Day 124, Code Snowdrop! – Spoiler Alert

Meet Jupiter Peacebloom on the hill overlooking Hillcrest. It’s time to attempt a rescue mission!

Code Snowdrop… CODE SNOWDROP!!

jupiter_peacebloom

We’re going to rescue Herman, you say? Who’s Herman?

Meh, doesn’t matter. If it’s Code Snowdrop then there’s no time to waste!

Tell me what’s happened, and give me the short version so we don’t waste any more time.

Okay, I get it. You and Herman rode along the secret pathway over the Greydew Mountains, ended up in GED’s restricted area, Herman was captured by their guards, giving himself up so you could escape.

Sounds like a good guy, I understand why you’d want to save him!

Okay. I don’t know where they’re keeping him prisoner, so we have to work that out first. Follow me and we’ll sneak down to the fence. I know a way into their compound.

Objectives: Meet Jupiter Peacebloom by the gate which leads to GED’s area.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Ride down the hill and speak to Jupiter near the fence.

jupiter_peacebloom

Nobody saw you, right?

Quest completed

______________

The Key to GED

jupiter_peacebloom

I can’t see Herman, can you?

Yep. They must have him locked up farther into the compound. This won’t be easy, the place is crawling with GED guards.

How are we gonna get in? Haha, don’t worry about that. As it happens I have a key with me so we can get in.

Here, take a look…

Haha yep. A proper bolt cutter. There’s nothing it can’t open!

Okay Rita, take the bolt cutters and cut a hole in the fence. I’ll keep a lookout while you’re at it.

Objectives: Cut open a hole in the fence around GED’s compound.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Bolt cutters can cut through solid wood planks. Yep, makes sense to me…

jupiter_peacebloom

It went well, completely silent!

Quest completed

______________

Past the Guards to the Lookout…

jupiter_peacebloom

Okay, we have to find Herman as quickly as we can, but it’s a pretty big compound…

We’ll climb up the side of this building here and see if we can see him from up there. Hmm…

Sounds like a plan, right? I’ll sneak along first, you follow.

What’ll happen if the guards get you? Haha! Don’t worry about that. They don’t know who you are, they’ll just throw you out of the compound.

You’ve seen the huge thick black glasses they all wear, right? You haven’t thought about it?

Haha!!

GED are so nervous that somebody will leak their corporate secrets that they decided all their guards have to wear them. They can’t see more than a few feet in front of them. GED are more worried about their own people than they are about us, which isn’t so strange considering the way they treat their employees. I’m not complaining though, haha!

Come on, follow me!

Objectives: Sneak past GED’s guards and meet Jupiter Peacebloom at the agreed meeting place.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Sneaky, sneaky! Follow the checkpoints to find your way to Jupiter. Avoid the guards, they have their vision boundaries circling around them. Stay out of the boundary to cross the compound undetected. If you are seen, you will be removed from the grounds and have to start the quest over again.

jupiter_peacebloom

Great, nobody seems to have seen us.

Quest completed

______________

Blind Moles and Sandy Beaches

jupiter_peacebloom

I still can’t see Herman anywhere… Still, I think I know where we should go from here. See that tall building over there? The roof is the highest point in the complex so we’ll be able to see everything from up there.

See the building I mean?

Good. We’ll meet at the bottom of it. I’ll sneak over there first, and you follow once the coast is clear.

Remember, even though the guards see worse than blind moles on a sunny, sandy beach, don’t get too close to them. If they catch sight of you, they’ll throw you out in a heartbeat.

Good luck, Rita!

Objectives: Sneak past GED’s guards and meet Jupiter at the agreed spot.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Sneaky, sneaky, again.

jupiter_peacebloom

Great, nobody seems to have seen us so far.

Now we just need to get to the top of this building.

Quest completed

______________

Past the Guards, Up to the Top!

jupiter_peacebloom

Okay. We might be able to see Herman from the roof of the building there. It’s not possible to get any higher up here.

We’ll do just as we did before, I’ll sneak past first and you follow, okay? Good luck!

Objectives: Follow Jupiter and meet him at the top of the building.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Away we go!

Haha! Your plan worked Rita! I can see Herman from here, look…

Quest completed

______________

Sneak After Jupiter Again…

So, now we’ve found Herman, but I’m not too sure how exactly we’ll get him out. Any ideas Rita?

You’re thinking about it? Let me know when you’ve come up with something…

We can’t get him out of here just any old way, so it’s just as well that we get a little closer. We’ll meet down at the bottom of the building, and you can be thinking of a plan on the way down, okay?

Ready? I’ll sneak down first and you follow. As usual. We’re used to this now, huh? Haha!

Objectives: Follow Jupiter down and meet him at the bottom of the building.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Here we go again…

jupiter_peacebloom

Shh… There are guards everywhere, there’s no way to get past them. Maybe we need to give up? Ugh, I hate it when it gets like this, but I think we’re finished here… Grr…

What? You’ve got an idea?

Ugh! I hate this! We’re so close, but we’ll never get there. GED are blocking our ways in!

I should calm down? Okay, okay.

Quest completed

______________

Jupiter’s Diversion

jupiter_peacebloom

I should calm down and listen to your plan? Right, okay, I’m listening…

Hmm… You’ll create a diversion and catch the attention of the guards, then I sneak ahead to Herman and cut open the locks to his cage. Have I got that right?

Hmm… I dunno Rita…

Okay, we’ll give it a shot!

But wait, I’ll make the diversion so you can go save Herman. He knows you; if I show up, he might think it’s one of GED’s dirty tricks.

Here are the bolt cutters. Hope to see you again Rita. I’m off!

Objectives: Talk to Herman. He’s trapped in a cage in GED’s compound.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP

Watch Jupiter run off with the guards trailing behind him, then run up the hill to greet Herman in the sad little prison.

herman

Rita! What are you doing here?

Quest completed

______________

What Happened to Old Hillcrest?

herman

What are you doing here Rita?!

You’re saving me? Cutting open the locks so I can escape?!

Maybe later, but right now you have to listen to me. What I’m about to tell you is more important than my rescue!

I’ve been listening to the guards while they’ve been talking to each other Rita. Just bits of overheard conversations, but I think I’m starting to understand a little bit of what’s happened here in Hillcrest. GED have found something inside the rocks around here Rita, something so valuable that they’ll stop at nothing to get it.

I don’t know what it is, some kind of mineral or special met I think. GED have a codeword for it, they’re calling it Drakonium after Ms Drake.

Nobody seems to know what it can be used for, but GED stand to ruin all their competitors and be the world’s most powerful corporation if they get their hands on it.

It’s because of the Drakonium that they’ve forced out all the residents of Hillcrest and started the mine here. Something happened though as their drills finally got down to the Drakonium… Something terrible…

In the middle of their celebration of finally reaching the Drakonium, a huge and violent explosion was heard deep inside the ground. The earth shook and a mysterious purple mist started to pour out of the mine. It spread all across Hillcrest and lay like a heavy blanket over the top of the rocks. All the GED people tried to escape, but not all of them made it before the mist swept over them. Nobody has heard anything from those who were left, they seemed to get swallowed up by the earth…

It’s no longer possible to see any of Hillcrest through the mist, but sometimes it’s possible to hear sad, desperate cries from below. I’ve heard them myself Rita, and it’s bloodcurdling.

All of Old Hillcrest is now lost, and there’s not a living soul to be found there anymore. The mine they built is closed, and all the staff have fled from the area. Instead of carrying on drilling, they’ve built a huge wall around Hillcrest.

You’ll try to cut open the locks now? Okay, well hurry. I’ve got more to tell you…

Objectives: Cut open the lock to Herman’s cage.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Use the bolt cutters to try and cut open the lock.

herman

It didn’t work? Sigh. Keep trying Rita, and I’ll tell you more while you’re at it.

Quest completed

______________

More Important Than Freedom

herman

Listen now, this is really important.

GED are preparing to take back Hillcrest. It’s why they’ve got so many staff here, and reinforcements are on the way. If I’ve heard correctly, there’s more or less an army on the way here to attack the village and the mine.

I don’t know what’s in there, but it seems as though GED thinks some rival company is making a very aggressive take-over attempt on the mine. They believe the mist is some kind of gas, and that the sounds from the village are just recordings designed to frighten them. I don’t know how they’re thinking, but whatever got out in Hillcrest is something much worse than just a competing corporation, I can tell you. Whatever’s up there isn’t after money. It wants blood…

If GED succeeded in taking back Hillcrest, they’ll reopen the mine and become the most powerful company in the world. Harvest Counties and Jorvik don’t stand much of a chance after that…

Sigh. Rita, you haven’t got time to waste trying to save me anymore, GED’s guards will be along soon and they’ll catch you. You need to get out of here and tell Mrs X everything I just told you, it’s more important than me escaping.

I can tell her myself, you say? You’re going to try cutting the lock open with the bolt cutters again? I’ve always like that you’re such an optimist Rita. Hoho!

Objectives: Cut open the lock to Herman’s cage.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Give the bolt cutters one more try.

herman

It didn’t work?

Quest completed

______________

Herman Disappears Again

herman

You need to tell Mrs X about the Drakonium, tell her about what happened with Hillcrest and GED’s plans to take back the mine! It’s more important than anything else!

You’re going to give the lock one last try? You’ve almost cut through it?

Wait…

What was that?

The crane! They’re lifting me away!

Quick Rita, get out of here! You can’t save me now, but we’ll see each other again, I promise!

Get to Mrs X and save the Harvest Counties!

Never give up the fight!

Objectives: Get up onto Summerblaze.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Bye bye Herman :(

As Herman is lifted away, guards approach to stop you and your horse rushes to your rescue!

horse

Neeeiiigghhhh!!

Summerblaze looks at you with determination. Together you can do this!

Quest completed

______________

Escape From Hillcrest. Again.

horse

Neigh!!

You and Summerblaze are an unbeatable team! Escape the compound!

Objectives: Escape from GED’s compound then talk to Jupiter Peacebloom.

Rewards: 75 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Catch me now, suckers! Viva la Jorvik!!

Escape the compound as you did when you first journeyed to Epona. When you have made it to the other side of the fence, find Jupiter back up on the hill where you first spoke to him.

herman

Rita! You made it…

Where’s Herman?

Sigh.

They moved him before you could get him out…

Quest completed

______________

Back to New Hillcrest

herman

We did our best Rita, but it wasn’t enough. I hate it when this happens!

Sigh.

The only thing we can do now is to report what happened to Mrs X.

You want to come along?

Sorry, but that’s not part of the plan. Only the inner circle of CHILL’s members get to meet her.

Ride back to Sunshine in New Hillcrest. If it was her who sent you here, it might be that she’s got orders from Mrs X about what happens next with you.

Maybe we’ll meet again Rita, but probably not. Friends aren’t something we’ve really got time for in CHILL.

Objectives: Ride to New Hillcrest and talk to Sunshine Joytree.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Mission failed, time to go report back..

sunshine_joytree

La la la…

How did it all go?

Badly? Dum dee dum… The mission was a failure, you say?

La dee da, that’s a shame…

What’s that? You’ve got important information from Herman to give to Mrs X? Humm dee dumm… You didn’t have time to tell Jupiter before he rushed off, you say?

La dee do dee da…

Come back tomorrow Rita… I’ll ask Mrs X if she might be able to meet you after all…

Quest completed

As you ride along, you notice one of the trees start to move toward you…

silencia_tranquila

Were you followed?

Quest completed

No, I shan’t be telling you who I am…

Shh…

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Well, that was… Interesting.

Off we go up the rest of the way to observatory.

jupiter_peacebloom

Hello there Rita!

So, we meet again! I’m still angry at myself for failing down at the compound with Herman. The more I think about it though, the less I think we could’ve done any differently…

Sometimes it’s just not your day.

Quest completed

______________

Key to the Observatory

jupiter_peacebloom

My job here was to make sure it was you and not someone else who came here. Nobody followed you, did they?

Don’t worry, one of our lookouts would’ve noticed if you were followed. The whole way here is under surveillance. Here’s the key to the observatory. Mrs X is waiting for you in there.

Objectives: Unlock the door to Observatory #12 and find Mrs X.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Dismount your horse and use the key on the door. Once inside go up to the top level and you will find Mrs X on the central platform.

mrs_x

Rita. Finally we meet.

I understand you’ve been wanting to meet me which is a fine coincidence, since I’ve been looking forward to meeting you too. I have important things to tell you…

Quest completed

______________

Mrs X

mrs_x

CHILL.

You’ve heard the name, but do you know who we are and what we do?

Exactly, we’re the Harvest Counties’ last hope in the fight against GED, the corporate monsters who want to destroy everything we hold dear.

What’s that? Herman told you to tell me something important?

Tell me everything Rita, spare no detail!

Objectives: Talk to Mrs X again.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Tell Mrs X everything that has happened since coming to Epona.

mrs_x

I see…

Quest completed

______________

A Battle in the Shadows

mrs_x

I need to think about this, Rita, we’ll discuss this more, I promise. Perhaps you’ve got some questions for me?

Who I am?

I wish I could tell you, but our enemies are constantly on the hunt for me, and my identity has to remain secret, even for my closet friends.

What I know about GED’s plans in the Harvest Counties?

We know they’re looking for something underneath Hillcrest, and that they’re prepared to do anything to get to it. Now I understand that this must be the Drakonium Herman was telling you about.

