic

So there we go, Rita! The camp seems to be in some kind of order, even if it clearly needs a few improvements to bring up the comfort levels a little… But most importantly, we’ve made a start and we’ve got the support of A.A.E. Now our exploration expedition can begin for real!

Do you want to help me explore the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur?

Objectives: Accept that you want to help Nic with his discovery of the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur.

Rewards: 35 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP, Pink Science Jacket

Reputation: 35 with The Stoneground Expedition

We’ll go down in history!

new_and_improved_nic

Fantastic! This is great! Then we’re a team! As a thank you, every day this week I’m going to share all of my information! Everything I know about this place!

Quest completed

______________

Exploring the Nic Stoneground Way

new_and_improved_nic

We can all explore and find things in many different ways. Some ways are better than others and some are, well, garbage. You should remain aware that different approaches are necessary for different purposes, and you should always ask yourself: “What is the purpose of my expedition?” The answer will always let you know the approaches you should take, which Will then make it clear to you what equipment you should have.

I want to finish off my map of this area. You’ll need my half-finished map, a pen, and a pair of binoculars to check angles and figure out different positions and such. At the same time, I also want you to capture images of some places and that’s of course easiest if you use a camera. With a half-finished map, pen, tripod binoculars, and camera, you should be fully equipped for the task.

I will send you out to the places where I feel it’s important to fully document the geography and thus complete the map. Don’t leave anything behind at the places you document. An explorer must never lose sight of their equipment, because that’s how expeditions fail!

Understood?

Objectives: Listen to Nic’s instruction on how to carry out some successful exploration.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Time to become an explorer for real!

new_and_improved_nic

Right, then. A summary: Using triangulation, you’ll work out the distances between different distances and so be able to complete the map, and take pictures using the camera I’ll give you. Completely clear, right?

Quest completed

______________

Test Your Kit!

new_and_improved_nic

Oh, you want to test the equipment first? Clever! A real adventurer always tests their kits. How about this then? Take the kit out and try documenting that spot over there by the edge of the camp. Have a go, and come back to me when you’re done. Then we can go over the procedure one last time before you head off on your expedition!

Objectives: Give the adventure kit a test run. Use the equipment in the spots indicated just outside the camp.

Rewards: 90 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Go over near the large tree south of Nic’s camp.

To completely explore a location, three objectives must be completed.

  • Use the camera three times (on the areas that are higher off the ground)
  • Use the tripod (place the tripod, use the tripod, then pick it up
  • Use the map (place the map on the little snowy table, use the marker on the map, then pick it up)

Make sure you don’t leave any of your equipment behind! Return to Nic when you have explored the area near the camp.

 new_and_improved_nic

That looked promising! I suppose you could’ve held the camera a little higher up and changed the shutter settings to be able to get a better exposure to compensate for the snow reflections. Otherwise, it was okay!

Quest completed

______________

Explore the Frozen Valelake

new_and_improved_nic

Right-o! Here, take the equipment and you can be off on your first real expedition! I think you could probably get started by exploring and documenting the Frozen Valelake down there. The lake makes up a central part of the crater. The water level is now much lower than it was at the time when the lake filled the whole crater…

As always with ice: Be careful! It can break, and there are cracks to look out for! You need to be very, very careful if you don’t want to fall through into the icy water.

Come back to me for a debrief when you’ve documented the four places on the Frozen Valelake!

Objectives: Document and explore the places marked on the map.

Rewards: 65 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Use the same procedure to explore the four areas marked on your map. Don’t forget your equipment out on the lake!

Return to Nic when all of the areas have been explored.

new_and_improved_nic

WOW! You’ve found The Hidden Dinosaur!! I’ve only ever heard mention of it in the old travelogues of the early adventurers, and I’ve always wanted to see it for myself!

I feel strangely elated over this awesome skeleton, some kind of connection from the past that I can’t quite put my finger on… A little like I’ve got a really strong déjá vu.

You’ve taken some really outstanding pictures! I’ll work through some of this new information and I might come up with some additional information related to this later. May even need to send a report to A.A.E. about this and see if they have any more information for me…

We need to know more!

Quest completed

______________

Skeleton Samples for A.A.E.

new_and_improved_nic

We need to analyze the bones! Take skeletal samples from various locations on the skeleton with this test doodad. The paleontological department at A.A.E. will then analyze the samples.

What I said?

Polenta? No, no, haha! Polenta is a tasty corn porridge. Ha ha!

P-A-L-E-O-N-T-O-L-O-G-Y! Paleontology is the study of prehistoric life and organisms. Cool, huh?

So really, we’re all paleontologists here in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. We’re real scientists!

Umm… Sorry. Sciencewoman and… Uh… Sciencehorse. Hmm… Oh, you say scientists whether it be men, boys, women, girls, or horses. Don’t ask me why.

Objectives: Use the test equipment to take paleontological tests of the huge dinosaur skeleton.

Rewards: 75 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride out to the dinosaur and take samples from several places on the skeleton, then return to Nic when you are finished.

new_and_improved_nic

Thanks! The paleontologists at A.A.E. are dying to see these test results!

Quest completed

______________

Drilling for Ice Cores

new_and_improved_nic

The ice is old. For a scientist, it can tell us a lot about the past. If you study the different layers of ice, you can learn about what the climate was like before. This lower lake ice has been properly protected from outside influences until the big collapse in 1912…

A.A.E. has expressed a lot of interest in this, and want us to drill out ice cores to send to them for analysis!

While you’re out on thin ice, can you take some ice samples? Take this ice drill and drill for ice cores that we can send to A.A.E.

Objectives: Use the ice drill to drill out cores of ice to be sent away for scientific analysis.

Rewards: 65 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride out on the ice and dismount your horse to use the auger. Collect three core samples, then return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

Great ice cores! Now we just need to send them with super fast mail so that they don’t melt on the way… I’ll pack them in fabric, styrofoam, foil so they should survive the journey…

Quest completed

______________

Mail in the Dale

new_and_improved_nic

Ooh, Rita, didn’t that sound like something fluttering into the mailbox over there?

Mmm! I promise! I heard it very clearly. Could you just run over and grab the letter and I’ll get my glasses out while you collect it?

Objectives: Check if there’s any mail for Nic Stoneground.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: 5 with The Stoneground Expedition

Mail gopher again…

new_and_improved_nic

There was a letter? Knew it!

Let’s have a look… I couldn’t find my glasses but this letter is written so properly that it should be fine to read anyway.

Quest completed

______________

Send the Samples

new_and_improved_nic

There we go, those samples are all packed into boxes and ready to be sent. Can you take them over to the outgoing mailbox and try squeezing them in there? It’s really important that they get to A.A.E. so that they can see my work here is in full swing!

Objectives: Mail both boxes containing the test samples. Place them in the outgoing mailbox.

Rewards: 75 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Put the two boxes into the big red mailbox, then speak to Nic again.

new_and_improved_nic

Thanks for all your help, Rita! It’ll be really exciting to hear what A.A.E. has to say about these!

Quest completed

An A.A.E. Colleague Comes Crashing In…

new_and_improved_nic

Hmm… I don’t know whether this is good news or not, Rita. Professor Einstein from Jorvik City University is apparently on her way here. Have you heard of her?

No, no, not that Professor Einstein. I’m talking about Professor Elsa Einstein: The world’s leading researcher in the field of quantum semantics. You’ve never heard of her? Lucky you, I was about to say.

You see, Elsa Einstein is known for her meticulous accuracy and precise planning in everything she takes on, contrary to how I usually structure my research, you might say.

What she’ll do here? There’s nothing here that’s got anything to do with her research, so I’ve no idea. All I know is that if she and I work together, it’ll go belly up within hours.

She’s apparently on her way here by helicopter; she must be mad! The winds over the valley took my balloon down straight away, so I’d hate to think what the bad weather would do to a helicopter!

Let’s see… Says here she should have gotten here yesterday, apparently. The mail isn’t so fast here, Rita, haha!

Wait! Are you thinking what I’m thinking, Rita?

Exactly! The weird noise we heard earlier must’ve been Professor Einstein’s helicopter crashing! We have to save her, Rita!

The sound came from the other side of the lake, I’m sure of it. Ride there and look and I’ll see if I can find my first aid kit or something else useful in the refrigerator. Hurry Rita, hurry!

Objectives: Find Professor Einstein’s crashed helicopter.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 10 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride out onto the lake to see if you can find Elsa and her crashed helicopter.

professor_einstein

Hmm. Who are you?

Well hello to you, Rita, I’m Professor Elsa Einstein. Are you by any chance a qualified helicopter mechanic?

No? How about Chinese? Do you speak Chinese?

No?

Blast. My knowledge of helicopters is basic at best and the manual I found is in Chinese, which is one of the few languages I’ve yet to master.

You have to understand that I simply don’t have time to spend 3.7 days – through reasoning and logical thinking – to learn either how helicopters work, or indeed the Chinese language from the manual. By that time, I’ll have frozen to death in this miserable place.

Quest completed

______________

Helicopter Replacement: 1 Horsepower…

professor_einstein

Well, now you’ve turned up, a solution to my problem appeared. Such good fortune. Two people should, without risking your horse’s health, be able to sit on horseback with each other and ride along with the same efficiency to the nearest place with some kind of civilized temperature.

Now Rita, how does one get up in the saddle? In theory, it’s very simple but I notice that in practice, it’s more difficult to perform my movements in the order and accuracy as the theory requires. You’ll help me?

Thank you. That was kind of you. Now you get to steer this vehicle to civilization before my body temperature reaches a critically low level.

Objectives: Ride to Nic Stoneground’s camp with Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 5 with The Stoneground Expedition

Steer your four legged ‘vehicle’ back to Nic’s camp.

professor_einstein

Mhm. What on earth is this place?

Oh, would you look at that. Nic Stoneground.

Quest completed

Bad News Never Had Good Timing

professor_einstein

Nic Stoneground, I see you’ve used, as ever, your unstoppable talent for ineptitude to build some kind of camp. How will you ever be able to conduct serious research in this kind of uncivilized setting?

We can discus this issue later, I see that you have a fire that burns and it must be only a matter of minutes before my extremities have frozen to the point that you could snap off a finger.

Nic, before I warm myself by the fire I must remember to convey the greetings of the board of the university. They want to express their congratulations to you on your discovery of this valley, and they look forward to the first results of your expedition here with great excitement. They also say that they will unfortunately not be able to fund your research any further before they get to see some real results.

And with that said, Rita, I can now declare that never have I been so happy to be close to such a primitive fire.

Aaaah, precious warmth!

Objectives: Talk to Nic Stoneground.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Tell Nic the news, the bad news, I guess…

Research in Exile

new_and_improved_nic

Oh, Rita… If I’m ever going to be able to make any proper discoveries, I can’t have Professor Einstein poking around all the time. What’s she doing here anyway? She hasn’t said anything?

What? If she’s related to Albert?

Well, yes she is, but she’s from the smart side of the family.

Hmm… If she thinks this camp is so awful then she’s welcome to improve whatever she wants, just as long as she doesn’t bother me and my epic plans. Tell her that from me, Rita.

Objectives: Talk to Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Oh gee, guys, way to act like respectable adults…

professor_einstein

Hello to you again, young Rita. What am I up to?

Well, I… Umm, you know…

Right, listen. My recent experiments with the practical application of quantum dynamics weren’t so popular with the management at the university. They were a bit miffed that I’d built a very small nuclear reactor in order to generate enough power to run my devices. I assured them that it was harmless but apparently it didn’t matter; they were completely irrational and refused to listen to my entirely logical explanations.

To cut a long story short, we agreed that I would pursue my research elsewhere until this whole affair has settled down because apparently the authorities weren’t very happy that someone had built a hydrogen bomb in the middle of Jorvik City.

Why did I build a hydrogen bomb?

It was just a completely ordinary and entirely banal experiment; I’d never intended to detonate the bomb for real, and certainly not right then in any case. Well, well, not everybody can be rational. The university management found for some reason that this distant, isolated location they’d just heard about sounded perfect for me to conduct my research in. So here I am. Unfortunately, all my equipment was lost in the helicopter crash.

So, I don’t really know what to do now.

Speak with Professor Einstein about her plans to start building Nic Stoneground’s camp into a proper research facility.

One-Way Trip to the Stone Age

professor_einstein

Rita, can you answer me something?

How on earth is someone supposed to conduct serious research here? It’s like I’ve taken a one-way trip to the Stone Age!

What’s that? Nic wondered if I wanted to take responsibility for the state of the camp? Hmm… Probably the first intelligent thought to come out of that man his whole life.

I’ll see to it that this becomes a first-class research facility of the very highest international standard.

First, I need to set out a plan.

Rita! A pen and paper at once so that the planning can begin!

Objectives: Get a pen and paper for Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Fetch the pen and paper that is set out on the benches near Nic. Bring both items to Elsa.

professor_einstein

Ah, a pen and paper. Thank you Rita.

Now let the planning begin!

At Least Zero Degrees Kelvin

professor_einstein

Hmm…

Brr…!

What’s going on?!

Brr…! It’s so cold that my brain has almost frozen solid. The temperature must be at least zero degrees Kelvin… Brr…!

Look Rita! The fire’s gone out!

Brrrrr…!!

Rita!! Don’t just stand there! Do something! Get something appropriately flammable immediately, before we freeze to death! Sticks, branches, twigs… Anything! Brrr…!

Objectives: Find dry firewood that can be thrown on the fire.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: (5 point toward building the camp)

Search around the area of the camp and pick up any firewood you see. Return to Elsa when you have found enough firewood.

The f-f-f-fire has g-g-gone out. S-s-s-so c-c-cold!

P-p-p-put the t-t-twigs on the f-f-fire. Qu-qu-quick, Rita!

Brrr… Hurry!

T-t-t-take this lighter and light the f-f-f-fire…

Objectives: Set the twigs down on the fire and light it using the lighter you were given by Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Place the twigs from your inventory, then dismount your horse to use the lighter. Speak to Elsa again when you have lit the fire.

professor_einstein

Oooh, heat at last! How lovely! Aaaaahhh….

That was probably the most horrific situation I’ve ever found myself in, Rita, this is truly a deadly cold, getting right into your joints and deep down in your bones. How do we attract the world’s leading researchers in this climate?

Quiet. Shh… Let me think, Rita…

Hmm…

Aha! I’ve got it!

Quest completed

______________

Take Your Customs With You

professor_einstein

My logical thinking is really in top form today, Rita. Hush now and listen to my plan!

The first step that must be implemented is of course to mark the way here so that the potential candidates for our research center can at least find their way here.

Since the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur is at a technological level comparable to the Stone Age, it is particularly appropriate that we adjust our methods accordingly.

Do you understand, Rita? No?!

Well then. Let me give you a suitably Stone Age explanation…

Ugg. Bring torches. Go towards elevator. Ugg ugg. Stick torches in torch holders. Ugg. Light torches with lighter. Ugg ugg ugg.

Mmm, that was a bit rude, wasn’t it, Rita? It’s this cold that gets me all cranky. Sorry.

But come now, off you go.

Objectives: Set up and illuminate torches along the road between the lift to Valedale and Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 40 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Ride along the Explorer’s Road, between Nic’s camp and the elevator. Place the torches from your inventory and use the lighter to start them alight. Return to Elsa when all of the torches have been lit.

professor_einstein

Great! A well-lit path here is the most basic underlying part of my plan. Now let’s continue.

Quest completed

______________

The Next Step is Clearly Totally Logical

professor_einstein

Let me clarify our position, Rita, so that you understand our precarious situation.

We’re a long way from A.A.E.’s headquarters and can’t just expect any financial assistance from them in the near future. Just to fill in the most basic forms would take me at least three months. Before the application has been processed and the money has been paid, we are talking about a minimum of two and a half years at least.

We don’t have time to wait for that, as I’m sure you can understand.

What should we do?

Well, Rita? That’s obvious! We will…

We will…

Umm…

Aha! Now I have it!

The rational and logical thing to do is to lease land in the camp to souvenir salesmen and to attract tourists who want to share our discoveries and so on and so forth. A simple enough idea, don’t you think, Rita?

So, you know what the next step is, right? No?!

Think logically now. It’s pretty obvious… Okay, I’ll explain. We’re just waiting for the letter to arrive.

What letter, you ask?!

The letter from all the souvenir salesmen who want to peddle their tat here of course! Come, away with you now! See if there are any letters in the mailbox.

Objectives: Check the mailbox to see if any mail has arrived to Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

You should be getting pretty good at checking the mailboxes by now…

professor_einstein

Nothing in the mailbox?

Most illogical. According to my calculations, the likelihood of something having arrived was almost 100%.

Well, well, that’s the probability theory for you; one can never be sure. That’s the whole point.

Hmm. You’ve got lots of work to be getting on with here in any case. It’s just a case of getting on with the renovation work until the letter arrives.

Unfortunately, I’ve got no time to be helping with that sort of thing, I need to go over my calculations so that I can give a more exact prediction of when the mail’s going to come.

Most peculiar…

Two Hundred Lottery Jackpots. In a Row.

professor_einstein

Sigh.

I simply do not understand, Rita. I’ve double-checked – no, triple checked – my calculations and I can’t find a single fault. The probability that the item got here is 99.99999999999999999993%. Do you see?

That means that there’s a greater chance that the mail arrived than there would be a magical valley full of unicorns right around the corner! Unbelievable… Can it really be that the whole theory of probability is incorrect? That quantum mechanics is just a load of random nonsense? It certainly seems so, however difficult it may to believe it. The evidence is of course completely overwhelming!

What? You think there’s mail now? HA!

Now, now, little Rita… Chances are 0.000000000000000000007% that some mail arrived; you’d have more chance of winning two hundred lottery jackpots in a row than to find a letter in that mailbox! Well, well. Give it a go, maybe you’ll strike it lucky? Hahaha!

While you do that, I’ll pack my bags. It’s time to go home.

Objectives: Check to see if any mail has arrived at Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 150 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP, Yellow Winter Beanie Hat

Reputation: (25 points toward building the camp)

Check the mail and prove Mrs Smartypants wrong…

professor_einstein

WHAT?!!

A letter!!

I don’t believe it! How could this have happened?

This is absolutely the most important thing to have happened since the invention of the wheel! Every single scientific theory needs to be re-examined and re-evaluated.

Hmm? A single explanation, you say?

Haha, well let me tell you Rita, that in my calculations I’ve taken into account everything from black holes to continental drift, so I rather think there’s absolutely not a simple explanation as you suggest.

What do you mean the mailman maybe doesn’t come every day?

Wait… What do you mean?

Hang on! I’ve got it! Aha!

Exactly! If I factor in the fact that the mailman only ventures into this cold once or twice a week then my calculations are totally exact!

Haha!

Right. Enough fun now, there’s work to do!

Tat Minus 37 Seconds

professor_einstein

Let’s have a look at what it says here…

Aha! Exactly as my calculations predicted.

This is a letter from an entrepreneur who wants to come to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur to peddle his tat. His name is Folke and he says he’s coming by boat to Valedale and will be arriving soon.

Hmm… Now this is just a quick calculation off the top of my head Rita, so you mustn’t be angry if it’s a little off, but I think he’s going to arrive in… 37 seconds.

What are you still doing here, Rita? Ride out and meet him! Hurry! I need to calculate the best place for a ‘souvenir’ shop here at the camp, so I don’t want to be disturbed.

Objectives: Ride out to meet Folke by the pier in Valedale.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Meet Folke on the small dock next to the bridge in Valedale.

folke

Good day to you!

Are you Nic Stoneground?

No? Your name is Rita?

Right. It says quite clearly here in my letter that a Mr Stoneground would meet me here at the pier today; are you sure you’re not him?

Yes, yes, okay, I suppose it doesn’t matter! I am in any case here to open a premier gift shop in the newly discovered Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. It sounded so incredibly exciting, not to mention lucrative, that I just had to come here and introduce my fabulous conversation pieces to a new audience!

I’m so excited! I think I’d better dance now!

Objectives: Find Folke’s goods shipment which floated away down the Silversong River.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Ride along the river bank and pick up the crates that floated away, then return to Folke.

folke

Folke’s Hidden Dino Journey

folke

Okay, okay, now I’ll be more careful, I promise. How are we going to get to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur, by the way?

I’m going to be on horseback?! Oh my, is that even possibly? He looks a bit dangerous…

What’s that? Icerunner is the nicest horse in the world, you say? Okay then, I suppose I’ll just climb up…

Oof…

Ugh!

There! Just don’t ride too fast, what if I feel off and hit my head or something?!

Objectives: Ride to Nic Stoneground’s camp with Folke and his consignment.

Rewards: 35 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Take the usual route to the camp. You can take the elevator if you so choose too. Deliver Folke to the area near Professor Einstein, and he will automatically disembark.

folke

Oh my, oh my! What a ride! Well, I suppose at least I’m alive!

Quest completed

______________

Best Spot in Camp!

folke

Hmm… I was led to believe that this place would be swarming with tourists. Where exactly are they? I can’t see them.

Umm…

I’m not entirely sure this is such a great idea after all…

You think I should talk to Professor Einstein first? Okay, I suppose someone with a name like that could probably explain everything.

Objectives: Talk to Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

I’m sure she’s had it all perfectly planned out according to proper data analysis….

professor_einstein

Welcome to you, Folke. We’ve been expecting you, and you’ll be simply thrilled to learn that I’ve prepared everything down to the very finest detail. My calculations show that your tat shop – I mean, luxury souvenir and conversation piece emporium – will make a profit of 83% in its first year. My calculations also show that the absolute best place for your shop is over there. Right where I’m pointing.

Oh my, no! How ludicrous, I won’t be taking questions. Please. Just stand yourself where I’m pointing.

A little more to the left…

Take a step back…

Exactly there.

Quest completed

______________

A Great Spot for Folke’s Shop

professor_einstein

So Rita, you can very well take care of the details and make sure Folke gets started with his store. Since I made the mistake of not counting the irregular mail delivery, we’re lagging behind in our plans. So let me get to work. Give Folke a big welcome and tell him that I expect him to pay his first rent in 4.7 days.