The only thing stopping them from using all their terrible power to reach it is that they’re keeping it quiet so as not to attract the attention of the outside world. If anyone else found out what they’re up to, the whole of Jorvik would be invaded by GED’s competitors. For that same reason, we don’t want any information getting out, so the battle between CHILL and GED has to carry on here in the shadows of the Harvest Counties.

Now it seems as though GED are thinking about ending their undercover work and putting all they’ve got into taking back Harvest Counties and starting to mine Drakonium. This changes everything.

We’re against the clock now Rita. We need to set my master plan into action. Earlier than I’d hoped, but we can’t afford to wait if we want to save the Harvest Counties.

Objectives: Talk to Mrs X again.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Shit is getting real now…

mrs_x

CHILL can’t ever hope to stand up to GED in terms of power, but we can be sharper and smarter than them. The first thing we need to do is try to get hold of more information about what exactly they’ve got planned.

I’d thought Herman could’ve helped us with that, but now we need someone else. Someone clever, brave, and who’s got the right stuff! You maybe understand who I might be talking about here, Rita?

Are you prepared to help CHILL save the Harvest Counties, Rita?

You’ll do it?

Thanks Rita! With your help I think we’ve got a shot at success, but it’s going to take both hard work and a huge amount of luck.

Quest completed

______________

A Plan for Finding Out the Enemy’s Plan

mrs_x

That the plan is kept secret for as long as possible is of huge importance, so I can’t tell you any details right now, but I’ve prepared an operation to be carried out by CHILL’s leading agents.

Let’s go downstairs so I can tell you more about the plan. I’ll meet you one floor down.

Objectives: Go downstairs one floor in the observatory and talk to Mrs X again.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

So, what’s the plan, ma’am?

mrs_x

So Rita, I want you to meet the other members of the group: Jupiter Peacebloom, Silencia Tranquila, and Syntax.

Together you’ll take part in CHILL’s most dangerous operation yet: Operation Summer Rain.

Talk to the others and get to know them a little. You’ll need to be able to trust each other one hundred percent if you’re going to succeed.

Quest completed

______________

Silencia Tranquila: A Flash of a Shadow…

silencia_tranquila

If Mrs X trusts you, I trust you. End of story.

Like I said…

Objectives: Talk to Mrs X again.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

You don’t talk much. I like that.

mrs_x

Silencia Tranquila: master of disguise, unbeaten Jorvegian champion of hide ‘n’ seek, smoother than Smoothie McSmootherson from the Planet Smooth celebrating International Smooth Day by drinking a smoothie. She’s pretty smooth.

Not much of a talker, but with her in the group you can be sure that no GED guards will spot you in a hurry.

Quest competed

______________

Syntax Silverstream: Jorvik’s Best Hacker

syntax

Umm… Hello. We haven’t met before but I’m Syntax. You seem very brave, which is pretty cool because bravery isn’t really my thing to be honest.

Heh.

You don’t need to worry though! As long as nothing especially dangerous is happening you can trust me one hundred percent!

Umm… Okay, err, that might have sounded weird… I’d never betray CHILL, not even if Ms Drake was right here in front of me threatening to pinch me really hard…

Objectives: Talk to Mrs X.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

No team is complete without a token weak hipster computer nerd!

mrs_x

Syntax Silverstream: CHILL’s computer expert. There’s no system he can’t hack, and no lock he can’t pick. He might give the impression of being a little cowardly, but he’s got a lion heart. He just hasn’t figured it out yet.

Quest completed

______________

Jupiter Peacebloom CHILL’s Tough Guy

jupiter_peacebloom

Hey again. Seems as though Mrs X really trusts you Rita. I’ve never seen anyone get into CHILL’s inner circle this fast. Not that I’m against it, I mean, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather go in against GED with! Haha!

Objectives: Talk to Mrs X again.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Yes, we are already acquainted.

mrs_x

Jupiter Peacebloom: loyal, brave and incredibly strong. Lived half his life in the wilderness, a spy of unbeatable excellence, and one of Jorvik’s leading wrestlers.

With him in the group, you can be sure that no GED guards will get hold of you in a hurry.

Quest completed

______________

Preparations Before the Plan Begins

mrs_x

So now you’ve got to meet your companions. You’re an incredibly effective group where all of you complement each other very well. But there’s no time to waste. We need to get to work immediately.

I’ve had intelligence that an old friend of mine has found blueprints to GED’s HQ in Jarlaheim. As it happens, this old friend of mine has vouched for your good character, otherwise I’d never have agreed to meet you. Can you guess who I mean?

Exactly, Gunther. One of the world’s leading secret agents.

I want you to go to him and get the blueprints for me. You know the terrain well and can ride faster than anyone else I know. Hurry there and hurry back. You need to travel alone, since your colleagues here have got other preparations to be getting on with. Good luck.

Objectives: Talk to Gunther in his cabin outside Firgrove.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

It all makes sense now!

Ride or transport how you wish to visit the German tourists in the house you helped them get from Mr Kembell.

gunther

Ah, wunderschon! How lovely to see you again. What good news to hear that you’ve grouped together with Mrs X, a splendid colleague to have. Ahh, those were the days, Mrs X and I breaking into Fort Knox to put a stop to that villain Silverthumb…

But she wants the blueprints of GED’s head office in Jarlaheim, you say?

Quest completed

______________

USB Drive on the Loose

gunther

Oh, I found the blueprints in our cabin when we were clearing out after the previous owners. The drawings were on a USB drive, hidden under a floorboard. It’s encrypted and I haven’t really kept up to date with how to crack encryption in the last few years, so I’m afraid I’m unable to help you. I’m on vacation, after all.

How would we be able to access the files? I don’t know Rita, do you know someone who might be able to help?

Syntax? I’ve heard of that kid.

He’s good. Very good. Apparently the best in Jorvik!

He’d probably be able to get into the drive in about three months…

You need the blueprints right now? Oh dear. That’s not great, I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help Rita…

Wait a second! I’ve got an idea!

Gretchen is distance-schooled and I seem to remember she’s in need of a project right now. She’s a little behind in Spy Mathematics B, but her teacher says that if she can show a little extra initiative, she might get a better grade. She loves encryption and codes, it sounds like it could be perfect for her!

The USB drive, hmm… It must be up in the old box amongst all the other junk we cleared up. Take a look and see if you can find it then come back and talk to me.

Objectives: Find the USB drive in the old box, then return to Gretchen.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Ride up the hill to the old barn and go inside to retrieve the USB drive. Then return to Gunther.

gunther

Ah, nice work. This is the USB drive we were looking for.

Quest completed

Supercrypto, a Perfect School Project!

Bit dusty, but it should still work. Take the USB drive to Gretchen, it’ll be a perfect school project for her.

Objectives: Give Gretchen the USB drive.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Gretchen is standing up on the front porch, next to the computer. Who keeps their computer on the front porch, anyway??

gretchen

Hey there Rita! I’m just doing some homework here. Pretty boring… Right now I’m studying advanced arctic survival without equipment.

It’s for kids, after all…

Quest completed

______________

A Challenge Fit for a Spy Student

gretchen

You’ve got an encrypted USB drive? Dad said it’d be a good school project for me?

Sigh… Encryption is so boring, never a challenge, but yeah, why not. We’re friends after all, so I’ll help you out. Lemme see the drive. Thanks, I’ll shove it in the computer and we’ll see what we’re dealing with.

WOAH! This is encrypted with the latest methods! RSA-2049!! Coooool!!

This might take a while, but I’ll crack it. This’ll be fun!

Need more energy to be doing this though. Grab me a JorCola, I’m gonna crack this!!

Objectives: Fetch some JorCola to Gretchen so she’ll have the energy to crack the encryption on the USB drive.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Go behind the house and open the fridge. Pick up a couple cans of cola, then return to Gretchen. Repeat this a few more times until you have brought her all of the cans from the fridge. This is some serious code…

gretchen

That was way too easy… Still kinda fun though.

Quest completed

______________

School Project: Done!

gretchen

Okay, I’ll write a report about this and hand it in to school. Here’s your USB drive, all unencrypted and ready to go. Seeya soon!

Say hey to dad before you leave, otherwise there’s a chance he’ll forget to turn off the sensors on the minefield.

Bye!

Objectives: Talk to Gunther.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Tell Gunther that Gretchen cracked the USB drive.

gunther

Did Gretchen managed to get the USB unencryptyed for you? Good, now I just need to make sure she writes her school report instead of watching Jorvik’s Got Talent.

Quest completed

______________

Back to Mrs X with the USB

gunther

Here’s the USB drive Rita, unencrypted and ready to go. Hope the blueprints are able to help you and Mrs X in the fight against GED! Say hello to her from me and Helga when you see her!

Auf Widershen Rita!

Objectives: Give the USB drive to Mrs X.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Return to Observatory #12 in Epona, and bring the USB to Mrs X.

mrs_x

How did it go in Firgrove, Rita? You got the drawings? Great. That’s one thing at least that’s gone according to plan so far. What do I mean by that?

Sigh. There’s been a hiccup in the others’ preparations, I just don’t know why everything had to start going wrong just when we’re about to complete our most important plan ever.

Hey all! This one’s gonna be short and quick today.

I love the community that we have here and have always wanted to foster it more to allow decent conversations and a possible place to have game chat without the overbearing chat filter. I tried a message board forum a year or so back and it didn’t work quite as well as I had planned. But now I have another idea and I thought I would introduce it to you all and see what you thought.

Recently a couple friends of mine introduced me to Telegram. It is an instant messenger app for mobile and computer. It’s really fun to use and a very secure system. You can individual chats or group chats as well. My thought was to create an SSO group chat for everyone. And with my art skills, there may be some custom stickers involved. ;)

If you already use Telegram, add me! My name is Griffel.

If you don’t know Telegram, you can check it out here! Telegram.org

I’ve been using it fairly steadily on mobile for several weeks now and haven’t noticed any significant increase in data usage. It’s quite minimal on the amount of storage on my device, and it’s really fun to use.

I would love to know what you all think! I look forward to having some great community interactions outside the blog.

Hope you all have a great day, and happy riding!

Hello all!

I want to make a quick post to introduce two new writers to the blog: Sara and Amanda!

Both are avid Star Stable fans and horse lovers. Sara is completely new to the blog and Amanda was a writer returning from a long hiatus.

Get ready for mystery, adventure, and of course, horses!

Writer positions are always open, but only dedicated writers please. I know many of you are interested writing, yet no one so far has maintained an active position. I have had more than 20 different writers over the past 3 years and not one single finished story. Disappointing, right? If you think you can change that horrible track record, shoot me an email with a synopsis of your story and a short sample of your writing!

A black figure stood silently in the shadow of a large tree, her back pressed up against the icy wall. The darkness of the night mixed in with the shadows hide her nicely. She kept both her ears open, one for any by-passers, and the other for any voices from inside the locked gate beside her. The dark figure had overheard gossip that a new girl was coming to Moorland Stables late at night, and therefore she had to investigate by order.

A sudden sound of hooves clopping on the cold ground caught the figure’s attention. She knew it was likely she wouldn’t get seen, since the moon was hidden behind the clouds and the stars couldn’t produce enough light, but the figure pulled the hood of her crimson-shaded cloak over her pale face and slid closer to the ground. The by-passer cantered quietly by the oak tree without any knowledge of what was in its shadow. The figure knew she to get the information and get out of the area as soon as possible, so she cupped her left ear on the wall.

Abrupt banging coming from her far right made the figure jump. She must have not heard the van dropping off someone at the front gate. It was much to far to hear any voices, but the figure knew it had to be the new girl arriving at the stables.

“Justin, I think she’s here,” a female voice called out. She recognized it as Emilie, one of the many stable girls. The figure let out an unintentional gasp, she had forgotten how close Emilie stayed by the gates. Apparently Emilie had heard her since she peaked her head outside the gates.

“Hello?” Emilie shouted. The figure covered her mouth and sank back down the wall all while silently scolding herself. Just when I had the chance… she thought in a defeated manner. Miraculously, Emilie went back to her position and the figure didn’t end up getting caught. She wiped sweat off her brow, never had she been so thankful the gate was shut. If she failed this mission, Dark Core would have her head for sure.

With her ear back on the wall, she listened the best she could. By now she was certain the new girl was in there speaking to Justin. It took some time but after hearing vague mumbling the figure caught what she needed to hear.

“Welcome to Jorvik, I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time here,” Justin’s voice projected through the wall.

“I doubt it.”

Her voice… The figure had to take a step back to comprehend what she just heard. The girl’s voice was smooth and flowing like a waterfall, crisp like a summer breeze, and pure like the Soulrider’s themselves. It was her! Pure excitement ran through her veins. It had to be her, it just had to be!

“Thanks anyway,” the girl said. There it was again, her voice. That was all the figure needed to know that she’s the fifth one. The figure then paused, a wicked smile highlighting her features.

“Darko’s going to be very pleased…” She whispered. With a feeling of triumph still lingering, she raced off into the night, her dainty lips still holding that cruel smile.

Secrets In The Sand – Prolouge

Secrets in the Sand

Prolouge

There was only one possible obstacle left that could detour her otherwise flawless arrival to the island. The four hour flight had been smooth and uneventful, the cab had arrived safely at the docks from the airport and now Olivia awaited the ferry to return so she could board. As long as it didn’t sink on the way back with her aboard, then she would be left with no choice but to complete her unwanted move to the island.

Only two small duffels sat at her feet as she waited impatiently alone on a bench outside the tiny station. The air was salty from the mass of ocean water around her, and she could already feel her dark hair begin to friz. She was aware that her cell phone had vibrated in her jeans pocket several times since she sat down, but made no effort to look. For now, she wanted no reminder of who or what she was leaving behind.