Objectives: Talk to Folke.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Speak to Folke by his new shop location.

folke

Hmm…

Yes, that Professor Einstein certainly seems to know what she’s talking about, Rita. This place really feels perfect. I’ll probably stay here for at least a little while and see how it goes.

Quest completed

______________

Don’t Quit ‘Til the Shop’s Fit!

folke

Could you help me carry my cratefuls of goods here? They’re such heavy boxes that I’m not sure I could do it alone.

Objectives: Help Folke carry his crates to the location for the shop.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Pick up each box, one by one, and place them near Folke. Speak to him again when you have moved all of the boxes.

NOTE!

For some reason, the sound effect of the boxes dropping, is stupid loud, so if you have the game through headphones, I would advice turning down your volume for this quest.

folke

Thanks! Now it’s time to get started with a little shop-fitting. It’ll be done in o time, just you wait and see!

Quest completed

______________

I Saw the Sign and It Opened Up the Shop…

folke

This is going to be perfect, Rita. My luxury souvenir conversation pieces will sell like hotcakes! Professor Einstein herself said it’s a guaranteed success and if you can’t trust a person of that name, who can you trust?

Anyway, thanks for all your help Rita. You know what? You can have the honor of taking down the sign that lets everyone know the shop is closed… That’s all there is left to do before I can open my shop.

Objectives: Take down the sign saying the shop is closed.

Rewards: 75 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Reputation: (25 points toward building the camp)

Take down the closed sign and let’s get this thing going!

professor_einstein

There we go! Now I’ll just stand here in my shop and wait for the customers to flock to my luxury conversation pieces. Come by and say hello sometime soon, won’t you? Wish me luck! Have a lovely day, Rita!

Quest completed

______________

Water, Water Everywhere… Or…

professor_einstein

So, now we’ve got Folke on-site selling his souvenirs and his tat, that’s one less job on the to-do list!

Ah, now we arrive at the next point in our plan: basic facilities. Since the average temperature in this inhospitable and extremely unsuitable place for research is so far below freezing, it doesn’t matter that we’re surrounded by water. You surely know I’m talking about all the snow and ice around here.

We need water in liquid form, and luckily I was far-sighted enough to have brought with me one of my inventions, the Hydro-Detecto 2000! With this incredible piece of genius, even the most uneducated amateur is sure to find a water source within mere minutes. When the water source is suitably spotted, you just have to drill into the ground until the water starts to spray up!

Go ahead, Rita, here’s the Hydro-Detecto 2000 and a climate-relevant drill.

So. Press the big red button to start the Hydro-Detecto 2000.

Right, now it’s on. Good, good.

Now, hold it just in front of you and listen. The closer you are to a water source, the more noise the Hydro-Detecto 2000 makes. When you’re close enough, it will show you exactly where to drill. Simple, huh?

It should not take you more than two, maximum, three minutes to find water, so get moving! We’ve much to do and can’t afford more delays!

Objectives: Listen to the sound coming from the Hydro-Detecto 2000. The closer you are to a water source, the more sound it’ll make. When you’ve found the source, use the drill.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Ride around the area marked on your map. It make take a few passes for you to find the source. The orange sparkles will pop up exactly where the source is. Once you have found it, dismount your horse and use the drill from your inventory.

Return to Professor Einstein when you are done.

professor_einstein

Excellent, Rita! Now we have a water source, we can proceed with the other critical parts of our plan.

What do you mean, no water?

The Hydro-Detecto 2000 didn’t work?! Impossible! You must’ve done something wrong in some way. Wait, so you’re saying that you did exactly as I showed you and drilled in the place it told you to drill?

Most unusual… Perhaps I should take a look at the device and try some troubleshooting.

Quest completed

______________

A Facility Worth Occupying

professor_einstein

Well, this is just typical.

If we don’t find water, we can’t continue with the next step in our plan. As luck would have it, I’ve found a temporary solution: a project we can occupy ourselves with until the Hydro-Detecto 2000 works properly.

We’re going to build a place where riders can take care of their horses: a Horse Care Facility, to be exact. I’ve been told that horses are very popular around this part of Jorvik, so it should work in attracting a few extra tourists.

You’re a rider, so you can help me with this project. I must admit that biology isn’t my strongest suit, so with your help, we’ll be able to build something that’s both practical and effective.

So, if you get started by picking a few things up for me: one hundred steel girders, three tons of concrete, and 6139 nails. Hmm? Where would you get that?

Ohhhh, of course! We’re in the middle of nowhere… The edges of the most obscure and outlying corners of the known universe. Ah well, we’ll just have to use whatever we can find here instead.

Let me think…

Aha! I’ve got it!

Rita, fir branches! A satisfactory substitute for the concrete floor I’d first considered. Get LOADS of fir branches! Go!

Objectives: Gather fir branches for Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Ride around the area and pick up all of the fir branches that you find. Return to Professor Einstein when you have found enough.

professor_einstein

Was that all you could find? Sigh. Ah well, you’ll just have to find more later.

Quest completed

______________

Gather Logs to Build With

professor_einstein

After having rationally and logically gone through all the alternatives, I’ve decided that the best and most suitable replacement for steel girders are logs gathered from the surrounding wilderness. They obviously need to be the right size, so you should only bring back units of the correct dimensions.

So, now that’ I’ve shown you how they should look, you can toodle off and look for logs Off you go, Rita.

Objectives: Gather logs for Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Pick up the logs that are scattered around the camp, then return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

Is that all the logs you could find? Hmm, suppose you’ll just have to get some more later.

Quest completed

______________

Einstein’s Mail Calculations

professor_einstein

Now that I’ve taken into account the oddly sporadic mail delivery times to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur, probability calculations are now giving more realistic results Now the chance that there’ll be more letters from interested parties is 54%, enough that it should be very interesting to investigate the mailbox.

I myself can’t step away from the fire without my body’s freezing process becoming unstoppable. That’s scientific fact. You’re better equipped for this awful climate, so it must then, logically, be you who performs the task. So, away with you now.

Objectives: Check if any mail has arrived to Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings 20 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Seriously, I could almost do this in my sleep by now…

professor_einstein

No mail? Ah well. We’ve got our project to construct a horse care facility to be getting on while we wait.

Rita. Well, thank you Rita. I’ve been wandering around this frozen wilderness for so long that I’d almost given up hope.

Why I came here?

Well, I thought I’d try to do a little research on the very unusual horses I’ve heard live here. I read about them in some kind of antique book and thought finding them again could be the discovery of the year, but now I’m not so sure if I’m able to carry on looking for them. I’ve had quite enough adventure for now… Listen, do you think there might be place for a veterinary practice here?

Objectives: Talk to the vet.

Water, Water, Everywhere. Literally Everywhere.

professor_einstein

I simply do not understand what’s wrong with the Hydro-Detecto 2000, Rita, there’s probably no point in continuing.

What could be wrong? I don’t know.

It’s an incredibly complex device but to give you a nice plain description, we could say that it records all of the water within a fixed radius and indicates where there’s a certain amount of water.

Ice? What’s that got to do with the price of fish? Is to do with anything?

There’s ice everywhere, Rita!

Ice is water, obviously! What are you asking about ice for?!

How could I be so stupid?! This climate is terrible, the cold is going straight to my head!

Haha! Can you imagine… I hadn’t set the Hydro-Detecto 2000 to disregard frozen water.

Hahaha!

So, enough with the jokes. Back to work.

Here, now I’ve recalibrated the Hydro-Detecto 2000, except this time I’ve done it correctly. Now it’ll ignore the frozen water which by any logic should make it a piece of cake to find a proper water source.

So, you know what to do Rita. Find the location of the water source and use the drill.

Objectives: Use the Hydro-Detecto 2000 to find a water source. Drill in the location it tells you to.

Rewards: 100 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP, Orange Winter Vest

Reputation: (100 points toward building the camp)

Search around to find the water source then dismount your horse to use the drill. Return to Professor Einstein when you have found the water.

So, now we just need to harness the water for utilization, Rita.

Every Loser Wins, Every Winner Loses

professor_einstein

Whilst you’ve been gathering building materials for the Equine Protection, Care, and Guardianship Facility, I’ve designed a well that’s adapted to this climate, complete with fan heaters and speakers that play soothing music specially composed for horses, built of materials that don’t require maintenance for hundreds of years.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone that would deliver two tons of plutonium here in under six months. This darned remote ice age valley is causing me all kinds of hassle.

Instead, I ordered this all-in-one well construction kit from JKEA. I’ve studied the instructions for hours and even though it seems to make perfect sense, it’s so horrifyingly complex that even I’m unable to actually work out how to begin. Rarely have I been forced to admit that I’ve been intellectually defeated but in this case, I give up. Every loser wins, and every winner loses. We’ll have to wait six months for the plutonium shipment, Rita.

You want to have a try? No. There’s no point, Rita. You’re putting your mental health at risk if you so much as attempt to read the first few lines.

Hmm? It can’t be that difficult, you say?! Well, I say. Try then, Rita, but I wash my hands of the whole thing. Don’t blame me if your brain explodes.

Objectives: Use the all-in-one well-building kit from JKEA to construct the well at the spot you found water. Put it together using the tool included in the kit.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Dismount your horse and place the crate on the spot where you found water. Then use the hammer to build the well. Return to Professor Einstein when you are finished and we’ll see whose head explodes when you complete this seemingly insurmountable task…

professor_einstein

How on earth is that possible? You managed to assemble the well!!

I’ve clearly underestimated you, Rita. Fancy, there’s finally an intellectual equal here in the valley for me to communicate with. At last, the spiritual drought I have been exposed to reaches its end!

Tell me dear Rita, what are your thoughts on the dynamic quantum field theory?

You don’t know much about it?

What do you think about the latest advances in seismic relativity linguistics?

It doesn’t sound especially interesting to you?

It was probably just luck that was on your side when you managed to build the well, Rita. Well, back to the desert of my soul.

Quest completed

______________

PROJECT EPCGF-01X

professor_einstein

We can get started with the construction of the Equine Protection, Care, and Guardianship Facility now that we’ve gathered the necessary materials. Shouldn’t we find a simpler name for it, by the way, Rita?

We’ll call it simply, Project EPCGF-01X. Simple and logical!

Start by placing the logs on the sites I’ve marked out. It shouldn’t take longer than 58 seconds; get a move on so we can continue with the next step.

Objectives: Lay down the logs on the places indicated by Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

The stable will be built near the new well. Place the logs for the frame, then return to Professor Einstein when you are finished.

professor_einstein

Magnificent. Now we can proceed with the next steps of Project EPCGF-01X.

Quest completed

______________

Planks for Strength

professor_einstein

The logs you’ve erected, according to my durability calculations, won’t stand up to the pressures that Project EPCGF-01X will no doubt place upon them.

This is why you should of course mount these planks – which I so accurately foresaw the necessity of – on the logs in order to reinforce the construction.

Objectives: Mount the planks on the logs where Professor Einstein has indicated.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Place a plank, then use the hammer to set it in place. Do this to all of the planks, then return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

Sumptuous. We’ve now arrived at the next stage of Project EPCGF-01X: roof assembly.