Too soon, the small ferry returned and minutes later, Olivia was on her way to the island. The same island she and her family had spent every summer on until she was thirteen. It was the same island where she had learned all of her favorites things, from riding a bike to swimming in the ocean and even riding horseback on the beach. They were all happy memories. Until a fateful day in August changed everything and marked the abrupt and brutal end of her carefree, happy childhood.

A shiver rocked through her, snapping her focus back to the smooth boat beneath her. She didn’t want to think about the past anymore. She wanted to be able to look ahead and see a future with moments like those again, but it didn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon.

Distracting herself with trivial thoughts and watching the static water ripple from the ferry, time still passed slowly, yet she arrived at the small harbor much too soon. She ignored the other three people around her as they carried their luggage from the station, officially on the island.

The moment her piercing green eyes caught the large, carved sign over the entrance from the ferry that was much too familiar, Olivia felt her stomach twist.

Welcome to Skasrik Cove. Pop. 387.’

I see this place is just as popular as ever, Olivia thought to herself. From the second she had seen the sign that she had seen hundreds of times before, she felt numb. A thousand sweeping memories, both good and haunting, threatened to flood her, but she kept them at bay.

It had been four years since she had stepped foot on island sand. She took a moment to gaze across the land spread out before her. The sand, the dunes, the beaches, the forests. It was exactly the way she always remembered it.

There was a time when she never wanted to leave. Now all she wanted to do was turn and run as far away as she could get. She used to think that she could outrun her memories, but it didn’t take long before they caught up to her and dragged her right back to where it all began.

Standing on the pier of Skasrik Cove. The only thing that’s visibly changed is the welcome sign.

Because the last time she was here it read:

‘Welcome to Skasrik Cove. Pop. 389.’

As you ride through New Hillcrest, a young woman stops and asks for your help.

Robbed and Abandoned in Mirror Marshes!

frida_greenhill

Please! Wait!

Please could you help me find my friend Isabel? She was in Crescent Moon Village to pick up a delivery of Jorvikroot and she should’ve been back yesterday.

I’ve been looking for her like crazy but she could be anywhere along the way and the area is so big that I just cannot cover it all by myself.

Please, please would you consider helping me find her?

That’s so kind of you, thank you so much! I really do need all the help I can get!

Ever since the bridge to Old Ridgecaster broke, we’ve always taken the route through the Mirror Marshes to get to Crescent Moon Village. If you look down in the Mirror Marshes, I’ll carry on looking up here around New Hillcrest.

Objectives: Look for Isabel in the Mirror Marshes down below New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Follow the road through the marsh until you find a toppled over wagon with a woman stuck underneath.

OWW! My whole body hurts.

What luck that you found me. I don’t know how much longer I could’ve coped with the pain under there.

Thanks for helping…

Quest completed

______________

Bring Isabel to New Hillcrest

isabel_stonefield

Ouch, ouch, ouch! Owww!

You really did just save my life. How can I ever thank you?

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Isabel and I live up in New Hillcrest.

Hmm…

How I got here?

Where’s Atlas?! My poor horse!

And where’s all my Jorvikroot that was in the cart?!

Wait a second! Now my memory is coming back a little…

We came from Crescent Moon Village which is where I usually sell the clothes I make by hand. While we’re there, I usually shop around for food and other bits and pieces that you can’t get up in New Hillcrest. This time I got hold of loads of Jorvikroot which is usually unbelievably hard to find. I bought all they had, then we rode through the Mirror Marshes on the way home…

The mist was so thick that morning that we couldn’t even see that a woman suddenly jumped out in front of us. Atlas was scared and he broke off from the cart, causing me to go flying but somehow getting stuck by my sweater to the side. Then the cart tipped over me and I saw the woman getting away with my valuable Jorvikroot.

Ouch, my back is killing me…

I suppose I can fix up the cart and everything another time, because now I just want to get home. How am I going to do that without Atlas?

You’ll take me home?

That’s so kind! I live in a row of houses up in New Hillcrest.

Objectives: Take Isabel home to New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Get back on your horse and ride to Isabel’s house in New Hillcrest.

isabel_stonefield

Thanks for all your help. It sure feels nice to be home again.

Quest completed

______________

Isabel’s Missing Horse

isabel_stonefield

I wonder where Atlas has got to now…

My lovely horse…

He ran away when that woman frightened him. She came from absolutely nowhere and Atlas is easily spooked when something unexpected happens. I should go out looking for him but I can’t when I’m in this amount of pain…

Would you maybe consider going to look for Atlas? You’re so very thoughtful, thank you!

I really hope you find him. He’s the apple of my eye! There’s a chance he ran home to his stable just outside New Hillcrest. Maybe you could ask Nathalie if she’s seen Atlas?

Objectives: Ask Nathalie Moonriver at the New Hillcrest stables if she happens to know where Atlas is.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Maybe she has seen the poor horse?

nathalie_moonriver

Hey Rita!

Yeah, I’ve seen Atlas!

Quest completed

______________

Searching for Atlas

nathalie_moonriver

I was up in the main square in New Hillcrest to buy some breakfast when Atlas came racing past, quick as a flash. I tried to ride after him to catch up but he was too fast.

He looked completely terrified. He ran towards the bridge to Old Ridgecaster. If you ride out that way, you might find him.

Objectives: Look for Isabel’s horse in Old Ridgecaster.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 20 with Crescent Moon Village

Ride up to Old Ridgecaster bridge and you’ll find that Scott Buttergood has gotten hold of Atlas.

scott_buttergood

Hey Rita.

I haven’t got time right now.

I’m busy.

Quest completed

______________

Scott Buttergood and Isabel’s Horse

scott_buttergood

What? You’ve got something to do with that idiot horse?

That maniac horse came racing like a mad thing towards the bridge and of course I tried to stop it. I couldn’t get any contact with it until it was too late. He took a huge leap over the gap in the bridge but missed the landing and crashed straight through the planks he landed on. The only thing stopping him from falling down into the abyss was his saddle and his head which both got stuck in the bridge.

It took four men to get that dumb beast back up on the road again.

Now I’m a good few days behind on my work because of that darned horse.

What? You seriously mean I should just hand the horse over without a word?

No chance!

I hear what you’re saying, of course I understand that it’s somebody else’s horse, but if she wants it back, she can compensate me for the damage it’s caused. Until then, I’ll be keeping him here.

You’re wondering if there’s anything you can do to get the horse back?

Maybe. I’ll think about it for a while, but in the meantime you can fetch my tools. I need them to put all this mess right again. They’re in front of the house down there, the one on the left on the other side of the bridge.

Objectives: Find Scott’s tools that he needs to repairing the bridge. They’re outside the house a short trot away from where Scott is standing.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: 10 with Crescent Moon Village

The house is on the lower terrace from the bridge. Go down towards Crescent Moon Village, then turn left to find the house at the end of the short trail. Return to Scott with his tool box.

scott_buttergood

Good job on finding them.

Quest completed

______________

Beat Scott in the Race!

scott_buttergood

Great that you came with the tools. Now I can repair the damage that horse did.

I’ve thought a little about what you could do to get that horse back for when you leave here, and there’s only one way to resolve this…

The same way all us Buttergoods solve our issues when we argue…

We compete for it.

You need to beat me in a race to get the horse back. If you lose, I keep him.

Challenge accepted?

Right then. Let’s go!

Objectives: Get Scott to give back Isabel’s horse by beating him in a race.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP, 80 Horse XP

Reputation: 15 with Crescent Moon Village

This race may be difficult to complete on the first try. Scott is pretty fast but he doesn’t jump, so get ahead of him by jumping over the hay bale obstacles.

scott_buttergood

You won but don’t think it’s because you’re better than I am!

I’m a man of my word, so here’s your friend’s horse back. Now get out of here!

Quest completed

It’s probably best I get you back to Isabel.

(You start to lead Atlas back to Isabel in New Hillcrest.)

Objectives: Return to New Hillcrest with Isabel’s horse.

Ride alongside Atlas until he finds his way home.

isabel_stonefield

Thank you Rita! You found Atlas! I started to wonder whether I’d ever see him again. I’m so eternally grateful! Thank you!

Take this dress as a thank you for helping. It’s one of the very finest dresses in my collection. It’s the least I can do since you came back with the apple of my eye!

Who Stole Isabel’s Jorvikroot

isabel_stonefield

Ouch! My back is so sore!

Who was that woman who stole all my expensive Jorvikroot?

I remember how she stared me right in the eyes while I was laying helpless under the cart.

She had a real sadness in her eyes…

It felt like I knew her…

Now I know who it is!

It’s the baker’s daughter from here in New Hillcrest! I know her name is Lisa and we don’t know each other well, but why would she do something so horrible to me?

Oh I don’t know, I can’t deal with this. I can’t confront her right now in any case. There’s too much going on all at once.

You say you’ll confront her about it, Rita?

Thanks ever so much! She lives in a pretty big house out towards the edge of town, next to the square.

Good luck! Come back and let me know how it went…

Objectives: Try to discover who’s responsible for stealing the Jorvikroot in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Lisa’s house is the last on the right before you go down the hill to the stable. She can be found near the back door behind the house.

lisa_rockwell

Who are you?

Quest completed

______________

Why Steal Jorvikroot?

lisa_rockwell

Yes, I’m the baker’s daughter. Lisa is my name.

How can I help you?

What?

How can you be sure it was me who scared Isabel in the Mirror Marshes?

She recognized me?

Oh no, what have I done?!

It really wasn’t my intention to hurt her. Is she okay?

No, I really can’t give back the Jorvikroot… It’s to do with my husband Thomas and his life. I’ll explain.

A few weeks ago, Thomas was off on a business trip somewhere past Cauldron Swamp through the Iron Gate, to deliver exotic herbs to Pi the witch. On his way out of there, he fell into the swamp, which is where Pi the witch dumps all her poisonous, toxic waste without a second thought for the environment or the swamp’s animal life. Now Thomas has all that poison in his body!

Objectives: Find out why Lisa stole the Jorvikroot from Isabel.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Interesting, interesting…

lisa_rockwell

I really need to help my husband, otherwise I’ll lose him forever.

Quest completed

______________

Thomas’ Destiny

lisa_rockwell

No, please! Listen!

I need to keep the Jorvikroot because it’s the only cure for the poison that’s making Thomas so sick. His life is in the balance here, you have to believe me…

If he doesn’t eat the Jorvikroot, the poisons will take over his entire body. It’ll turn him into a man with no soul, an empty being that you can’t get close to. Not even me or our son Edward.

I’ve tried giving him the Jorvikroot but the poison has already started to take over and stop him from eating the cure. I don’t know what I’m going to do…

Sniffle…

Thomas won’t dare to even be around anyone other than me anymore. He’s afraid that he’ll hurt someone or injure them because he doesn’t recognize his own feelings anymore. He’s even told me to keep Edward away.

Sniffle… Sniff…

He comes here every night, so I can see how the poison is slowly changing his appearance. His cheeks have become hollow and his skin is so pale.

One night, I was brave enough to kiss him goodbye. He kissed me back and since then we’ve always parted with a goodbye kiss. For that one moment at least, we’re happy.

Objectives: Listen to Lisa as she tells you the awful story of her husband.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

That’s a sad story, but did you really have to steal?

lisa_rockwell

What am I going to do?

Quest completed

______________

A Horse in Need of Care

lisa_rockwell

I know I’ve done wrong but how can I make everything right again?

All of this has made me so unbelievably tired that I don’t have the energy to take care of anything else right now. Least of all the things Thomas used to do at home when he was healthy.

But, Rocky…

How can I have been so stupid as to forget Rocky?!

Rocky is Thomas’ horse and best friend. Rocky’s more like a member of the family than a horse for Thomas. He needs to be taken care of right away.

How could I forget?

What? You’d take care of Rocky for me Rita? Really?

That’s the nicest thing anybody’s done for me in a long time, thank you so much.

My best friend Nathalie is down at the New Hillcrest stables and she’ll show you where Rocky is.

It’s fine if you want to tell Nathalie what’s happened to Thomas.

Objectives: Ride down to the stable in New Hillcrest and talk to Nathalie. She can tell you which horse belongs to Thomas.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Hey Rita, you want to take care of Thomas’ horse, you say?

Taking Care of Rocky

nathalie_moonriver

What is it you’re even saying?

Thomas has been poisoned? How serious is it?

Oh no! Now I understand why Lisa hasn’t been answering my messages.

Poor Lisa…

Where Rocky is?

I’ve given him food so that he doesn’t go hungry, but I’m more worried about how he’s feeling in his mind. He’s a horse who really loves company and loves being made a fuss of, but I just haven’t had time to give him that kind of attention. I have too many other horses to look after.

Maybe that’s why he’s been so worried and restless at night. He’s been whinnying a lot at night but most of the time it calms down after a little while so I haven’t been worried until now.

It’s really nice of you to come down and give him a little love. Here’s Thomas’ brush that you can groom Rocky with.

Rocky’s in the pasture behind the stable.

Objectives: Groom Rocky, who you’ll find in the pasture behind the stables.

Why Did Thomas Drink the Water?

lisa_rockwell

Thank you Rita for taking care of Rocky.

I can’t actually believe I forgot about him like that.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Thomas has been to see Rocky before he comes home in the evenings because I can smell the stables on him…

I miss the old Thomas so much, we had so much fun together…

Sniffle…

If only we wasn’t tricked into that swamp!

Yeah, it’s not his fault he is how he is. It was one of those evil little Will-o-the-wisps that cast a spell on him and dragged him down into the swamp.

Your parents must’ve read you the tales of Will-o-the-wisp’s spells and curses when you were little?

They didn’t?

My parents did but I never believed the stories were true. Until now.

The tales tell of how people become hypnotized by little lights on the water and then are tricked into heading down into the swamps and bogs. There, they’re kept prisoner against their will for all eternity so that the evil little Will-o-the-wisps can feed off their good-heartedness. Thomas described the hypnosis as though he was sleeping but somehow still aware of everything around him.

Imagine what that must have been like for my poor Thomas to have gone through that for real!

How did he break the spell?

It broke when he was on his way down into the swamp. He slipped on a wet stone that was sticking up through the water and hit his head. In the very same moment, the hypnosis broke so that he gasped and swallowed the toxic water.

What have we done to deserve this?

Objectives: Lisa explains how Thomas came to drink the swamp water.

Rewards: 10 with Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

What a sad tale indeed.

lisa_rockwell

If I only knew where he was during the day so that we could try to fix this together…

Where Did the Family Photo Go?

lisa_rockwell

Bad luck has been after us ever since Thomas was poisoned.

Just a couple of days ago, I noticed that our family portrait has disappeared. I’ve looked all over the whole house, but it’s gone.

Thomas swore that it wasn’t him who took it, so did Edward, and I believe them both.

You can absolutely have a look for it if you want. That photo means everything to me.

Have a look around the house to begin with. Perhaps it’s managed to find it’s way outside somehow?

Objectives: Find the family photo.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Search around the house and ask Edward if he knows anything about the photo’s whereabouts.

Edward Took It After All!

Can’t you just get lost?

I can speak to you however I like, you’re not my dad.

Pff.

Why are you looking for our family photo?

Okay, okay, I didn’t know my mother cared so much about that picture.

Why did I take it?

I took it because me and dad always went camping at the place on the picture. We always had so much fun together when we went there.

The bunker on the picture was our secret hideout, and we were the only ones who knew about it. Now he’s gone so I’ll never get to go there with him again.

That’s why I took the stupid photo!

If my mom really wants it back, then I suppose you can give it back to her yourself. I don’t want her to be mad at me.

The photo is in a box in the middle of the sunflower patch on the other side of the house.

Objectives: Look for the family photo and give it back to Lisa who’s waiting at the rear side of her house in New Hillcrest.

A Meaningful Place

lisa_rockwell

Was it Edward who took the picture?

Then that means he lied to me. We taught him better than that!

I understand why he took it though. He doesn’t need to worry that I’ll be angry with him, it’s fine.

What’s happening to his dad is really hitting Edward hard. He seems to have changed…

My little Edward…

The bunker on the picture was a very special place for them both. They’ve had so much fun there. Hey, perhaps you’re right! Maybe Thomas is at the bunker during the day so that he gets to avoid bothering people…

Hmm? You’ll ride to the bunker, Rita? Fantastic! Go as fast as you can and see if he’s there. We need to get him to eat the Jorvikroot.

Take the photo with you and show Thomas what he stands to lose if he doesn’t come back and eat the Jorvikroot.

The bunker is on the Shipwreck Shores, a little bit outside Crescent Moon Village.

Be careful!

And, please hurry…

If I could maybe just find something to eat. I haven’t had a proper meal in days.

When Edward and I used to come camping here, we always stopped by my friend Pamela’s place in Crescent Moon Village. She always used to make us the best meatballs in the whole world. It was Edward’s favorite thing to eat.

Hmm? You’d ride over and get some for me? Oh wow, Rita, that’s so nice! Ride to Crescent Moon Village and ask Pamela if she’d make her old friend a portion of meatballs…

Well how about that, you also know the Rockwells?

Edward and Thomas always stop by and say hello when they’re camping in this neck of the woods!

Of course I can make some meatballs for Thomas, but I’m all out of onions.

I’ve ordered some from the village greengrocer but I haven’t had time to pick them up yet.

Oh! How lovely of you to offer to pick them up for me, Rita! Ride to the greengrocer which is just a little bit before the water mill you can see from here. They always leave the orders on a bench just outside, so you can easily pick it up whenever you want.

Objectives: Go to the greengrocers and pick up the crate of onions, then return to Pamela.

FINALLY!

Stay away until I’ve had my food. I need the energy to be able to even try fighting the poison.

Chompchompchomp…

Wow, this is delicious!

Omnomnomnom…

That hit the spot! Now I feel a little better at least.

Edward wouldn’t have wanted to miss this. He always thought it was so exciting to explore all the corridors and rooms of the bunker. We always had a picnic right here and it was always Pamela’s delicious meatballs.

It feels really nice to think about the things Edward and I used to do together. I wonder if I’ll ever get to do any of this with Edward again?

Usually, we’d come camping at this time of year. I promised him we’d do it every year, but it feels like this is the first time I’ll be breaking a promise to him. This has to be really hard for him…

Ouch! Ow ow ow!

The poison is trying to tear away my good memories.

Thanks so much for the food, but it’s probably best you go now. Don’t come back.

Aaaaaarrrrggghhhhh…!!

Take care of my family, they’ll need all the help they can get…

Prologue

‘You have to run Justin. They’re going to come for you’ I whisper

‘I know Ad but I have to let it happen. It’s my destiny’

A tall dark haired boy, around 16, stands in front of me.

‘Well,’ I say reluctantly. ‘Stay safe’

‘You too’

He surprises me by pressing his lips against mine. I smile and look up at him.

‘What was that for?’ I say

‘Just because’ he grins.

‘Well thank you’

I hug Justin and he holds me tight. In that moment I feel safe and protected. I never want that moment to end. Then I let go and the moment passes. I look at him, etching his dark brown eyes and his black hair into my memory just incase this is the last time I’ll see him.

Then, with a wave I mount Mystery, my pure blood friesian. I cluck gently and he breaks into a smooth gallop, up the path. I turn back and see Justin standing, slowly growing smaller and smaller. When I can’t see him anymore I turn my attention back to my riding.

‘Good boy’ I praise as Mystery crosses the bridge that always used to make him spook. I ride as one with Mystery, part human, part horse.

‘Hey Edd’ I call to the stoutly built man who manages the Inn by the Bridge.

I pull up Mystery and he snorts, impatient to get running again. Edd waves and walks over to me.

‘Hello Adele’

He discreetly hands me a slip of paper. I smile gratefully at him, knowing how dangerous his job is.

‘Catch you around’ he says, before walking away.

I gently squeeze Mystery and he canters down the path. Once I’m sure that nobody is around I unfold the paper.

Secret Lookout. Observe E.

Four words. I toss the paper to the wind. Careless. I would pay for that mistake later.

As soon as I reach the Secret Lookout, I stare at the mass of land before me. I get out my binoculars and focus on the building. Just as I’d thought. They were up to something for sure. But what?

Suddenly the wind shifts and I tense. Something is wrong. Very wrong.

I turn Mystery around, ready to flee. But he rears up, terrified and scared. With a piercing scream I fall from the saddle. Quickly scrambling to my feet I gasp at what lies before me. A figure dressed completely in red with swirling eyes that made me feel dizzy just thinking about them, is holding onto Mystery’s reins. Mystery is terrified and his cries touch my heart. As I run towards my horse, something heavy and grey slams into me. I cry out desperately, seeking help when there is none. I manage to get back to my feet only to stagger backwards. But I have forgotten about the cliff behind me. My foot slips and my heart lurches. My pounding heart sounds like a drum, loud and relentless. Desperately trying to keep my balance, I whirl my arms like a windmill. Then, I fall with the sound of Mystery’s desperate cries and an evil laugh echoing through my head. Then everything turns black.

Oh, look, a text from James.

Come Quickly! EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

phone

DISASTER! GET HERE QUICK!!

WHY ARE YOU STILL READING?! EMERGENCY! HURRY!!!!!

Objectives: Ride to Fort Pinta and talk to James.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Has the fort come crashing down??

james

Why did it take you so long to get here? It’s all falling apart here — or at least it’s the beginning of the end for my business — and you just waltz in slower than a sloth!

No tips for you Rita.

Quest completed

______________

The South Hoof Lighthouse Goes Dark…

james

Nightmare, Rita You’ve gotta help me!

What’s happened, you ask?

The lighthouse on the South Hoof Peninsula has gone out! It’s a complete disaster! No tourist ships dare come close to Fort Pinta if the lighthouse isn’t there to guide them, and if there are no tourists then I don’t make money! This is so dreadful for me…

If I shouldn’t just call the lighthouse keeper and ask what’s going on? Do you think I’m stupid? Of course I’ve done that already. I’ve called loads of times but there’s no answer. Something must’ve happened.

You’ll help me though, right Rita? You will?! Sweet!

I’ve had an idea. A while back, I bought a pair of really nice, cozy little boats that I thought about hiring out to the tourists. For some reason though, nobody’s ever hired them out which I think is weird because going out on a boat is super fun! So I’ve been told. But anyway, you can borrow one so you can sail over to South Hoof. What do you think Rita?

Why I don’t just go myself?

Umm, I’m… Umm… Allergic to water. Exactly, yeah. That’s it. So unfortunately I can’t go. The boat is down there between the pier and the beach. Good luck!

Objectives: Ride down to James’ boat which is moored to a jetty between the pier and the beach.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Well, this boat isn’t exactly sea-worthy… Return to James to report the boat’s condition.

james

Have you already been to South Hoof? You haven’t?!

The boat was broken, you say? That’s ridiculous! I paid TEN Jorvik Shillings each for those boats. Maybe there’s a hole or two in the bottom, but they’re just there to keep you cool while you’re out on the water. Like air conditioning in a car.

Why do you look so suspicious, Rita?

Quest completed

______________

Another Boat to Borrow

james

Okay, okay. The boat might not be in top condition, but I have another. I rented it out to the Guard at the disco, so he could practice landing maneuvers at the beach or something. You can go and ask him if you can borrow that one instead?

Objectives: Ask the Guard at the disco if you can borrow his boat.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Let’s hope this boat is in better shape…

security

ATTENTION!

Rita, how can I be of assistance to you on this day?

Quest completed

______________

Operation Iron Cockroach

security

WHAT ON EARTH?! You want to borrow a boat from me?

Aha! You mean the landing craft I borrowed in order to rehearse crucial beach storming maneuvers? Operation Iron Cockroach as I call it…

Grrr… There’s not much boat to borrow unfortunately. My beach landing rehearsals became a little too realistic, even for me.

No time to waste though, I realize you’re on an important mission Rita! So I hereby submit my report of Operation Iron Cockroach: The time was 04:07 yesterday morning as I was out at sea off Fort Pinta carefully and silently approaching the beach. Just next to the diving board I saw a guard post! The element of surprise was lost and my position uncovered, so I went full speed ahead to get to the shore before the enemy had a chance to react!

Suddenly, I heard a huge explosion. A mine, I thought, so I threw myself straight into the water! I then realized that the fuel tank on the landing craft had exploded, so I swam to land and retreated to the fort. The enemy guard revealed himself in better light to actually be a particularly suspicious-looking bush, so no actual danger was present and I gave myself the order to stop the exercise.

How it went with the boat? Oh, I’ve got no idea. I haven’t had a chance to run recon over the terrain yet, since I’ve got light bulbs to change and the disco ball to polish first.

Hmm… During my retreat, I saw Elin running towards me. She’s the lifeguard down on the beach below Fort Pinta.

Suppose you could ask her if she saw what happened to the boat…?

Objectives: Ask lifeguard Elin about the Guard’s boating accident by the beach.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Elin can be found standing in the middle of the diving board circling the beach swimming area.

elin

Lovely day today, wouldn’t you say? Hi, my name’s Elin and I’m the lifeguard here at the beach. What’s your name?

Quest completed

______________

Whatever Ends Up in the Water…

elin

The Guard’s accident? I knew it was him sneaking away through the bushes! He looked pretty baffled…

If I saw what happened to his boat? Yeah, I ran here when I heard the explosion so I didn’t see the actual accident but whatever ends up in the water here usually drifts ashore along the foreland which crops out over past the bathing area. If his boat didn’t sink, it’s pretty sure to have ended up there.

If you find the boat, you could come and let me know since I need to be sure it won’t be dangerous for the people who come swimming here.

Objectives: Look for the missing boat along the outcrop of land past the bathing spot.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Inspect the wrecked boat washed up on the beach and return to Elin.

elin

Did you find the boat? Bits of it, you say… Hmm. Why are you so interested in a wonky old boat like that anyway?

Oh, you need a boat to get to South Hoof? And James’ other boats are in pretty much the same shape? Hmm, maybe there’s a chance you can repair the boat with the parts you find here? Worth a try, right? It’s pretty quiet here right now so I can help you if you’d like?

Quest completed

______________

One Man’s Wreck is Another Man’s Boat!

elin

If the other boat is also broken, you’ll probably need to fix that as well. Maybe there’s some stuff from the wreck you can use for that?

I’ll go and take a look at your boat while you look for parts here on the beach that you can use. What do you say?

Nice. Have a look along the little peninsula where you found the wreck. Everything that sunk has probably washed ashore there… See you in a while by the pier where your boat is!