Quest completed

______________

Future Proof Future Roof

professor_einstein

With the frame now constructed, Project EPCGF-01X is on track to completion, and our next step is to install a roof. My initial idea was to cast the latest nano-materials with built-in solar cells, but hopes of finding a modern roof were dashed, as always, by this brutish environment.

After weighing all the alternatives against each other, I eventually came to the conclusion that the cloth the hot air balloon is made of would suffice, even if it is a sub-optimal alternative.

I’ve cut a piece of the canvas with perfect measurements, so you only need to attach it above the logs.

It’s an incredibly easy task, I expect you see you back very soon.

Objectives: Assemble the roof on Project EPCGF-01X.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Place the balloon cloth as the roof on the the new stable then return to Professor Einstein when you are finished.

professor_einstein

Sublime. Now we’ve arrived at the final step in Project EPCGF-01X: laying the floor.

Quest completed

______________

Instead of Concrete and Diamonds

professor_einstein

Project EPCGF-01X can now be rounded off with one final task: the construction of the floor. Instead of a concrete floor with an industrial diamond coating with would have held up for millions of years, I have – after sincere and determined consideration – reached the conclusion that the fir branches you collected will have to do.

Lay out the branches as flooring, Rita.

Objectives: Lay the floor and complete Project EPCGF-01X.

Reputation: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Reputation: (25 points toward building the camp)

Lay down the fir branches and your new stable will be complete from top to bottom!

professor_einstein

Exquisite. Project EPCGF-01X has reached completion. I think we’ve done a good job Rita, let’s give ourselves a little applause.

So, enough with all this giddiness. We have a near-eternity left before this place can be thought of as adequate for even the most rudimentary research.

Quest completed

______________

The Calculations Promise Near-Certainty

professor_einstein

According to my calculations, we can almost certainly count on the mail having been delivered now. Ride over and check the mailbox, Rita.

Objectives: Check to see if any mail has arrived at Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 65 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: (15 toward building the camp)

Retrieve the mail like everyone seems to think you were born to do.

professor_einstein

So, were my calculations correct? Was there any mail?

Two letters!!

The chance of that was indeed slight, but not zero. We should be grateful that “luck” seems to be on our side for once.

Quest completed

______________

Rational People Don’t Eat Hay

professor_einstein

Well, well, yet another salesman wants to set up shop here at our camp. Hmm…

He wants to sell hay, apples, picnic baskets, that sort of thing. Who in the world wants to buy hay? What rational person would eat hay?!

Horses, you say? Ah true, horses do eat hay. Biology isn’t my best subject, you see.

Well, you’ll have to collect this person. A hay-shop isn’t something I expected in my calculations, but I suppose it can’t do any harm? The person in question has sent the letter from Valedale and writes that he intends to go here on foot.

Hmm… The letter was sent several days ago so it’s odd that we’ve yet to meet this person. Ride towards Valedale and see if you can find out what’s happened, Rita.

Objectives: Ride to Valedale and see if you can find the shopkeeper trying to get to Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

You’ll find the wayward shopkeeper at the top of the old elevator.

trond

Hello! Is it me you’re looking for?

Quest completed

______________

An Elevatorphobe’s Nightmare

trond

I’ve been standing here for two full days trying to figure out how I’m going to get down. I don’t like elevators, you see.

I’d probably dare to go down the elevator if I didn’t have all this heavy stuff with me. It weights so much, what if it’s overloaded and collapses?!

You’ve used the elevator with your horse, you say? Well, I suppose it weighs quite a lot, so that’s quite reassuring…

 But, but…

What if the elevator got all worn out when you’ve been riding up and down in it with that horse?! It may not be built for such strain. Have you ever considered that?!

What?

You can go down with the merchandise in the elevator for me? Wow, that’d be perfect! Thank you very much!

Objectives: take the goods and leave them by the bottom of the elevator.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Take Trond’s goods to the bottom of the elevator, then ride back up and speak to him.

trond

Hello again! Are the goods in place at the bottom of the elevator?

Fantastic! Now it’s just me that needs to get down…

Quest completed

______________

So Close, Yet So Far…

trond

Like I said, I don’t like elevators.

Or, well, “don’t like” is probably putting it a little mildly, hehe.

I go into a full and horrifying panic just from being near an elevator, so I’m sure you’ll understand why I got a little bit stuck here. I’ve really tried, but it just never works out… It’s probably best if I just turn around and move to Silverglade Village; it’s nice and flat there, and there’s not an elevator to be seen.

You’ll help me? Oh, how lovely!

Get up on your horse? Okay, but, umm… How will we get down if we don’t take the elevator? You know a way? Okay, I trust you but just don’t ride too close to that elevator!

Objectives: Get yourselves down the cliff without using the elevator.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Take the trail down the side of the cliff that you used when you first discovered the valley. You do not have to race down this time. Drop Trond off at the bottom where you left his crates.

trond

Whew! Finally down! That’s probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done… Using an elevator suddenly doesn’t feel quite so scary.

Quest completed

Return to Trond tomorrow.

Instead of StarTop Cola and Tuna

professor_einstein

Here’s the letter we’ve been waiting for Rita! Something that always pull the tourists in is food. I usually get by on tinned tuna and StarTop Cola. 8 liters for 40 Jorvik Shillings, but most people aren’t as rational as you and I, and happily spend a small fortune on their food.

Anyway, this chap Ed Field seems to be bouncing off the walls with excitement of opening a restaurant here. He apparently runs Jorvik’s most successful guest house, the Wolf Hall Inn, but his entrepreneurial senses see the huge business opportunity in being the first to start up at our up-and-coming tourist magnet!

I honestly believe he’s a little bit insane Rita… To run a successful restaurant here is even more impossible than calculating the exact value of Pi, but people have achieved the impossible before… Everyone said the universe was going to explode, but I managed to divide by zero and it rather seems as though the universe is still here!

Rita, before I overload your poor little brain, you should ride over to this Ed Field character and see what his intentions are.

Objectives: Ride out and talk to Ed Field at Wolf Hall Inn.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Speak to Ed Field in front of the Wolf Hall Inn, in Harvest Counties.

ed_field

Hey there Rita! What can I do for you?

Quest completed

______________

Restaurant at the End of the Universe

ed_field

Rita! Did Professor Einstein send you? Awesome!

This idea is absolutely epic: opening another restaurant there, another branch of the Wolf Hall Inn empire!

An incredible roadside hangout where bus-loads of tourists are gonna stop, eat my culinary masterpieces and see entertainingly entertaining entertainment!

I’m way too busy to do this myself, so I’m leaving the responsibility to one of my best employees. Our new kitchen assistant Igor is showing tons of promise, and has really been eager to advance!

He’s going to be perfect as our new chef-waiter-bouncer-tour group leader-manager-cabaret artist!

No way, Rita! I’m not insane! Haha!

It won’t work to just set him loose on the job without first seeing what he’s made of. He’s only been here two days so there’s a chance I’ve misjudged him, even if I am an amazing judge of character.

You can chat to him if you like… See if you can find any cracks in his amazing personality!

Objectives: Talk to Igor.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Dismount your horse to enter the door into the kitchen. Speak to Igor inside.

igor

Hehe…

Quest completed

______________

We Don’t Endorse Main Course Horse

igor

Hehehe… Dinosaurs… Sounds delicious! Hehe…

So, you’re taking me to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur? Hehe… On board your glorious horse… I saw it outside… What’s its name? Icerunner? Hehe… A little salt… A couple hours in the oven… An apple stuffed into the mouth… Hehe… What? Do I want to eat Icerunner?

Oh, no, no, no, Icerunner is safe now my sweet child, I’d never do such a thing… I promise. Hehehe…

Mmmmm…

(Igor licks his lips and seems to have forgotten that he’s staring pretty intensely at Icerunner. You decide it’s best to speak to Ed Field again.)

Objectives: Tell Ed Field about Igor.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Exit the kitchen and speak to Ed Field about your creeps from Igor.

ed_field

He wanted to EAT Icerunner?! Are you sure?!

Quest completed

______________

One-Too-Many Cooks?

ed_field

Now, now, let’s not be hasty! All geniuses are a little eccentric and I’m sure he didn’t mean it seriously… He was joking with you! Chefs and cooks, y’know… Always a little bit special. Haha!

You don’t think he was joking and that he wants to actually eat your actual horse?

Yeah, yeah, well let’s not get all hung up on the details. This is like one of those problems-that-isn’t-really-a-problem kinda things. Like, imagine if we didn’t have a chef at all? THAT would be a problem.

Well anyway, if you don’t think he’s up to the job, then we’ll just have to test him out.

Hmm…

Try and come up with some ways to put his cookery talents to the test, at the same time giving him a trial run on his financial and entertainment skills. If he doesn’t pass the test, I promise we’ll find someone else!

Objectives: Talk to Igor again.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Return to the kitchen and tell Igor about your plans to test him.

igor

Hehe… Mmm, Icerunner… I’ve missed you… Hehe…

Quest completed

______________

Everyone Loves Cake and Hotdogs!

igor

So Rita… Hehe… You want proof that I can really make delicious flavorful food?

Okay, I’ll make for you my signature dish, Rita… Hehe… I call it Igor’s Paradiso Luxury Taste-Party Gateaux… Hehe… Mmmmm…

You need to help me find some luxury ingredients, Rita… Hehe… Eggs, flour, sugar, cream, strawberries, and one secret special magic ingredient… Hotdogs… Mmmm… Hehe… None of those ingredients are here in the pantry, but they’re certainly in Mr Ed Field’s storage… Hehe…

Get them for me, Rita… Secure those delicious goods for Igor… Hehe… Mmm…

Away with you now, Rita… But you, Icerunner… You can stay here, you big beauty…

What?! I won’t eat Icerunner, Rita… I promise… Hehe… So off you go, Rita…

(You really don’t trust Igor. Who knows what’ll end up in the food if he gets to run the restaurant? You think it’s best to find some other ingredients than those he’s asked for, just to make sure the tests don’t go as well as they should.)

Objectives: Find fake ingredients for Igor.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Leave the kitchen and search around the Wolf Hall Inn to find things for Igor to cook with.

Billiards balls, stones, and rotten eggs. Luxury ingredients, indeed.

Return to Igor when you have found all of your ‘luxury ingredients.’

igor

Ooohhh thank you… Hehe…

Soon, you will have the joy of tasting the finest food you’ve ever eaten… Hehe…

Quest completed

Let’s see now… Hehe… Take a step back so I can prepare my Paradiso Luxury Taste-Party Gateaux… Hehe…

You too, Icerunner… We wouldn’t want anything to happen to you… Not right now, anyway… Hehe…

So there we have it… Into the oven goes the cake… Hehe…

Objectives: Talk to Igor again.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Eck, do you smell that??

igor

Viola! Igor’s Paradiso Luxury Taste-Party Gateaux! Hehe…

Hmm… Doesn’t smell quite like normal…

Quest completed

Nobly Refraining from the First Bite

igor

Hehe… Would you like to try some delicious, delicious cake, Rita? Hehe… Almost as delicious as barbequed hor… Hehe… Of course, umm… I don’t eat horses… Hehe… Mmmmm…

You think Mr Ed Field should have the honor of tasting the first bite?