Objectives: Look for and collect parts of the wrecked boat along the outcrop of land past the bathing spot. When you’re done, talk to Elin. She’s waiting on the pier where James’ boat is.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Clean the beach of boat parts and return to Elin.

elin

Hi again! Looks like you found loads of useful stuff, we’ll definitely be able to make use of this.

Quest completed

______________

Fishing for an Engine

elin

Well Rita, I don’t see there being any problems with sealing the hull of your boat with the parts we have here. We just need to get hold of some kind of glue or sealant to hold it all together.

The engine, on the other hand, is a different story. You’ll need to find the wreck’s engine if you’re going to have any chance of fixing it.

You didn’t see an engine on the shore, you say?

I guess it sank when the fuel tank exploded on the Guard’s boat. It’s probably on the seabed out by the diving board at the bathing spot. Have a look there and see if you can’t salvage it. Here’s the anchor from the boat, perhaps you could use it as a kind of fishing hook to fish up the engine? Hehe!

Use the rope to fish out the engine. Come back once you’ve found it, and I’ll see if I can find a way to use these parts you found in the meantime.

Objectives: Salvage the engine from the water outside Fort Pinta Beach.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Leave your horse on the beach and go on foot up onto the diving board to be able to fish for the engine. Once you have hauled it up, return to Elin.

elin

Nice work! Now we’ll have enough spare parts and then some!

Quest completed

______________

A Thin Sealant

elin

I reckon I should be able to get the engine going for you Rita. I was a mechanic at the Jorvik City scrapyard before I became a lifeguard here. I hardly ever saw the sunshine at that scrapyard, so changing career was pretty much the best decision I ever made!

Anyway, I saw a barrel of sealant further down the pier, that should do the trick for sealing up the hull. It should’ve been delivered to my friend Donald the Builder in Jarlaheim but it’s been sitting there for weeks now so I guess the ferry captain must’ve forgotten about it. Would you ride over and get it? I’ll text Donald and ask him if it’s okay if we use it. He’ll say yes, so ride over and grab it now!

Objectives: Fetch the barrel of sealant on the pier and ride back to Elin.

Rewards: 45 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

The barrel is tiny and set on the pier by the blue/green ferry station. Return to Elin with the barrel.

elin

Exactly, that’s the barrel I was talking about.

Oh, speak of the devil, a text from Donald… He writes that we should just take as much sealant as we need and that if there’s something there’s never a shortage of, it’s sealant. Sounds good Rita, Donald usually knows what he’s talking about.

Quest completed

______________

Seal the Boat!

elin

Now you just need to use the sealant to seal the hull of the boat. With the parts from the wreck you found earlier, you shouldn’t have any problems making it watertight.

I’ll wait here, just ask if you need anything!

Objectives: Seal the hull of the boat and then talk to Elin.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP

Dismount your horse and use the sealant to fix up the boat into tip-top shape!

elin

Great! That hull isn’t gonna let a drop of water into it now!

Quest completed

______________

Dip Interrupted

elin

Well well, I’m sure we’ll get some speed out of this engine eventually! I’ve got some tools you can borrow, but maybe could you do me a favor in return?

Yesterday night, I took a quick little dip down by the pier on the other side of Fort Pinta. It was pretty late, around the same time the Guard was out on his little adventure in the boat. When I heard the explosion, I ran outta there, I didn’t grab shoes or anything and got to the beach as quick as I could. I ended up leaving more than just my shoes! All my clothes are still over there… Do you think you could go grab for me?

Thanks Rita!

Objectives: Find the clothes that Elin left behind on the other side of the Fort Pinta.

Reputation: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Out skinny dippin’ huh? I got ya fam.

Ride over to the small huts on the other side of the stone bridge and find Elin’s clothes. Return to her when you have found them all.

elin

Oh, thanks Rita! They’re my favorite clothes so I was a bit worried they might have gone missing!

Quest completed

______________

Boat Engine Repairs

elin

Here are my tools Rita. I haven’t really used them in the time since I left the scrapyard in Jorvik City, but they’re still in good condition as I’m sure you’ll notice!

You know how to repair an engine, right? Haha, of course, sorry I even asked!

Good luck and let me know if you need anything.

Objectives: Repair the engine, then talk to Elin.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Dismount your horse to repair the engine with Elin’s tools. Speak to her when you are finished.

elin

You’re not a bad mechanic! You could get a job at the scrapyard if you wanted… The engine looks like it was delivered straight from the factory!

Quest completed

______________

No Boat Without Fuel!

elin

There we go Rita! Now your boat is as good as new! All you need now is to fill the tank with fuel so you can sail away.

Fuel?

You didn’t get any fuel from James? Haha, well without fuel you won’t be getting very far. Probably best you ride to him ask him for some.

I need to get back to lifeguarding the beach now, but it was really nice to meet you! Nice to be able to use my old skills again as well, that doesn’t happen much anymore haha!

Good luck over at South Hoof, see you around!

Objectives: Ask James for some fuel for the boat.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

James is not known for having well-thought out plans…

james

Hey Rita. Have you already been over to South Hoof?

You need fuel for the boat, you say.

Hmm. Fuel is so expensive… You sure it’s necessary? Can’t you row?

Quest completed

Free Fuel is the Best Fuel!

james

Okay, okay, I get it… If the lighthouse doesn’t light back up again it’ll be a disaster for my businesses… I don’t have much in the way of cash flow right now Rita, so maybe you’ve got a good idea of where you could get hold of some cheap fuel…

Steve? He’s got a huge fuel tank you say? Do you think you could get some from him? Great idea Rita! That way, it’ll be free!

You’ve got a horse Rita, can I sit behind you while you ride?

Nice boat Rita, but are you sure it’s seaworthy? It looks to be in pretty lousy shape…

Set Sail for Sorrow

holly

Rita, I think it’s best if you take the boat to Cape Sorrow yourself. The more space you have in the boat, the fewer trips you’ll need to make to pick everyone up.

Just take it easy, okay? The waters around Cape Sorrow are full of really strong currents and dangerous ground. Plenty of ships and boats have met their end at the Cape, and I really don’t want you to join them.

Good luck!

Objectives: Sail your boat to Cape Sorrow.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 30 XP

Set Cape Sorrow as your destination and speak to Sigrid when you land.

sigrid

Hello there. I’m Sigrid, South Hoof’s lighthouse keeper. Might I ask who you are?

Rita. Delightful.

You’re here to save us, you say? I saw you on your way here and you’re a decent navigator but is your boat really seaworthy?

Quest completed

Unlucky Twice at Sea

sigrid

How we’re feeling, you ask?

Considering the circumstances, everyone is doing rather well. Except for my husband, Jonas. He says he’s fine, but I know he’s just trying not to worry me.

He was in the water long after the boat went down, and he gave all the dry clothes he managed to save to Madison so that she wouldn’t freeze. His temperature was right down, and even though he’s stronger than a walrus, he might…

…What happened, you ask? Well, Jonas had taken Madison out on a fishing trip, but when they were on their way home Jonas steered a little too close to Cape Sorrow. He knows how dangerous the water is here, but he wanted to show Madison one of his favorite cliffs out this way. It was pretty stupid of him, but he meant well, as he always does. The fishing boat ran aground and sank almost immediately, but Jonas managed to swim ashore with Madison. I saw what happened from up in the lighthouse, so I ran down to the farm and got Erik.

Together we took our boat and got to Cape Sorrow as quickly as we could, but sadly, Erik also managed to run aground. Jonas had to throw himself into the water again to save us. He got us up onto the shore, but I think it was too much, even for my lovely, brave husband.

I don’t think there’s any danger to my Jonas, but maybe could you take a look at him?

Objectives: Talk to Jonas and see how he is.

Chapter One- Gateway

It was a matter of seconds before the car disappeared. The girl that had just been dropped off was now standing silently in front of a tall gate. Normally, she would have been freaking out, because honestly, who wouldn’t? This place seemed awfully sketchy, and she didn’t like that feeling. In fact, she didn’t like the feeling this whole island gave her.

So here she was. Alone on an island, not knowing what to expect. It didn’t matter anyway, if she was as far away from her family as possible, she was happy. Simple as that.

She sucked in a deep breath. Here goes nothing… She raised a hand to bang gently on the iron bars. “Anyone in there?” she called softly.

No answer. She tried to press up against the gate to see what was inside. To her right, stable stood. It seemed to be vacant however, since it was the dead of night. She sighed bitterly. Horses were never her thing, and likely never will be.

“Are you the new girl?” she jumped back, noticing a blonde girl peering curiously through the rusty bars.

“I guess?”

“You know, it’s awfully strange that you’re arriving at night. No one ever does that, besides, thanks to you they forced me to stay past my working hours.” The blonde sighed and began to unlocked the gates before continuing. “My name is Julie. Go through that passage on your left and Justin will be somewhere around.”

“Thanks.” Julie sent a sharp nod in return and proceeded to relock the gates.

The new girl immediately decided she didn’t like the place. New sounds, new sights, new smells, it wasn’t her thing. At all. She didn’t bother to stay and look around, all she wanted to do was find this Justin guy and go straight to bed, wherever she was staying. She wasn’t entirely pleased to be spending her summer here, but at least she could avoid her haunting memories from back home.

She could feel herself freezing up, there was no breeze, but shivers were creeping up her spine. Memories… My sweet memories…

No, no, no… Not the time or place Toni, not the time or place. Shaking her head she walked down the passage, it wasn’t time to think about the past, right now she had to talk to Justin and start something fresh on this new island, Jorvik.

Another gate blocking her path, just great. “Hello? Justin?”

“Over here, are you Antonia?”

“Silentfall, yeah, that’s me.”

“Hmm. You don’t seem that excited to be here.”

Toni raised her head, and glared at Justin dead in the eye. “I’m not!” she spat.

“Alright, alright. I’d love to come meet you but there’s some things I need to finish up.”

Toni lifted a brow skeptically . “This late?”

He chuckled back, “unfortunately.”

“Hmm,” she murmured back. This particular area of Jorvik gave her a sick feeling. Something was off about this, Toni knew it in her gut.

“Well, Julie already took your bags as I can see,” Justin said grinning. He was right, Toni’s bags were gone! While Toni was chatting, she must have taken them and slipped away unnoticed. Who knew someone like her could be so sly? “The rooms are at the end of the building. It’s the door labelled with your name. I’ll see you tomorrow”

“Okay, I guess.”

“Oh, and Antonia?”

“It’s Toni.”

“And Toni,” he smiled. “Welcome to Jorvik, I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time here.”

She narrowed her eyes. “I doubt it,” she replied. Without another word, Justin basically disappeared, and she began to trudge her way to the rooms.

Toni knew she should try to relax, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that a pair of eyes were trying hunting her down. And indeed there were.

Let’s check and see how Jonas is feeling today after his adventure yesterday.

A New Career for Jonas

jonas

Hello again Rita! Lovely day, isn’t it?

Yesterday was a little more dramatic, wouldn’t you say? I lost my fishing boat, almost drowned, and then very nearly froze to death. Got plenty done, I’d say! Haha!

Ah well, mustn’t grumble, we’re all here feeling fine and with a new friend to boot! I mean you, of course Rita. Many thanks for all you’ve done!

Now I think about it, it was rather a good day in the end.

Objectives: Talk to Jonas.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Any day you don’t die is a good day.

jonas

My fishing boat?

Ah, no. It’s on the seabed now, rotting away amongst the crabs and seaweed. I’d started to get a little bit fed up of all that fishing though, and it feels like this might be a bit of a sign to try something new… Can’t do the same thing every day of your life, now can you Rita?

Perhaps a few more visitors might start coming to South Hoof soon, wouldn’t you think? I was thinking about maybe opening some kind of shop to give the visitors somewhere to buy the essentials… That would work, wouldn’t it Rita?

Quest completed

______________

South Hoof Shopping

jonas

You think a store sounds like a good idea?

Excellent news Rita! Then I suppose it’s time to put fishing behind me and set course for a career as a businessman. Feels good!

Do you think you could help me get started, Rita? Sigrid says I still need to rest… If she sees me doing anything other than taking it easy, she’ll go crazy. You’ll help? Oh Rita, you’re a lifesaver!

I know there are some boxes of clothes, horse equipment, and other odds and ends hanging around on the farm someplace. No one here is interested in them, but there’s actually some pretty nice stuff, and I think I could probably have them for sale! If you could find the boxes and bring them here, I think we might have something to work with.

Objectives: Look around the garden for boxes for Jonas’ shop.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

The boxes can be found inside the two barns. When you have picked all of them up, return to Jonas.

jonas

They look like just the boxes I was thinking of. Great work Rita!

Quest completed

______________

Set Up Shop!

jonas

Would you mind helping me a little more, Rita? If I start working now, Sigrid will make my life a misery, you can count on that!

You’ll help? That’s the spirit Rita, thanks!

If you could open up the boxes and set them over there? There should be a few posts and some material in there as well. If you set it all up it could well start to look like some kind of shop! It’s gonna be really nice!

Objectives: Set the boxes out in the places Jonas pointed out.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Dismount your horse to use the box from your inventory. Once all the boxes are set up, return to Jonas.

jonas

Hey, that’s looking great Rita!

Quest completed

______________

Payment Solutions…

jonas

Hmm… I just thought of something Rita… I don’t think I’ll be standing at the store selling things the whole time. It doesn’t seem particularly rewarding to just stand there and wait for people to turn up… Nope, we’ll have to think of something else.

Hmm…

I think I’ve got it! People round here are decent types, no thieves in this neck of the woods! I think it’ll be enough to just set out a little box where people can leave their money when they want to buy something? I reckon that’ll do the trick, don’t you Rita?