That’s very noble of you Rita, hehe… Well, well, I really hope he likes it, Rita… Hehe…

Objectives: Give Igor’s Paradiso Luxury Taste-Party Gateaux to Ed Field.

Rewards: 40 Jorvik Shillings, 60 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

I claim no responsibility for this!

ed_field

Bring the train wreck of a cake to Ed Field.

Oooh! Check that out! What a creation! Igor’s Paradiso Luxury Taste-Party Gateaux! I just have to try it.

Chomp! Hmm…

Scoff! Ooooooohhhh…

This… This is…

THIS IS THE GREATEST CAKE I’VE EVER EATEN! PARADISO INDEED!

Quest completed

Well, that didn’t go as planned. Return to the kitchen to try another test on Igor.

Instead of a Guitar

igor

Hehe… So Mr Ed Field wants to see if I can give the guests an entertainingly entertaining time? Hehe… He…

He.

….

Errrrmmmm… Entertainment isn’t exactly my thing… Hehe… But I can maybe play a little guitar for the guests… Hehe… Bring my guitar to me, Rita…

(You really don’t trust Igor. Who knows what’ll end up in the food if he gets to run the restaurant? You think it’s best to find some other kind of instrument for Igor instead of his guitar, just to make sure the tests don’t go as well as they should.)

Objectives: Find some other kind of instrument than a guitar for Igor to play.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Exit the kitchen and see if you can find some other kind of instrument. Return to Igor when you have found your prize.

igor

Umm, Rita… That’s not a guitar… Hehe…

What, is that all? Hehe… Oh, Rita…

Quest completed

______________

The Dulcet Tones of a Birchwood Horn

igor

Hehe… Are you sure Mr Ed Field will like this? Hehe… I’ve never played a birchwood horn before, Rita… It’s not at all hard you say? Mr Ed Field loves wind instruments? Hehe… Okay then, Rita… But what should I play? Mr Ed Field can’t get enough of progressive improvised jazz, you say? Hehe… Okay then, Rita… Hehe…

Objectives: Ask Ed Field what he thought of Igor’s entertainment.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 45 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Beautiful, err, music?

ed_field

Sniffle!

Magic. Simply magic.

Who knew Igor was such a wonderfully gifted musician? He’s going to be a runaway hit with the guests with those kinds of beautiful melodies. So beautifully gentle… Reminds me of my mama’s lullabies. I feel so relaxed and harmonized…

Quest completed

That definitely didn’t go as planned. Return to the kitchen to give Igor one more test as a last ditch effort to ruin his chances of going to Dino Valley.

An Unexpected Test

igor

Hehe… Oh, Rita… You want proof that I can handle finances?

Hehe… I swear I’m an economic maverick, Rita… I swear this to you, my friend… Hehe… I actually have a degree from the University of Jorvik in business economics… Hehe… Here, take a look at my precious certificate… Hehe… It’s beautiful, Rita… So beautiful… Hehe…

Take a look over there, Rita… Look very closely at my ledger hehe… It shows every single Jorvik Shilling that I’ve spent on food here at Wolf Hall Inn… Hehe… Mmm…

Show it to Mr Ed Field and he’ll surely see that my finances are made of solid gold… Hehe… He has nothing to worry about, Rita… Tell him Igor will never let him down, hehe…

(You really don’t trust Igor. Who knows what’ll end up in the food if he gets to run the restaurant? If you had a pen, you could add a few extra zeros here and there, just to fiddle with the ledger and make sure Ed Field sees that the tests don’t go as well as they should for Igor.)

Objectives: Falsify the numbers in Igor’s ledger and give it to Ed Field.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Pick up the pen on the kitchen counter, then use it on the ledger that is set out on the table near the door.

When you are done messing things up, take the ledger out to Ed Field.

ed_field

Oooh! A ledger? Igor has recorded every single Jorvik Shilling he’s spent here at Wolf Hall Inn? Magic! What attention to detail he’s got!

I should read it very carefully, you say? Is that really necessary?

Okay, okay, I’ll take a closer look.

Now, let’s see here…

… 2lb flour, 200 Jorvik Shillings! Hmm…

… 1 gallon of milk, 5,000 Jorvik Shillings! Oooookaaaayy…

… 1 egg, 100,000 Jorvik Shillings!!!

Oh my gosh Rita, I don’t know what to say…

THE GUY IS A FLAMING GENIUS! He truly knows what we should be spending money on! This 100,000 Jorvik Shilling egg must have been something truly incredible, obviously worth every single Shilling! There’s always a price for quality, Rita, that’s what I always say! You get what you pay for in this world!

No? Alright, no worries. I’ll arrange transport for him, you just need to meet him there. Go give him the good news, Rita!

Objectives: Give Igor the good news.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Hmm… Okay, okay. I’ve got total confidence in Igor but I can of course try and work something out, since it’s you, Rita.

Igor is amazing in every way, but he’s going to be so busy with the restaurant that it’s probably best I send one of my best employees along with you both.

Here’s my keychain. Unlock the door to the storage up there and tell Franke to come here. You don’t need to worry, Franke’s a diamond guy with a heart of gold… He gets a little bit aggro sometimes, but just give him this chicken leg and he’ll be putty in your hands. Sweeter than a kitten.

Objectives: Unlock the door to Ed Field’s storage and talk to Franke.

Speak to Trond at Nic Stoneground’s camp to see how well he made it.

Calculating the Perfect Place: The Einstein Way

trond

Hello Rita! Finally here!

Professor Einstein figured out that this is the perfect place for my little shop. She seems to know what’ she’s talking about, so I think I can trust her. Would you do me the honor of taking down the sign that shows the shop as being closed?

Thanks, that’s the only thing left to do before I can open.

Objectives: Take down the sign that shows the shop as being closed.

Rewards: 80 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (50 points toward building the camp)

Take down the closed sign to open the shop then speak to Trond when the shop is ready.

trond

Thanks for all your help Rita! I hope you’ll visit me in my little shop sometime soon!

Now it’s time to open up! See ya soon Rita!

Quest completed

There is now a farm shop open at the camp that you can purchase hay and other horse treats.

Speak to Ed Field in front of Wolf Hall Inn to see if Igor and Franke have started their journey to Dino Valley.

Birth of a 3-Star Restaurant

ed_field

Hi Rita! You just missed the transport to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur. Igor and Franke just drove off with a truck full of everything they need to get started with setting up our 3-star restaurant.

You can just meet up with Igor at the camp and see that everything’s in order, right?

Objectives: Meet Igor and Franke at Nic Stoneground’s camp.

Rewards: 60 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Well, I’m here, but where are they? Maybe Professor Einstein knows where they are.

professor_einstein

Igor? There’s been no Igor here?

I did just hear an awful noise from down by the lake though…

______________

Cooks on Thin Ice

professor_einstein

You mean some kind of transport should’ve arrived with a cook, a waiter, and a whole heap of furniture? Mm, that noise I heard earlier could most likely have come from a truck driving straight into the lake. That’s really quite probable.

Why didn’t I check what the noise was? Rita, I’ve never really been that interested in vehicles, I’m afraid.

But, now I’m aware of the situation, it sounds as though it has every likelihood of being really rather serious. Hurry down to the lake and see if you can’t find the transport.

Objectives: Find Igor and Franke in the lake in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

You can get to them by going down to the lake on the camp side but there are large gaps in the ice and you have to take a very long way around.

The quickest way I found is to ride the road back toward the elevator, then turn off just on the other side of the camp.

There were actually a few things from the truck lying around by the lake Rita… I saw them when I was floating around… Hehe… Crates that hadn’t sunk… Hehe… If we’re lucky, Rita… I hope we’re lucky… Hehe…

Would you be able to ride down and… Hehe… Get them Rita? It’d be very nice of you, hehe…

Objectives: Look for the wooden crates down by the frozen lake.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Ride back down to where you rescued Igor, and pick up the crates that you can find, then return to the camp.

igor

Ohhh, mmm… Look at that… Hehe… Seems as though a few items made it… Hehe…

Now Rita… Let’s open them up and see what’s inside… Hehe…

Hehe… Chairs… Hehe, mmm… Tables… Oohhh and a few little goodies, Rita…

This should be okay… I can open the restaurant with these lovely articles, Rita… Even if it’ll be a little on the lean side… Hehe…

Rita, hehe… You’re welcome, so welcome, to join us anytime for something to eat… Hehe… And as for Icerunner… Well, I’d love to have him for dinner… Hehe… To join us for dinner, I mean… Mmm… Hehe… Then I declare this restaurant open… Hehe…

Surprise, Surprise! Reunited with a Beloved Brother!

professor_einstein

Frank’s alive! Oh wow, Rita! My genius brother Frank is really alive!!

But what on earth has happened to him?! He’s acting like some kind of zombie… Something terrible must have happened to him… But don’t be afraid! I’m going to help you! Me and Rita, a reliable character I’ve stumbled across in this awful valley.

Rita! Say hello to Frank!

Objectives: Talk to Professor Einstein again.

Rewards: 90 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 100 with The Stoneground Expedition

What are the odds!

professor_einstein

Oh, Rita, how wonderful! It seems as though Frank really likes you!

Oh, Frank… My dear, dear brother…

Right. Good. Enough with the sentimentality. No time here for feelings.

It’s time for me to call in all the favors I’m owed by my colleagues at the university: I’m going to make sure that we get a delivery of all the very best and most advanced medical equipment available. That way I can diagnose Frank and then find a cure for whatever bizarre affliction is tormenting him.

This will take time, but Frank disappeared ten years ago, so another couple days won’t make any difference. Until then, we’ve got other business to be getting on with. We mustn’t let such things distract us from our plan!

Quest completed

______________

Logically Planned Fun

professor_einstein

Ah well Rita… There’s nothing we can do to help Frank right now, so there’s no point in wasting any more time thinking about it. You’ve no doubt already concluded what the next logical step of our plan is, hmm?

No?

Hmm… Okay. I’ll explain. We’ve already built facilities for horses here, so clearly the next step is to ensure that there’s something for horses and their riders to do. I hear that races are very popular, which means the construction of a race course has a very obvious place here in our plans. A race course which is both challenging and fun. Yes.

Nic had an idea – which was surprisingly not that bad… He said we should try to create a race course which gets people more interested in learning about science and nature at the same time as racing! With a combination of fun, some kind of learning, and sport.

That nobody’s though of it before? I know! It’ll be an international superhit, as Nic put it.

Ah well, enough with enthusiasm. First, we need to work out that the route I’ve already calculated doesn’t include intolerable risks for the riders. I want you to ride out onto the ice and make sure there are no more than three deep cracks along my proposed route.

Mostly just a mere formality – they’re very simple calculations – but you know as well as I do at this stage that we can’t take anything for granted when probability is involved.

So there we go. Off with you now.

Objectives: Look for cracks in the ice on the lake.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Inspect the marked areas on your map. Then return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

So, no cracks in the ice. Splendid. Full steam ahead then!

What? Three cracks? Unbelievable…

Ah well, I suppose I’ll just have to go over my calculations again and determine a new optimal race course. While I’m busy with that, there are lots of other things you could be getting on with before we open up the race.

Quest completed

______________

Favorably Frozen

professor_einstein

For the races, we need markers which indicate where competitors are supposed to ride. These usually come in the form of flags, but it took me just under four minutes to work out seven different designs that are better than flags. Again, though, we’re limited by the depressing technological level of this environment so I suppose we’ll just have to stick to whatever materials we can find around here and of course follow the tradition of flags when it comes to marking the outer limits of the course.

A bonus – the only bonus – of the cold climate here is that the ice is really strong. I have – using thorough experiments – arrived at the conclusion that the best way to construct race limit indication devices is by using icicles. Icicles that you’ll of course have to collect, you understand.

Collect icicles so we can make race limit indication devices.

Objectives: Find icicles for Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 40 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Collect several large icicles from around the camp. Be sure not to break them!

professor_einstein

Hmm…

These icicles are of a relatively acceptable quality. Good work Rita.

Quest completed

______________

Suitable Materials for Race Limit Indication Devices

professor_einstein

Traditionally, race limit indication devices (or flags as you people might call them) are constructed from differently colored fabrics depending on whether they stand on the left or right-hand sides of the checkpoints. Far from optimal, if you ask me, but I suppose we have to consider how regular racers aren’t as rational as you or I, and may struggle to see the obvious advantages of a multidimensional matrix structure where – with a mere glance – the flag shows everything from optimum speed and angle, to the current longitude and height above sea level. People are usually very narrow-minded and not open to new ideas, Rita. People make me sick.

To construct our race limit indication devices, we need appropriate material. I’ve noticed that there’s a variety of lichen in different colors here in the valley. Collect the white, black, and red lichen. Hurry up.

Objectives: Gather white, black, and red lichen for Professor Einstein.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

The lichen hangs in little triangles off the tree branches around the camp. Collect enough of each color, then return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

Lichen. Hugely suboptimal material, but it’s not as though we can be very choosy out here in the sticks…

new_and_improved_nic

Did you not hear the mailbox rustling out there? A.A.E. have surely analyzed the test samples we sent and have no doubt arrived at some form of epic conclusion! How exciting! Can you check the mail for me?

Objectives: Wait for the test results which will probably come with tomorrow’s mail.

Now let’s see what they’ve written… Hmm… Well… Nope… Really?!

Exciting…

Ah, so it’s like THAT…

Hmm…

…Mmm…

Ohhh…

Cool!

I need to figure some of this out before I can properly disclose more details for you. The skeleton seems to be that of a Liopleuredon… But apparently it’s only 20,000 years old. That’s nothing in palaeontological terms. The dinosaurs basically died out 65 MILLION years ago…

I need to give this a little more thought, and maybe the penny will eventually drop.

Exploring Icepeak Island

new_and_improved_nic

A beautiful new day, isn’t it? The frost bites like a cobra and the cold mist penetrates through your clothing like an old aunt’s wet kisses.

Well. Ready for a new expedition?

Good! I’d like to document and map the rock formation that seems to form some kind of island in the Frozen Valelake’s northeastern parts. I’ve fixed up the equipment so it will probably work even better today than yesterday.

Objectives: Document and explore the places marked out on the map.

Rewards: 145 Jorvik Shillings, 75 XP

Reputation: 45 with The Stoneground Expedition

You can follow The Frozen Road out of Nic’s camp and there will be a big rope bridge you can cross to get to the top of the island. There are several exploring locations on the island, and there are also two down on the lake’s surface around the base of the island.

Use your equipment just as you did before with your practice. Use the camera three times to take a picture. Place the binoculars, use them to measure the angles of the land, then pick them up again. Place the map, use the marker to draw in the area, then pick up the map again. This will complete exploring one location; there are five locations with each new exploring expedition. All locations will be marked on your map.

When you have explored all of the locations, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

Woot! You found a citadel of ice? An opening with icicles formed like the teeth of a huge jaw? This sounds weirdly familiar. It must be the legend of the Ice Witch and that’s almost certainly her lair, Icendell… I have to figure some of this out and dig around in my memory a little, as well as in my old books. I’ll get back to you when I’ve figured out more information about the place…

As long as you remember that you’d do well to stay away from Icendell. It’s a dangerous place, you hear? A dangerous place indeed.

Quest completed

______________

Discovering the Eastern Crater Area

new_and_improved_nic

Now it’s time to see more of the area on the other side of the Frozen Valelake. Explore the places I’ve marked out and then come back to me. This is a slightly longer expedition, but you and Icerunner can manage such a hardship, right?

Objectives: Document and explore the places marked out on the map.

Rewards: 145 Jorvik Shillings, 75 XP

Reputation: 45 with The Stoneground Expedition

The Frozen Road winds around the lake, and you can follow it if you want, but you can also cut across the lake to get there quicker.

When you have explored all of the locations, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

The Ashen Steep, The Ice Forest… It seems like there are a lot of interesting places in there. You seemed to know a little about an area beyond the crater as well? Interesting…

I’ll have a little think and see if I can find any more information about these areas… If I come up with anything, I’ll share everything I know with you, just so you know.

Quest completed

______________

Explore the Valley of the Frozen Mist

new_and_improved_nic

The Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur extends way more to the east than I first thought. The observations you made on your expeditions were most interesting. Exploring the Valley of the Frozen Mist will be an even longer expedition than before.

You might be a little tired and a little hungry? You don’t have to do it today if you don’t want to or feel unable. But it has to be done as soon as possible!

Objectives: Document and explore the places marked out on the map.

Rewards: 145 Jorvik Shillings, 75 XP, Engineer’s Saddle

Rewards: 45 with The Stoneground Expedition

The Valley of the Frozen Mist makes a sort of backwards “J” shape which you can see on the map in the blue grey area of the lower right side of the map of Dino Valley. The road you explored around in the previous quest leads right up to the top of the “J.” Ride off the road into the trees to the entrance of the valley. It isn’t a very obvious entrance, but there is only one way in. Follow the cliffs as they funnel you into the valley.

When you have explored all of the locations, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

The Valley of the Frozen Mist seems incredibly interesting… I’ll ponder on the facts I have and see if I can come up with any more information. If I receive more information, I will of course share it with you.

Quest completed

______________

Explore the Mountain in the North

new_and_improved_nic

The crater’s northern mountain is fascinating. According to legend and old travelogues I’ve read, there’s apparently a frozen gate in the mountain… Could it be that we’ve found something really exciting, Rita? This expedition is not as long as the others so I hope you can go through with it for me?

In the meantime, I’ll stay here in camp and try to figure out some of the information I have.

Objectives: Document and explore the places marked out on the map.

Rewards: 145 Jorvik Shillings, 75 Jorvik Shillings, Dark Blue Mittens

Reputation: 45 with The Stoneground Expedition

Follow the road north out of the camp. Just after the two switchbacks down towards the lake, there will be another road leading up off to the left. If you come to the rope bridge, you’ve gone too far. Follow the second road up the cliff to Icengate.

When you have explored all of the locations, return to Nic.

new_and_improved_nic

You found Icengate? That’s incredibly exciting! This means you’ve found the gateway to the secret land of this enigmatic people!

Quest completed

______________

The Legend of Icengate

new_and_improved_nic

The people who apparently live beyond Icengate are called the Kallters, and nobody really knows much about them. I have some legends and reports of the expeditions that were over a hundred years ago, and they talk about a mysterious people who were shy and lived secluded in the mountains.

There are many theories about them and their unique culture. The old expedition reports say that they sometimes appeared in the area and seemed to collect things from the valley. They apparently had some kind of horse that no one has seen before, I read in a travelogue somewhere… Hmm…

I’ll give a little more thought to this and look through my books to see if I can find more information about them. You do want more information, right?

Objectives: Listen to Nic as he tells you about Icengate.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 25 with The Stoneground Expedition

Yes, tell me more!

new_and_improved_nic

Good. When I know more about the Kallters, I can get back to you with more information.

This could take a while.

Tracks in the Snow

new_and_improved_nic

It’s said that there are tracks in the snow next to us on the Frozen Valelake! It could be traces of the legendary Yeti! Get out there immediately and try to track him down! Imagine if we were the first to find the Yeti!

Bring the camera and take a picture if you catch a glimpse of him! A picture of the Yeti would be worth a fortune! Not to mention what it would mean for science…

Objectives: Examine the tracks in the snow.

Rewards: 45 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 30 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride down onto the lake and find the first footprint, then follow the trail to see where it leads…

Return to Nic when you have found where the trail ends.

new_and_improved_nic

Bah! The tracks ended in the mountains? Typical. It obviously had time to be snowed on again. Snow whirling around on the winds have the chance to quickly cover up any tracks., making it really hard to trace that darned Yeti. If he even exists…

I think it might be worth taking a more thorough look at Icengate. Look for tracks or signs of having been used recently. If the Kallters are still there, then they leave absolutely no traces of themselves behind, it would seem!

Salutations to you, Rita and Icerunner!

Rita, my friend, you do indeed possess a decidedly beauteous name.

We conduct ourselves most peacefully, and wish no harm to you and your associates. We live in and with the utmost peace. I assume you declare yourselves as friends, and not foes?

Objectives: Listen to Nanook. Accept if you wish to be friends with Nanook and Sedna.

Rewards: 8 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Reputation: 500 with The Kallters: Outer Expedition

Pleased to meet you both!

nanook

Ah, splendid! We have no intention of causing you any perturbance and would delight in learning of your assurance to the same.

It is we who are the Kallter people; merely simple hunter-gatherers. We belong to the Outer Expedition. Occasionally we journey beyond the borders of our secure society to gather the resources necessary to sustain our people.

From time to time, we find ourselves in rather urgent need of certain commodities and thus face the necessity of gathering that of which we are in need from here, in the outside world.

We would shudder to think that we had, in our pursuits, disturbed a friend…

Quest completed

Having now met the Kallter people, you can begin earning reputation with their faction to gain access to purchasing a Fjord Horse.

You can take on two daily quests of gathering, from Nanook. You can also collect items they need during your adventures around Dino Valley. Items appear within the landscape at random intervals, though there are specific locations that they will always appear. You will know an item you can pick up by the yellow sparkles floating around it. Click on the item to pick it up. It will then be stored in your inventory until you return to the Kallters. Speak with Sedna, and select the name of each item which you have in your inventory to trade it in. There is no limit to the number of items you can pick up and trade in, you simply have to have the time and patience to search the valley for them.

When you have gained enough reputation with the Kallters, the Fjord horses will appear in the shelter behind Nanook, and you can purchase one the same way that you do any of the other horses scattered around Jorvik.

This year I have decided that I will change my usual policy about posting special event quests. For the last two years I have always gotten a lot of questions about the locations of the missing Valentine’s letters in Silvergalde. So this year I will post them but please know that I do not have the locations memorized and I do not have any maps already done so I will not be able to post them ahead of time. I will have to play through the quests to make the maps ready. All I ask is that you please be patient before asking about the letter locations. I am not usually able to log on SSO until the evenings. I will try to get the maps done Wednesday night; if not I will have them done by Thursday, for sure.

Hope you all have a great week and happy riding!