Hey, set these boxes out next to each of the shops. Then we’re all done!

Objectives: Set up the boxes for Jonas’ shop.

Rewards: 60 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP, Beautiful Seafaring Saddle

Remain on foot and place a lockbox at each shop, then return to Jonas.

jonas

Well just look at that, Rita! What lovely shops we have! Really lovely! Now we just need to hope someone wants to come and buy things from them!

Thanks for everything Rita. I looked through the boxes and found this… I think it’ll suit you perfectly!

Thanks again, and I hope we’ll see each other again soon Rita!

Quest completed

Holly wants to speak to us now. Let’s go find her behind the house.

One Last Thank You from Holly

holly

Hey again Rita! I hoped to be able to catch you before you rode off!

Thanks so much for all your help. I don’t know what we’d have done if you didn’t turn up and save everyone!

Have you met my husband Erik, by the way? You only saw each other very briefly out at Cape Sorrow…

Objectives: Talk to Erik.

Rewards: 100 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Pleased to meet you sir, even though you be grumpy.

erik

Hi Rita!

Like Holly just said, I’m Erik.

Thanks for saving us. I was really frightened out there on Cape Sorrow, but I tried to put on a brave face for Madison. Now though, I’m mostly angry. This would never have happened if it wasn’t for my stupid father!

As long as nobody other than him gets into trouble on his little adventures, then I don’t care so much, but this time he put my daughter Madison in harm’s way. He’s taken it too far now. I don’t know what I’m gonna do but things can’t carry on like this…

I’m sorry, Rita.

I won’t drag you into our family conflicts. Thanks again, I hope to see you again when all this has calmed down.

Quest completed

Sigrid also has some words for us. Let’s go see her by the lighthouse.

The Ferry to South Hoof

sigrid

Good day to you Rita. If I understand correctly, you’ve already been inside the lighthouse, otherwise I would have gladly given you a tour.

Might you have time to help me out with one more thing?

It’s to do with the ferry that used to go between South Hoof and Fort Pinta. I’d love to see it get going again. What if an accident happens at some point? We’d need to be able to connect with the mainland in a hurry in that case…

I don’t know who to talk to on the mainland, but perhaps James in Fort Pinta can help you? I don’t know him, but apparently he’s the one who calls the shots over there…

You’re not sure James is the right person to talk to, but you’re happy to help anyway, you say? Thanks Rita!

I hope to see you again sometime.

Objectives: Talk to James about the ferry between Fort Pinta and South Hoof. Seems like he’s already here at South Hoof, by the ferry landing.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

I thought you were… Allergic to water??

james

Hey Rita!

Check me out, just arriving by ferry! Cool, right? Hmm? Why is the ferry running?

Well, when I told everyone about the dark lighthouse at South Hoof, the few tourists who were left went crazy and wanted to visit South Hoof to see for themselves. So I called the Councilman at Silverglade and told him what had happened. When he heard you’d gone to South Hoof on your own, he suddenly became very serious and said he’d fix the ferry situation immediately. Only a couple of hours went by before there was a new ferry turning up at the dock at Fort Pinta. I got to come across on the maiden voyage, and here I am! The ferry will travel regularly between South Hoof and Fort Pinta from now on!

Quest completed

______________

A Little Souvenir from South Hoof

james

There’s gonna be some big bucks to be made here Rita! Now you and all the tourists can come here as often as you like!

I’ll take my boat back that you borrowed. You know it was only to borrow, right? Of course you can borrow it again if you pay the rental fee.

Objectives: Talk to James again.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP, South Hoof Cap

Wow, you should be paying me for fixing it so that you have a boat to rent out!

james

If that’s all the thanks you get for helping? Haha, of course not Rita!

Here’s a little token of my appreciation. A little souvenir to remind you of your adventures at South Hoof. I was thinking about selling them to the tourists. They’ll go like hot cakes, don’t you think?

Seeya around Rita!

Quest completed

You have now discovered the South Hoof ferry station. The first time you discover it, you may have to call for pick up and discover the other end in Fort Pinta. I had to do that on my main account, but not on my blog account. So I do not know if it was initially a glitch that has been fixed or if it just does not work right away for some people.

The pink ferry to South Hoof does not have a map icon, but it runs on the same rotation as the green ferry to Fort Pinta. Make sure you are waiting long enough for it if it seems it is not appearing to you.

GEMO Machine

madison

Hi Rita!

Of course I know who you are!! Don’t you remember me? You helped my family get away from Cape Sorrow.

Haha, it was lucky you came, Dad was about to go crazy. Sadly we never got to make a raft like grandma would’ve wanted us to.

Thanks anyway, though.

Hey listen, I’ve got this awesome game on my GEMO. Have you played on a GEMO before?

You haven’t?! It’s the latest thing in gaming. Gaming Emulator Music Optimizer is what it means, could you get a cooler name?! You can listen to music, be online, and play games. You can do loads of stuff.

Hmm, I had it in my pocket a moment ago… Oh, of course! I left it here on the farm when grandpa wanted us to leave on the boat.

I just need to find it first and then I can show you, okay?

Hmm? You wanna help? Cool! Do you see my smile right now? Thanks so much!

Objectives: Help Madison look for her GEMO.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Search around the farm for the GEMO. When you can’t find it, return to Madison.

madison

You couldn’t find it either?

Sigh.

I really wanted to show you my awesome game!

Quest completed

______________

Agent & Commander

madison

Haha, look at that! One of the hens has got my GEMO machine by its headphones and is dragging it around after itself. Haha, that looks pretty funny.

Hey, we need to catch it though!

Mission: HenCatch starts… NOW!

Agent Rita, oh, do you wanna be called Agent Rita? Is that okay? You can be Agent Rita and I’ll be Commander! That sounds cool.

Haha, okay. Our goal is to capture the hen… Samara! She’s working for a secret evil organization.

Our aim here is to recapture the valuable object that Samara has stolen which has the power to destroy the entire planet!

Agent Rita, your mission is to sneak up to Samara and attempt to take back the magic GEMO. I’ll make sure she doesn’t escape, because if she does, hope could be gone for all mankind.

Okay Agent Rita, are you ready to save the world?

Let’s do this!

Objectives: Catch the hen, then give the GEMO back to Madison.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

This quest may be difficult!

It works exactly like catching chickens on the Sunfield farm.

Dismount your horse and chase after the hen on foot. It is best if you hold the cursor slightly above your character’s head, and click continuously as you get to the chicken. If you do not catch her, she will run away and disappear to another location on the farm.

Return to Madison when you have caught the hen and recovered the GEMO machine.

madison

Haha!!

You caught it! Oh wow, my stomach hurts after all the laughing! Haha! We need to do this again sometime hahahaha!!

Quest completed

______________

GEMO Surgery

madison

Oh! Seems that Samara the hen’s little runaround with my GEMO has broken it a bit… I can’t get it to switch on! Stupid chicken!

You want to try fixing it, you say? Wow! Are you like Queen of All Knowledge or something?! Haha!

I know you can’t promise you’ll fix it, but it’s super nice of you to offer to take a look at it. Let’s imagine the whole thing is surgery and you’re gonna operate on the GEMO!

You’re master surgeon Rita! And I’m your doctor’s assistant! We’ve just received GEMO into the emergency unit, a being that’s ended up with some terrible injuries.

Come on Doctor Rita! We can do this!

Objectives: Try to help Madison fix her GEMO.

Rewards: 35 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Dismount your horse and use the screwdriver on the GEMO. This will begin a minigame to fix the GEMO machine. There will be a long bar with an arrow moving back and forth above it. Click when the arrow is over the highlighted green section of the bar. Complete all of the levels to finish your attempt at repairing the machine.

madison

It didn’t work?

Oh no. A moment’s silence for GEMO. You fought right up to the end, little guy. Farewell.

Don’t be sad, Rita!

I have another idea on how we could fix GEMO.

Quest completed

______________

The Wizard in the Invisible Valley

madison

Like I said, I think I have an idea of how we can save my GEMO.

There’s a wizard who lives in an invisible valley! There’s only one person who’s ever been there, and that’s me!

Okay, well he’s not exactly a wizard. Haha. It’s one of my best friends who lives there. He’s a hermit, he hides away from everyone and keeps to himself, but he’s great at building and repairing things. He’s even great with horses!

He’ll definitely be able to fix my GEMO.

I’d love to have come with you to see him, but I’ve promised my grandma I’d help out at the lighthouse now.

Sigh.

But I’ll tell you how to get there.

You see far off over there, there’s a really big tree… Ride towards that.

When you’re almost there, head left towards the edge of the cliffs. Keeps your eye out for a path that leads down towards the beach, which is where he lives.

I think you’ll find it pretty easily. Say hello to him from me.

Seeya later Rita! Today was fun! Thanks!

Objectives: Follow Madison’s description and find the Hermit.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Off to see the hermit tech wizard!

hermit

Huh?! Who’s there?! What do you want?!

Quest completed

______________

How Do I Know You Are What You Say You Are?

hermit

Eh…

Yeah yeah, I heard what your name was, I just don’t want to talk to you.

Eh…?

So Madison sent you, you say? Suuuure, okay, whatever you say.

Eh… Leave me alone.

Sigh.

Okay, well let’s see. What kind of evidence do you have that it’s really Madison who sent you?

GEMO? Well how do I know you haven’t stolen it?

…I’m not getting rid of you, am I?

Let’s look at it this way: I can see you’ve got a horse there. If you can answer my questions about horses, then I might be able to believe you.

Objectives: Answer the Hermit’s questions.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

His questions are easy to answer if you remember that a dalmatian is not a breed of horse, horses have hooves for feet, and a foal is a baby horse.

hermit

Hmm, so you know a fair bit about horses.

Quest completed

______________

I’ll Only Talk to Your Horse

hermit

I still don’t want to talk to you.

But you knew the answers to my questions.

Eh…

What’s the name of that horse of yours?

Summerblaze, eh? Well, that’s a nice name.

Umm…

I’ll look at that GEMO machine that you say is Madison’s if you can prove to me that you’re a true rider. You might have just got lucky with those questions.

If you can complete my racetrack before the time runs out, then I’ll be convinced you’re telling the truth. Otherwise I shan’t speak any further with you. In that case, I’ll only talk to your horse. Okay?

Eh… So you’re accepting the challenge? Huhmmm… Brave.

Objectives: Ride the Hermit’s race as fast as you can.

Rewards: 40 Jorvik Shillings, 35 XP, 75 Horse XP

Reputation: 10 with Hermit on the Heath

Complete the hermit’s beach race to prove yourself worthy to him. Though will it be enough?

hermit

Well knock me down with a feather! What a display! What an outstanding riding technique!

Quest completed

______________

GEMO in Repair

hermit

That, Rita, was incredible! Truly unbelievable! Where did you learn to ride like that? I must say I’m impressed! Very impressed indeed.

Eh…

GEMO, yes.

Umm… It could take a while, so you can leave now.

Why? Why are you asking if you can help me?

If I’m not going to be rid of you, then you can try fixing that trough over there.

Objectives: Help the hermit repair his trough, then talk to him afterwards.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

Dismount your horse to use the repair tools on the water trough next to the house, then tell the hermit when you are finished.

hermit

You repaired the trough?! Well knock me down with a feather!

Quest completed

______________

The Handy Rider

hermit

That was a quick repair. A good rider as well as handy!

Eh…

Are you sure you fixed it?

Can you pour water into it without the water running out of it?

Eh… Where is there some water?

Umm…

You can get water from the pump. Here, you can fill this bucket up with water.

Objectives: Fill the trough with water, then talk to the Hermit.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

Dismount your horse and place the bucket under the pump. Fill the bucket with water, then take it to the trough. When you have filled the trough, return to the hermit.

Hmm, well if there was nothing else, then you can leave. I’ll look at the GEMO for Madison.

Why are you still here?

…

Yes, well I heard your question about why I own a trough but I didn’t really didn’t really know why I should answer you.

Hmm. Well you’ve no doubt seen that there are wild horses here.

The climate here on South Hoof isn’t what you would call ideal for my four-legged friends. The horses here live a life full of hardship which is why I do all I can to help them. If I don’t help, who will?

You want to help? You’re also fond of the wild horses here? Hmm, well yes, you can help I suppose.

Eh…

I need to… I have to… Oh, you can just go and tidy up the carrot patch if you have to help. I need to be alone now.

Objectives: Tidy up the Hermit’s carrot patch, then talk to him.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 10 with Hermit on the Heath

Dismount your horse and use the clippers to remove the weeds from the carrot patch. Return to the hermit when you are finished.

hermit

Well knock me down with a feather! That was fast! You’re faster than a horse who’s…

…Thanks.

Lunch Boxes for Horses

hermit

Umm…

If you can help me help the wild horses some more?

You want to help?

Eh…

You see, I usually leave food out for the horses so that it’s easier for them to get by here. Like I told you, life isn’t easy for wild horses in these parts. The strong winds make it very hard for anything to grow here, everything just blows away.

Eh…

My question to you is… Um… Will you go and place out boxes of food for the horses?

You will?

Eh… Thanks.

Objectives: Place out food for the wild horses.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

Ride up on the cliff and place out all the food boxes, then return to the hermit.

hermit

Did it go well? Did everything look okay? Nothing strange took place?