Chaos Theory and a Parallel Universe

professor_einstein

It’s no use Rita, the only logical conclusion to be drawn is that the ice on the lake is of inferior quality and that we should scrap all our plans for a race. It’s probably just as well that we finish all the projects here in the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur at the same time, conditions for success, according to my calculations, only 4.2%.

So, that’s it. Nice to meet you Rita, maybe we’ll see each other again in the future.

Why are the cracks in the ice such a problem? Why can’t we just adapt the race route by hand? Rita! Such ramshackle improvisations will simply not suffice! Either the race follows our planned route, or there’ll be no race!

Why must everything conform to the plan, you ask? Think about it, Rita, the alternative is that instead the plan would bend and conform to reality…

Chaos! Do you see? Chaos!!

Hmm… Chaos…

Aha! I’ve got it!

The chaos theory Rita, have you heard of it? Okay, what about parallel universes, then?

No? Oh well, never mind.

It’s really very simple. If I re-write the plan so that it takes into account fluctuating multi-dimensional parameters, there will of course be an infinite number of optimal results. Do you understand?

Alright. Let me explain so you understand. If we find a crack, we simply change the race route away from it, you see?

That’s what you said in the first place?

Haha, I hardly think so Rita, you rambled on about some kind of random improvisation. It’s exactly that kind of randomness that has no place in this plan. My plan is exact!

Off you go now and look for cracks. Hurry up.

Objectives: Find cracks in the ice on the lake.

Rewards: 125 Jorvik Shillings, 60 XP, Black Winter Gloves

Reputation: (50 points toward building the camp)

Ride out on the lake and look for cracks along the race route. Report back to Professor Einstein when you are finished.

professor_einstein

So, where were the cracks, Rita? Okay… Well, let’s just get their positions into my equations and… There we have it!

Now I know exactly how the race course should be routed.

Quest completed

Flagging Up the Flags

professor_einstein

Here are the finished race limit indication devices, Rita. Set them out at the spots I’ve marked along the course. Obviously, you don’t need to set up every single flag, just the most crucial ones. Nic said he’ll help put the rest of them up later, because I’ve got another job for you to be getting on with. So, yeah. Hurry up.

Objectives: Put out the flags in the places along the race route that Professor Einstein has indicated.

Rewards: 35 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Place out one of each flag at each checkpoint in the race; white on the left and red on the right.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Yes, wouldn’t want your precious little brain to freeze, now would we?

professor_einstein

Ahh, would you look at that? A letter! This time the probability was incredibly close to 100%, so I’ve already prepared all we need for the next stage of the plan.

How could I have been so sure?

Elementary, my dear Rita. I saw the mailman put something in the box.

Why didn’t I get the mail myself, if I saw it arrive?

Rita. We have established a most successful routine when I tell you to collect the post, and then you collect it. Why should we try to fix something that isn’t broken? That would be quite illogical, I’m sure you’ll agree.

This Looks Like a Job For… An Engineer!

professor_einstein

This letter is from Berzelius the Engineer, a leading biological engineer from the University of Jorvik. I’ve called in all my favors and it seems Berzelius the Engineer is the result of my efforts. If anybody can help Frank, it’s her.

Who’s going to take care of the race, you ask?

What do you mean, “take care of the race”?

Ohh, I see. I should’ve thought of that. In my plan, the race was taken care of by an autonomous AI system, but even something as simple as that isn’t possible in this valley. Ah well, Berzelius probably needs something to do after she’s helped Frank.

The Engineer has already been in Valedale for more than 2.7 hours. Ride there and get her, Rita. Make sure she gets here as quickly as possible. Hurry up.

Objectives: Ride to Valedale and talk to Berzelius the Engineer.

Oh well. I’m sure that my new boss Professor Einstein can explain. I hope she’s got some exciting tasks for me… So, yes! How are we getting there?

You want me to ride with you on your horse?

We’re going where? Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur? Never heard of it.

A Biological and Mechanical Diagnosis

professor_einstein

Berzelius the Engineer, I’m your new managing supervisor, Elsa Einstein. I understand that you’re an expert in both biological and mechanical sciences. Your task is to diagnose my brother, Frank Einstein, and discover what exactly is wrong with him.

When you have completed your job, I have another incredibly important problem that you can no doubt help alleviate with a solution of some kind.

Objectives: Talk to Berzelius the Engineer again.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

A Serious Case of Lightening Strikes…

berzelius_the_engineer

This was really a very easy diagnosis, Professor.

After a simple visual inspection, I can immediately give you a precise answer to what Frank’s problem is. All symptoms indicate a severe case of multiple lightening strikes to the head.

What was the other problem you needed help with Professor Einstein?

Objectives: Talk to Professor Einstein again.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

I guess she’s an expert for a reason…

Overqualified for the Job

professor_einstein

Allow me to give you a little more background, Berzelius. I’m in the middle of executing a plan to turn this primitive place into a first-class research station of the very highest international standard. In this plan, I seem to have overlooked a minor detail, but I’m sure you can provide me with a solution to this slight complication.

I want you to start and finish the horse-borne contests we’ve organized on the nearby lake. You will also manage timing and answer questions from whichever horse-borne tourists may visit the area. With your knowledge of biology and mechanics, you’re perfectly suited to the role, if somewhat overqualified. Do you understand your duties?

Objectives: Talk to Berzelius the Engineer again.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (25 points toward building the camp)

You may have been reassigned for good reasons, but we never said you would like it. Hey, at least be glad she hasn’t made you the designated mail-fetching-monkey.

berzelius_the_engineer

Race leader?

Umm, I rather think that’s a little beneath my potential. A task like this would be so unchallenging that I would worry about how bad it would be for my psyche.

It’s an order, you say?

Are you sure? Well, in that case, Professor Einstein, I’m afraid I have to resign. I need to consider my health above anything else.

If I have an alternative solution?

Hmm…

Strong as an Ox, Stubborn as a Mule

berzelius_the_engineer

A solution that benefits everyone is if my dog Swedenborg takes care of the tasks around the horse races. He’s more than qualified for this kind of work, he appreciates the company, and he loves meeting new people as well!

How can a dog take care of such complex tasks, you ask?

Well, Rita, Swedenborg is no ordinary dog. I’ve made a few genetic adjustments here and there, implanting properties from other organisms to be able to make him into the smartest dog in the world. He’ll be able to take care of this without a doubt.

How he’s changed? Well, he’s as strong as an ox, as fast as a horse, has the warm and cozy fur as a sheep, and is stubborn as a mule. You understand the principle, right?

Talk to him yourself. His speech center isn’t especially well-developed but he understands everything you say to him. I myself am off to talk to Professor Einstein about how I think she should find some more suitable tasks for a researcher of my caliber.

Objectives: Talk to Swedenborg the dog.

The Escape Route From This Awful Valley

professor_einstein

Berzelius the Engineer and I have talked, and we’ve come up with a solution, Rita. The engineer is to begin a major biological experiment in the near future. She has a theory that, through genetic manipulation of the fir trees growing in the valley, we could accelerate the greenhouse effect locally. She believes that within three months we could have a tropical climate here! Incredible, no? I can picture it now: the lake has turned into a South Sea lagoon, palm trees instead of fir trees, a warm breeze instead of a biting north wind… Oooh, it’s simply wonderful…

So. Enough dreaming. Now we come to the next step in the plan. The balloon. I don’t think it’ll be too hard to repair it, but I haven’t examined it closely yet. Rita, examine the balloon and inspect the damage.

If we repair the hot air balloon Rita, we can get out of this dreary valley and fly wherever we want… Maybe the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva?

Or perhaps we can travel to the Galapagos Islands and walk in Darwin’s footsteps… Aaaahh…

Enough dreaming I said! Goodness, Rita. Inspect the balloon now. Hurry up.

Objectives: Examine the rest of Nic’s hot air balloon.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Well we definitely can’t inflate the balloon since we used all the fabric for the roof of the stable. Nice planning there, Einstein…

professor_einstein

What did you say? The burner is broken, the balloon fabric is basically useless, and the basket is destroyed.

Well, okay. This is probably the first project of ours where I feel good about our chances of success.

Quest completed

______________

Balloon Crash Models

professor_einstein

Your observations are consistent with my own findings, and luckily, I’ve already prepared a plan for this. According to a model I set up to calculate the location of all the balloon’s missing parts, we have incredibly good chances of repairing the balloon if we just collect enough bits of it.

I want you to ride down onto the ice and start looking for balloon parts. There’s probably a whole bunch of junk there too, so only bring back the stuff that seems useful.

Objectives: Look for parts of Nic’s crashed balloon on the lake ice.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Junk… Junk… Junk… Oooh what’s this?

When you have found enough parts for the balloon return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

Let me have a look at the parts you’ve found, Rita. Hmm…

Most of the parts are good enough to use but there’s not enough material here by a long shot. We’ll obviously not find any gas for the burner lying around on the ice either, but we’ll just have to find another way of getting hold of some, I suppose.

Quest completed

______________

Primitive Methods in a Primitive Place

professor_einstein

Like I said, we need gas for the balloon. Normally, I’d be able to get hold of some very easily at my lab, but here we have to make do with more primitive methods. Here’s a natural gas acquisition device I made. Well, yes, Rita, it is indeed a balloon. Nicely observed.

I have deduced that in this awful valley there are a number of geysers, and it should be possible to fill the balloon with gas from them. It should be a simple task as long as you follow my instructions. As everyone knows, geysers are active in a most regular fashion.

What you need to do is hold the balloon above the geyser at just the right moment, immediately before it starts to spray water. Right in that moment, seconds before the water starts spraying, the concentration of gas is so high that it should be possible to fill the natural gas acquisition device. Do you understand?

Good. Off you go then. Hurry up.

Objectives: Fill the balloons with gas from the geysers all around the lake. You can only fill them with gas in the seconds before the geyser starts spraying water. The geysers are only active ever other minute, so you might need to wait a little while before the right moment comes…

Rewards: 60 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP

Reputation: (15 points toward building the camp)

Ride out to one of the two geyser fields around the lake. Dismount your horse and approach one of the geysers. The erupt at regular intervals. It is easiest to stay put at one geyser and wait for it to spout. You will have only a few seconds to use the balloon, so it is best to hold the balloon over the geyser, then release your cursor button when the sparkles appear.

Fill the two balloons, then return to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

Glory be. This gas probably won’t be enough, but it’s a start.

Quest completed

______________

The Fabric Gatherer

professor_einstein

In order to have a working balloon, we need to assemble the textiles you’ve collected into a single, spherical object. Well yes, exactly Rita, we’re going to sew a balloon.

Sew together the pieces of fabric you found and we’ll see if we’ve collected enough.

Objectives: Use the needle and thread to sew the pieces of fabric together.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Dismount your horse to begin repairing the balloon. Place the fabric, then use the needle to sew it together. When you have sewn all of the pieces, speak to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

There wasn’t enough fabric? Hmm, I guessed as much. We’ll just have to collect more, simple as that.

Quest completed

______________

Getting It Right in the End…

professor_einstein

A critical component of the balloon is the burner itself which fills the balloon with hot air. The burner is broken but there’s just one small part missing, and the burner is of course useless without it.