The True Bond

hermit

I thought I could hear the horses neighing worriedly through the wind. But as long as you didn’t see anything strange…

Eh…

I’ve just completed a new racetrack that I’d like to challenge you on. It went well for you on that last track, but I’d like to see if you can manage this one as well. You can’t cheat this time in any case… If you managed to cheat with the last one, you certainly won’t be able to with this one, since I’ve just made it.

Um… Let me see the true bond between you and Summerblaze.

Eh!

So are you ready to take on the challenge? Ready beyond doubt? You’re a brave one, I must say.

Objectives: Ride the Hermit’s race as fast as you can.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP, 125 Horse XP

Reputation: 15 with Hermit on the Heath

This race is a bit trickier and runs up and around the primeval tree in the middle of the stone circle. Speak to the hermit when you have completed the race.

hermit

Knock me down with a feather! You’re a fine rider. It’s impossible to ride as well as you do if you don’t speak the horse’s language.

Quest completed

Until Next Time

hermit

We must speak further about your riding technique, Rita! I loved it, it was like you were flying in the saddle with Summerblaze.

Eh…

I’ll fix Madison’s machine, I’m really quite technical even if you wouldn’t think it to look at me.

Eh…

She can get it back next time she’s here. If you want to compete more on the racetrack, you’re welcome to come back. I can keep time while you ride the tracks. But now I have to do other things…

Objectives: Talk to the hermit.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP, Brown Fishing Hat

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

Looks like we’ve won him over, if just a tiny bit.

hermit

I can’t be bothered with you anymore, so you’ll have to leave. I need to… Umm… I have to count all the carrots…

Goodbye.

Return to the Hermit when you are Friendly with Hermit on the Heath

A Quest of Trust

hermit

Eh…

You’ve made a good impression with me, I have to say. You’ve worked well with horses, even Summerblaze on the racetrack.

If you’re interested, you’re welcome to adopt one of these lovely wild horses. They’ve chosen to live here on the my farm because they feel like life out on South Hoof is too hard. Unfortunately, I simply don’t have room for them all though.

Eh…

So if you’d like to make a home for one of these Welsh ponies, then I’m sure they’d be very happy. The price I take for the adoption is all money that goes to a good cause.

Objectives: Talk to the Hermit.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation: 5 with Hermit on the Heath

Finally have won his full trust!

hermit

The money I earn from selling the Welsh ponies goes towards me helping more horses.

The Missing Girl…

sigrid

Hello there Rita!

Wonderful to see you again. You would’t happen to have seen Madison, would you?

No? Hmm. Wonder where she’s got to? See, there aren’t any schools here on South Hoof, so I’ve actually taken on the responsibility of home-schooling her. My son Erik seems to think we should be sending her to a proper school.

Bah! As though my teaching isn’t good enough!

Would you be an angel and have a quick look to see where Madison is? She should be down at the farm…

Thanks Rita!

Objectives: Ask around to see if anyone’s seen Madison.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Ride down to the farm and ask the family members if they have seen Madison. Erik seems least of all concerned.

erik

Are you looking for Madison?

Quest completed

______________

Something Jonas Should Have Done!

erik

Sorry Rita, but I can’t talk right now. I need to stack up these boxes properly. It’s something Jonas should have done already, but…

Sigh. Sorry if I sound short, Rita. You should’t have to be dragged into the middle of everything.

Maybe you could come back a little later…

(If you help Erik stake up the boxes, then maybe he’ll be able to help you with Madison?)

Objectives: Help Erik to stack up the boxes again.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Pick up the boxes near Erik and stack them next to the house, then speak to Erik when you are done.

erik

Thanks, Rita.

Quest completed

______________

Fish Don’t Scale Themselves

erik

Thanks for helping with the boxes Rita. You didn’t have to, you know. It was very nice of you, so thanks.

You’re wondering where Madison has got to?!

I think she’s up in her room. I’ll check for you as soon as I’ve scaled and cleaned the fish. See, the fish we’re going to have for dinner this evening aren’t going to scale themselves. Unless the whole family just wants scaly fish.

Rita, how lovely of you to offer, but it’s really not your job to scale our fish.

Oh, you don’t mind at all? Okay then, well thanks! If you do that, I can go and get Madison for you.

Here, borrow my knife to scale the fish with. The fish are over there in a yellow bucket.

Objectives: Help Erik to scale fish.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Dismount your horse and use the knife from your inventory to remove the scales from the fish in the bucket. Speak to Erik when you are done.

erik

That was quick! You must have done that before… Thanks for helping!

Quest completed

______________

The Animal Loving Kid

erik

Ah, well now the fish are ready to be cooked at least. Are you sure don’t want to stay and eat with us?

Okay, I know you’ve got lots of other stuff to do, but the invite stands if you change your mind!

By the way, I went up to look for Madison, but she wasn’t in her room. I’d guess she was pretty nearby though since she’s probably off playing with the animals. We’ve got cows, pigs, and chickens, and if shes not with one of them, she’s with the other! She’s truly the animal-loving kid!

Sorry to ask this of your Rita, I know it’s not your responsibility, but if you’re going to look in on the animals while you’re looking for Madison, you could maybe take these sacks of animal feed with you? I’m sure they’re all pretty hungry by now, and perhaps you and Madison can feed them together once you’ve found her?

Objectives: Help Erick feed the animals on the farm.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Place food out for the cows inside the barn, the chickens out near the well, and the pigs in the paddock behind the cow barn. Return to Erik when you are done.

erik

You’re back already? Didn’t you find Madison?

Quest completed

______________

Does the Hermit Have the Answer?

erik

Hmm… Then I’ve no idea where Madison might be. Why do you ask?

WHAT?! Ha, it’s boarding school all the way for that little madam unless she starts taking her responsibilities seriously here at home. She’s no doubt forgotten her homework as well.

Sigh. Sorry, this isn’t anything to do with you. I need to look for Madison now and send her to Sigrid the second I find her.

Hmm, I wonder where she could be? Have you got any ideas? If you do, I’d like you to tell her to get herself home right away otherwise I’ll confiscate her games for a week.

(You think it might be a good idea to ride to the Hermit to see if he knows where Madison is.)

Objectives: Ride to the Hermit and look for Madison.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Poor girl has no other friends to play with. No kid wants to go to school, don’t expect her to be miserable because you are, Erik sir.

REALLY?! You’ll show me how to approach and pet a horse?! Oh wow, you’re a real horse whisperer! You’re the best! Can you see me smiling right now? I’m so happy I could scream!

Agent & Commander: Back on the Case!

I promise Rita, I’ll stay away from wild horses for a while…

Haha, but you have to admit that it was fun anyway. I mean, we caught a wild horse! I got my wish granted and got my very own wild horse! I’m gonna try to find him and meet him more times. Maybe I can bring carrots or something next time!

Haha, I promise I’ll be more careful next time. I’ve tried to ride wild horses before, but this was absolutely the best! Haha! It was just so cool!

You’re right, Rita, we should start heading back home…

But hey! Can’t I sit behind you on Summerblaze? We could pretend that you and me, Agent and Commander, going to Fort… Hightower! Good name, right?

Because I’m a princess who’s under a curse, hmm… And the curse can only be held in check by me doing my homework… Or… Well… That sounded boring. Let’s say… Hmm… Yes! A test of wisdom!

The wisdom test appears by magic everyday, and if I don’t pass the test, I’ll be forever lost.

Agent Rita, we must hurry to Hightower. You need to help me get there in time before it’s too late.

To the moon and beyond! Haha!

Pirates or Ghosts or What?

I’ve never seen horses run like that if they haven’t been spooked by something. There’s nothing on this island that they could be afraid of though… We don’t have any scary predators or anything.

What if they saw a ghost?!

Wait! Listen!

There was that sound I heard earlier! Come on Rita! Something spooked the horses and I want to know what it was. It might be pirates, or…

Come on Rita! Hurry!

Objectives: Follow Madison towards the strange noise.

Rewards: 20 Jorvik Shillings, 10 XP

Ride towards the cliffs and watch as a barge — strangely similar to the ones that Dark Core uses — sail off away from the beach.

Detective Work

madison

I’ve heard grandma say about a million times how dangerous the waters are around the island, and how many ships and vessels have run aground. Why would a ferry go from here and not the harbor?

Hmm… Something fishy is going on here. I think this could be a case for the two detectives Rita and Madison.

You wanna help?

You do?! Yaay! Together we can solve this mystery. I’m almost certain that it’s the boat which spooked the horses. You think so too?

The question is, what was it doing here..?

Detective Rita! Imagine if they were pirates?! And now they’ve hidden their treasure somewhere…

Haha, come on! It won’t hurt to look a little! Now let’s find Captain Goldtooth’s treasure!

If you look over there, I’ll start looking here.

Objectives: Investigate the beach, then talk to Madison.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Ride down to the beach and investigate the area.

Locate the hoofprints, human foot prints, and a piece of rope in the sand, then return to Madison.

Hmm…

That was weird…

The horses have been down here on the beach, you can tell by the hoof prints, but why are there human boot prints here? And this rope? What do you think this could mean Rita?

I agree with you that something is very strange. Do you think it’s smugglers? Pirates?!

What a good idea Rita! You’re totally right, grandma or mum and dad might know something about the ferry. You should be called Ace Detective, Rita. I dunno what it means but the name ‘Ace’ sounds pretty cool!

Come on Rita, let’s ride to grandma. If there’s anyone who might know anything, it’ll be her. She’s usually over by the lighthouse.

An Unlikely Story

sigrid

Rita, thanks for finding Madison and bringing her home. But now she has to get on with her lessons. She has a test coming up and there’s a lot to get through before that.

I don’t think you’re lying, but it’s highly unlikely that a ferry could have stopped at that beach. Maybe it had steered off course, or perhaps it’s just that sometimes the mist and fog and low light can play tricks. People claim to have seen stranger things than a ferry out at sea there, everything from sea monsters to sea people.

So, Madison, off you go to get your books and we’ll get started with your lessons.

Objectives: Listen to Madison.

Rewards: 5 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Chapter Two – Clairvoyance

BANG

“Hello!? Anyone alive in there!?”

Antonia started her day with a rather fun awakening. After looking around wildly and trying to hide under her covers, she finally realised no one was trying to break down her door, it was just someone obnoxiously knocking on her door. Toni groaned at her stupidity and laid back down, trying to rub the sleep out of her eyes. “Who is it!?” she yelled at the person irritably. It was too early for this!

“Who do you think it is?”

It took Toni a few seconds to figure it out, but when she realised  who she grumbled a few words under her breath. Julie. It was Julie.

“Get up, get dressed, get moving! Justin wants to see you, now!” Julie barked at her.

“Alright, alright! Keep it down, I’ll be out in a minute!” Toni snapped back at her bitterly. With a small huff, Julie went back to her duties as a stable-hand. Once she had dispersed, Toni collapsed back on her pillow, her hair fanning everywhere. She hated mornings. Julie just made it worse, too.

About five minutes passed of her just laying there, so she finally decided it was a good idea to haul herself out of bed. After that ordeal with Julie, it was clear to her that staying here for the summer was an awful idea. Sighing, she absentmindedly threw on whatever clothes were closest to her, jeans and a plain old tank top apparently. She looked down at herself and shrugged, good enough!

Looking in the mirror and seeing the same old girl staring back was the worst part of the morning. She was tall and slender and her eyes have always been that same shade of deep blue-green, but what really struck Toni was her hair. It was very long, flowing well past her hips in gentle waves (her reasoning is she just doesn’t feel like ever cutting it), however the bizarre thing about it was how it was so light it looked pure white.

It really made her stand out from the rest of her family. Well, what used to be her family anyway. She blinked at her reflection. If only…

BANG

“GAH!” she shrieked as she leaped backwards, startled. Toni’s thoughts were interrupted once again by that same obnoxious knocking by that same girl who dropped by a little earlier.

“Antonia! It’s been ten minutes! Ten. Minutes!

“Sorry, sorry! I’m coming!”

“Well hurry up!”

After taking one last glance at the mirror, she dashed outside to meet Julie, who was tapping her foot impatiently on the wooden porch. The way she was glaring down at her actually almost scared Toni, and she followed Julie with no questions asked.

Together, they walked down to the same place Toni had met Justin for the first time. In better light she could now truly see what the place looked like, but quite honestly she couldn’t care less about it. The only thing she could keep her eyes on was the dark bay horse tied peacefully to one of the many hitching posts of the stable, all saddled up and ready to go.

Toni leaned over and whispered in Julie’s ear, “is that my horse? The one I’ll be riding this summer?”

Julie shrugged back, “I don’t know. Probably.” she answered.

She clearly got over that anger this morning… Toni thought as the two stopped in the middle, where Justin turned to greet them. “Antonia! Glad you could make it.”

Julie huffed at both of them and then trekked her way back to the stables, where she resumed duty. At this Toni cracked the slightest smile. I guess she didn’t!  Toni let out a small chuckle, man, that girl was sure annoying!

Justin smiled politely at her and beckoned her over with his hand. “Come over here and meet your horse!” he said.

Toni’s smile immediately fell back into a frown and her face paled a bit, her good mood dripping away. “U-uh…” she stuttered, “are you sure I should be riding a horse, I mean I could just-”

“Antonia,” he cut her off, “I’m certain you’ll be fine. Sienna is a very trustworthy horse, she’d never hurt anyone on purpose. Besides, your father mentioned something about you having past riding skills?”

“Well, I guess…” she responded, but bit her lip in worry. Why would her father tell him that? The past was supposed to be past…

“Perfect. Now get over here!” he laughed. Toni sighed and trudged over to reluctantly join him. Rubbing her arm shyly, she scanned over all the little details of the horse. She felt her eyes suddenly widen.