It’s not possible to say which part exactly is missing, so just try these parts to see if they fit.

Objectives: Repair the burner.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (10 points toward building the camp)

Dismount your horse to try repairing the burner. Test out the parts on it to see if they are the correct parts you need. Speak to Professor Einstein when you are done.

professor_einstein

The parts were all wrong? Oh, I thought that might happen. The important missing piece must still be missing out on the ice.

Quest completed

______________

Paint a Rumor…

professor_einstein

The basket that carries you underneath the balloon will also need to be repaired. It would be possible to carry passengers by asking them to hold onto rope dangling from the balloon, but it’s not exactly an optimal solution. My view is that since tourists have a tendency to spread rumors about dangers such as this, we should repair the basket in full, even if it takes a little extra time.

Take all the twigs, string and other things you found earlier, and try to repair the basket. Hurry up.

Objectives: Repair the hot air balloon’s basket.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: (5 points toward building the camp)

Dismount your horse to begin repairing the basket. Place all of the material down, then speak to Professor Einstein.

professor_einstein

It didn’t work out? The stuff you found wasn’t enough to repair it?

Ah well. I suppose it’s just a case of looking for more stuff then, Rita. If we do that at the same time as continuing with our attempts at a repair, then we’ll no doubt have a fully-functioning balloon in no time.

Quest completed

Return to Professor Einstein when you have completed Phase 4.

When Lightning Strikes Twice

berzelius_the_engineer

Hi Rita! I’ve thought a little more about Frank’s affliction and I think I’ve got a solution!

My plan is quite simply genius, even if I do say so myself. Frank will surely be back to his old self in no time, with only a small chance that he’ll die a spectacular death. But life is full of risks, as my old dad used to say. We just need to keep our fingers crossed that it’ll go well! Have a positive mental attitude, Rita! PMA!

As I’m sure you’ll remember, Frank was sort of ‘zombified’ by a lightning strike to the head. The solution is as easy as it is logical!

We just need to subject his brain to a similarly strong electric shock, but this time we let the current flow in the opposite direction. My theory is that when Frank’s brain goes through this kind of inverted anti-lightning, it’ll go right back to all of its normal settings. Doesn’t that sound good?

You look a little bit skeptical, Rita, but you can trust me! You want to know if I’ve tried this technology before? Oh my days, of course not. The whole point is to be ground-breaking with this and hopefully take home one, maybe two Nobel prizes.

Now you’ll have to stop with all the questions, we can discuss more later. Here’s a lightning analysis unit; ride to the places I’ve marked out and push the button. The machine will analyze the area and let you know if it’s somewhere that lightning has struck twice in the past. Find such a place Rita and then I can tell you all about how to capture a lightning bolt.

Good luck!

Objectives: Use the lightning analysis unit on the spots that have been marked on the map. When you’ve found a place where lightning has struck twice, go back and tell Berzelius the Engineer.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride down to the lake and turn to the northeast. There is a small island, the location you need is at the top of the hill, when you follow a small spiral around the outside edge of the hill to get to the top.

You can check all of the areas marked on your map, but you can go directly to the one you need, to save time.

berzelius_the_engineer

Good work. The place you’ve found is perfect!

Quest completed

______________

More Kick Than 20,000 Car Batteries!

berzelius_the_engineer

So, now we’ve found a spot where lightning is going to strike enough times to be able to charge the super battery 100% with electricity! What super battery am I talking about? Why, this one right here that I ordered from cBay! It’s really great, Rita!

It only cost 1000 Jorvik Shillings and is apparently more effective than 20,000 car batteries! And if that wasn’t cool enough, it’s totally biodegradable, nicely designed, and can be used as a rather lovely footstool in the bedroom. Unbelievable, no? As soon as I read all about it, I ordered two!

A scam? What do you mean, scam?

You’re saying it’s a scam and I’ve been tricked? That it’s just some con artist who put the listing up on cBay to scam people’s money off them?

There’s really people who’d do that? That’s totally illogical!

Oh dear…

Well what do we do now?

“Cough, cough… Ahem!” (Professor Einstein seems very keen to get yours and Berzelius the Engineer’s attention…)

Objectives: Talk to Elsa Einstein.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: 5 with The Stoneground Expedition

Speak to Professor Einstein, she clearly has an idea, maybe even one that will fit into her calculations.

professor_einstein

I couldn’t help but hear that you’re having a little battery problem. I wouldn’t usually poke my nose into other people’s work, except when a colleague has been subjected to this kind of swindling deception.

Berzelius, I’ve been here for a much longer time than you, almost an eternity, and during those two days, I’ve made an important discovery. A strange mineral by the name of kallstone.

Quest completed

______________

An Odd Mineral…

professor_einstein

You understand… Kallstone is an odd material with quite remarkable properties. Even without having been able to take a close examination of some samples, I can see that it seems to have a remarkable capacity for energy storage. It also seems very unstable; the more energy it contains, the more sensitive it is to any kind of impact.

What happens if it’s subjected to external pressure or impact? Well, it explodes! With some considerable power, I might add.

Well well, enough with the explanations. You’ll need to find some kallstones that don’t contain any energy, ones that have been used and discharged. Let’s call it lifeless kallstone.

The lifeless kallstone can be transported without risk and used to build your own battery. Do you understand, Rita? Good, good…

Just keep in mind that when kallstone is fully charged, it’s also fully dangerous. Handle it with care!

Objectives: Talk to Berzelius the Engineer.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: 10 with The Stoneground Expedition

Tell Berzelius what you have learned from Elsa.

berzelius_the_engineer

A kallstone battery… Genius!

Quest completed

______________

A Load of Lifeless Kallstone

berzelius_the_engineer

Rita, you heard what Elsa Einstein said! Look for lifeless kallstone! I’ll look for a suitable container for our very own super battery, while you do that. Good luck!

Objectives: Look for lifeless, discharged kallstone and take it back to Berzelius the Engineer.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 25 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride around the area and pick up all of the lifeless kallstone you can find. When you have enough, return to Berzelius.

berzelius_the_engineer

How much lifeless, discharged kallstone have you found Rita?

Great, this is definitely enough.

Me? Oh, I found this old bag here. Not exactly what I was imagining but I’m sure it’ll work. Positive mental attitude, Rita!

Quest completed

______________

Withstands Hurricanes. and Lightning.

berzelius_the_engineer

So here we go, Rita! Now we’re really starting to get somewhere.

To be able to charge our home-made super battery, we’ll need a lightning rod to conduct the lightning with. I’m not exactly certain what we could use, but I suppose we’ll just have to improvise. Can you see if there’s anything around that’s long, metal, and looks like it can withstand hurricanes? And lightning?

Where would you find something like that? No idea, but use a positive mental attitude, Rita! PMA is A-OK!

Objectives: Look for something that looks suitable as a lightning conductor and take it to Berzelius the Engineer.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 20 with The Stoneground Expedition

Hmm, how do you think a helicopter rotor would work? If it did, I know exactly where to find one!

Ride out to Professor Einstein’s crashed helicopter and retrieve one of the rotors and bring it to Berzelius.

berzelius_the_engineer

Part of a helicopter’s rotor? Hmm! Why not?! I’m sure it’ll work just wonderfully.

Quest completed

______________

Use Your Imagination and a Positive Mental Attitude!

berzelius_the_engineer

We need two wires which can transmit electricity from the lightning rod to the battery. The wires need to be able to withstand strong electrical currents and not just flake out after the first lightning strike. I can see on your face that you’re wondering where you might find something like that, but Rita, I know exactly how you’ll make this work!

Just use your imagination and a positive mental attitude! PMA, Rita! PMA!

Good luck, and head straight back when you’ve found two wires.

Objectives: Find things that could be used as electrical wires to run between a lightning conductor and the kallstone battery. Take whatever you find back to Berzelius the Engineer.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 25 with The Stoneground Expedition

Search around the camp as well as the area surrounding the elevator. I’m sure you will find something of use. Return to Berzelius when you have found what you are looking for.

berzelius_the_engineer

An elevator cable and a washing line?

Hehe, well why not?! I’m sure it’ll work perfectly, I can feel it.

Quest completed

______________

Setting Up Lightning Capture Units

berzelius_the_engineer

Okay, Rita, this is going really well!

The next step is actually incredibly dangerous but I have a feeling that it’ll go just swimmingly. Just use that positive mental attitude and nothing terrible will happen!

Don’t look so worried, Rita! I’ll guide you every step of the way.

Here’s my latest invention: the Lightning Capture Unit. It’s super-easy to capture lightning with. Ride to the lightning-rich spot you found earlier and set the machine up there. It’s really important you put it all together in the right order otherwise it can go really rather horribly wrong. Explosions, blood, death, and all kinds of other awful things we probably wouldn’t enjoy. Haha, away with all that negativity, though! Get rid of those negative thoughts and it’ll be a piece of cake! PMA… You’ll see!

First things first, place the battery on the ground. Then set up the lightning rod, and lastly attach the cables between the battery and the lightning rod. Not so tough, right?

Repeat after me, Rita… Battery, lightning rod, cables. Battery, lightning rod, cables!

Haha, this’ll be like walk in the park, Rita!

Why are there two cables, you ask?

Well what luck you asked!

It’s of the utmost importance that you attach the elevator cable first and the washing line second, otherwise it’s guaranteed to explode. Heehee!

That’s just the way I’ve built the battery, so let’s repeat again:

Battery, lightning rod, elevator cable, washing line. Battery lightning rod, elevator cable, washing line!

When you’ve coupled everything together, it’s just a case of waiting for a thunderstorm. Capture five lightning bolts, then uncouple the cables from the battery. If the battery takes more than five lightning bolts, then it’ll go a teeny, tiny bit wrong. Explosions, blood, death, and all kinds of other awful things we spoke about earlier.

Rita, don’t look so sulky! Positive mental attitude!

Come back when you have a fully-charged battery and we’ll bring the old Frank back to life!

Objectives: Set up the Lightning Capture Unit at the spot you found earlier.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: 5 with The Stoneground Expedition

Ride out to the spot you found for the lightning strikes.

When you reach the spot, place the Lightning Capture Unit on the ground.

self

You’ve successfully assembled the Lightning Capture Unit. Now it’s just a case of plugging everything in.

Quest completed

______________

Setting Up Lightning Capture Unit (Part 2)

self

The Lightning Capture Unit is now set up. Now you just need to plug in the lightning rod, battery, and everything else in the right order.

You repeat again to yourself what Berzelius told you, “battery, lightning rod, elevator cable, washing line…”

Good luck!

Objectives: Set up the lightning capture unit. “Battery, lightning rod, elevator cable, washing line!” Just like Berzelius the Engineer said.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 10 with The Stoneground Expedition

Place the battery on the ground near the unit. Set up the helicopter rotor on top of the stump. Hook up the elevator cable on the ground, then the washing line.

If you are not sure what goes where, you can click on the sparkles and it will tell you which item to use on that spot. Make sure you place each item in the correct spot or you will have to start over.

self

You’ve assembled the Lightning Capture Unit. Now you just need to wait for some horrible weather!

Quest completed

Return to the Lightning Capture Unit tomorrow.