Justin grinned and gently patted the horse. “I’d like you to meet Siennasecret, your horse for the summer. I think you’ll really like her…”

But Toni didn’t hear a word he said, instead she stared at the horse with her wide eyes, and suddenly her horse was staring right back at her. Her heart dropped. Sienna’s large eyes were dark amber, and staring into them told Antonia that something was horribly wrong. It suddenly felt as though she could see into future, because this twisted island’s fate was about to come crashing down.

“NO! She is MY daughter!”

The Rossi household was a mess, with Sharon screaming at Isaac, and vice-versa. The cry of a baby was heard faintly from down the hall.”She is going to come with ME!” Isaac threw a punch at Sharon. The cry got louder. “Get away from here you little-” Sharon was interrupted by a blood-curling scream. “BOOM!” A wave of fire tore through the entire house, leaving the feuding couple running away from the house, each in their own direction. But luck was not on either of their sides. They both perished in the flames.

At her house, Allison ate alone. She watched some TV and shopped online. A normal day for her. As she reached for some popcorn, she got a sudden call. “Hello, is this Allison O’Riley?” She let out her breath, it was just the doctor.

“Speaking.”

“It’s time for another ultra sound, can you come on by right now?”

“Yes, I will be right there.”

Allison got in her old 1997 Mazda Minivan and prayed for the engine to turn over. Thankfully, it did, and she clunked along toward the medical clinic. “Oh my Lord!” She screamed out as she saw a fire in the direction of her sister’s house. She turned the wheel and pressed the pedal to the metal. Allison jumped out of the car and ran toward the house. And there she saw Sharon’s body burning, with her good-for-nothing husband, too. As she stood sobbing for a minute she realized something. “Oh no! The baby!” Allison  sprinted to the house and managed to get the small baby out.

To unlock these quests, you must have first visited South Hoof Peninsula and started up the ferry there from Fort Pinta.

Once you are known to the people of South Hoof, you can visit Bernadine Winterwell XVII in New Hillcrest.

Modernizing New Hillcrest

bernadine_winterwell_xvii

Hello!

It’s a completely pleasant pleasure to meet you. My name is Bernadine and I’m the decision-taking, ground-breaking, progress-making visionary all-rounder here in New Hillcrest. I pretty much run the show single-handedly on the town council, well at least since about two years ago in any case.

I’ve seen you, you know! I’ve seen you out and about on the helping hand trail, giving people a boost and a push here and there, and I’d like to offer you the town’s official thank you for all your help at the same time as extending the official welcoming hand of New Hillcrest. I mean I thought it’d be nice if you could get an official welcome to the town from a town official like me.

Welcome to “New Hillcrest: The No-Frown Town,” as we like to call it. Well, it’s actually just me calling New Hillcrest the no-frown town. For now. I’ve created a new slogan for the town because the old one is so dull and backwards-looking. Listen to this…

“New Hillcrest: a Settlement of Tradition.” Ugh, it’s so bad that it hurts my mouth just to say it. Incredibly dull. I want us to look ahead and highlight the happy, positive spirit of the townsfolk. In spite of everything they’ve got going against them, everyone here is so upbeat and lovely! That’s why it’s much better to have a slogan like…

“New Hillcrest: The No-Frown Town!” It has a much better ring to it, wouldn’t you say?

You think it’s a winner? Haha, great!

I’ve been giving some thought to doing a little market research to investigate the opinion of the people. I’d love to be able to ask the people around town what they think about changing slogans, but I haven’t had time. There’s been so much to do since I took over running the town council. New plans here and new plans there! Everything all at once!

What’s that you say? You could ask people if they want to change slogans to “the no-frown town?” Well of course I’d be thrilled if you could help out, Rita! Thanks!

Go round and ask people here on the square if they think they might like to change slogans.

Objectives: Go round to the townspeople on the square and ask if they’d like to change the town slogan from “New Hillcrest: a Settlement of Tradition” to “New Hillcrest: The No-Frown Town.”

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

The “Roadworks” is not an official faction. All reputation earned on this story arc go towards building the bridge, which is done in several levels as it was done with the bridge in Moorland.

Speak to the shopkeeps, notary, and others around the square. Most seem happy at the idea, but the notary must be a bit old fashioned.

Return to Bernadine with news of everyone’s opinions.

bernadine_winterwell_xvii

Five out of six people want to change the slogan to “The No-Frown Town?!” Wow! That’s 83.33333%! It’s a landslide!

Hurray! Then it’s decided. We’ll be changing slogans. Thanks for your help Rita!

Typical that the Notary wouldn’t want to change slogans. I had a feeling though. Hehe.

A Link to the Past

bernadine_winterwell_xvii

Everything’s starting to fall into place here in New Hillcrest as we push forward with our plans to build for the future! We’ve changed our slogan and finished building the colorful terraced houses on the other side of the street, and it’s all part of making New Hillcrest more attractive! We’ve already managed to rent out most of the home we’ve built. My forefathers ran the town council before me, but they were afraid of change and wanted to keep everything the same as it ever was. If you resist change, you just end up stuck to the same spot and getting nowhere. If you want to get anywhere in life, you have to dare to see change as something positive!

Another part of our vision for New Hillcrest’s future is to rebuild the link between New Hillcrest and South Hoof. South Hoof is a wonderful place to visit and it’s a tremendous privilege to have it so close by! The landscape there is so beautiful and vast, but the bridge that used to go there has been in disrepair for many, many years. We’ve hired a builder to take care of the restoration, but it seems to be taking him an awfully long time. Donald – as he’s called – seems to know what he’s doing but something in particular seems to have him stumped.

What’s that you say? You KNOW Donald?! What a remarkable coincidence!

You say you’d like to help?! Oh my, how wonderful! That good name you’ve made for yourself really holds true!

Ride down to Donald and see if there’s any way you can help hurry things along. He’s down at the stables just outside town.

Objectives: Go see Donald down by the stables on the outskirts of New Hillcrest. He seems to need help with repairing the bridge to South Hoof.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

Howdy, long time no see, old friend!

Donald can be found behind the sign for the stables race.

mr_bucket

Well would you look at that! Rita!

What are you doing here?

Quest completed

______________

High-Level Restoration

mr_bucket

How wonderful to see you again Rita!

Oh really? Bernadine thinks the bridge rebuilding is going too slowly? Well that’s not very reasonable of her. She’s set me on a budget that’s way too tight, and then complains about my productivity. Hmph.

What’s that? You wonder why it’s going slowly?

Umm. Heh, well… The bridge is very tall and rickety. Not stable at all. Then there’s the whole thing of me still suffering from a fear of heights… Then the part where the bridge goes over water and I can’t really be around water because of my fear of, well, water. It’s difficult enough for me to even drink water sometimes.

You think it’s pretty stupid of me to have taken the job on then?

Well yes, I suppose you might be onto something there. I thought it might have been a good way to overcome my fears, but it hasn’t really been going very well on that front…

Really?! You’ll help me fix up the bridge?! Oh, thank you Rita, thank you so much!

We can do this together! We need to give extra support to the bridge with some new pillars and we also need to lay down some new foundations.

After that’s done and everything’s a bit more stable again, we need to relay the planks along the bridge.

Shall I show you where the bridge needs a bit of reinforcement?

Objectives: Donald tells you about how the bridge between South Hoof and New Hillcrest is in need of repair.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

You are shown where the pillars and concrete bases go as well as planks on the walkway of the bridge.

PLEASE NOTE! IMPORTANT!!

You are given supplies to build the bridge as a daily quest or you can buy them with Star Coins from the construction shop in New Hillcrest.

PAY ATTENTION to where you lay your supplies as it is possible to still use them on places you have already built and will waste them if you do.

You will not be compensated for wasted supplies.

mr_bucket

Then you can… Um, I mean WE… Now WE can get started with the rebuilding.

Quest completed

______________

New Pillars for the Bridge

mr_bucket

Okay. Now we’l show Bernadine that we can get through this project at lightning speed! We need to give the bridge new support from underneath with new pillars. But the truck that was supposed to deliver the logs here to the building site just dumped them on the path that leads up to New Hillcrest instead of bringing them all the way here. Really unprofessional if you ask me. You’ll need to ride there and get them. Then we’re going to cut them and plane them so that they’ll be able to replace the broken old pillars.

You can buy ready-made pillars up on the square in New Hillcrest if you like. It’s the same old story though, the budget is so tight because Bernadine wanted to keep the costs down, so you’ll have to pay for the pillars yourself if you want the build to go faster.

Anyway, before you start, I’ll show you where you’ll find the untreated pillars, and where you need to put them up.

Objectives: To make a pillar able to withstand the weight of the bridge, you’ll need to follow these steps.

  1. Collect a log from the hill on the way up to New Hillcrest.
  2. Saw the logs into shape using the cutting machine.
  3. Plane the pillars in the plane machine to get a lovely smooth pillar.

You can buy ready-made pillars from Billy up on the square in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP, 3 perfect pillars

Reputation with Roadworks

When making a new pillar, dismount your horse to use the machines.

Return to Donald when you are finished making new pillars.

mr_bucket

These are particularly perfect pillars! Well done Rita!

Ahoy There Sailor!

mr_bucket

Oh my, oh my, I hope a storm isn’t brewing… This bridge is so wobbly that it could just collapse at any moment. The saltwater from the sea has corroded most of the bridge’s foundations, so we’ll need to build new ones right away! Before we get started, we’ll have to collect sacks of cement so we can mix up cement for the foundations. There’s been a delivery of cement sacks to the harbor just behind the stables. You’ll no doubt see the delivery ship’s masts from here, so just head in that direction.

Objectives: Ride to the harbor in New Hillcrest. There’s a ship there that’s arrived loaded with cement for us.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

The only way to get to ship is to ride up the road to Hillcrest, then down the other side of the hill, but turn before you get to the marshes. Ride around the hill to the small abandoned farmstead and down the stairs to get to the ship. Speak to the sailor there about the cement.

sailor

Ship ahoy, landlubber!

Elving’s the name. I’m a sailor here on this old ship.

You’re here to get the cement for Builder Donald, you say?

Of course! I most certainly do have a delivery of cement for Donald.

Quest completed

The Bridge Building Continues…

sailor

What are you planning to do with the cement?

Ah okay, a bridge? I prefer to take a boat between two islands instead of walking, but I suppose it’s just a matter of taste.

Here’s the cement for Donald anyway. Good luck with your building project, landlubber.

Objectives: Take the cement you got from Sailor Elving and leave it with Donald by the bridge.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

Return to Donald the same way that you came.

mr_bucket

Perfect, Rita!

Quest completed

______________

Hard Labor Helps you Sleep Better!

mr_bucket

This is the absolute best cement you can get anywhere on Jorvik. The quality of raw materials that go into it is going to make sure this bridge stays sturdy for many years to come. It might even be stable enough for me to think about daring to go over it. Or maybe not. I’m dizzy just thinking about it.

Whew. My legs are starting to wobble now, and my palms are sweating. Oh no! Stop it Donald!

Must think of something else instead…

Mixing cement! That’s what we were doing! We can focus on that instead. Much better. The sacks are already here thanks to you, so you just need to empty three of them into the cement mixer. Then you need to fetch some water from down at the stables. Take this bucket with you and fill it at the water supply outside the stable. Then pour the water into the cement mixer and switch it on! Then you’re done.

Objectives: In order to mix cement for the bridge’s foundations, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Collect three sacks of cement.
  2. Pour the sacks into the cement mixer (in the grey funnel).
  3. Collect water from the water supply at the stable with the bucket you got from Donald.
  4. Pour the water into the cement mixer (in the blue funnel).
  5. Switch the mixer on and wait until the cement is fully mixed.
  6. Fill your bucket with cement.

You can buy ready-made cement from Billy up at the square in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP, 3 buckets of cement

Reputation with Roadworks

Follow the instructions to mix cement, then return to Donald when you are finished.

mr_bucket

You’ve got a perfect mixture of cement here! Very well done, Rita.

Quest completed

Return to Builder Donald when you have fixed all six of each pillar and cement foundation.

______________

Is the Bridge in One Piece?

mr_bucket

What a fantastic job you’ve done Rita! Making a strong start is the most important part of any building project. A strong foundation. It looks great! Oh, no! I have to look down… I’m getting dizzy again…

Ohhh….

Now one of us has to head up onto the bridge to look into what needs doing. It should be sturdy enough to walk on by now. I’d go myself, but it feels way too scary for me.

You’ll do it? That’s such a relief, more than you could ever know.

Whew.

You really think I’ll be able to walk along and deal with heights one day? I can’t really see how, but I hope I’ll be brave enough someday.

Go up onto the bridge now and inspect the floor so that we can see where we need to set out new planks.

Objectives: You need to go up onto the bridge and inspect where the planks might be broken. Once that’s done, go back to Donald and let him know what you’ve found.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

Wow, this bridge is a mess, but not so much as Donald is with all his phobias. This will be a cakewalk.

mr_bucket

Wow! Good job! I’ve no idea how you can be up that high on that bridge. You’re a brave one!

Quest completed

______________

Get Away for a While

mr_bucket

How very brave you are Rita! I wish I had as much courage as you when it comes to heights.

So you’re saying the planks are completely ruined in many spots along the bridge? Oh, typical!

Would you like to know something else that’s typical? We’re all out of wood so we can’t make any more planks. I don’t know how we’re going to get around this if I’m honest…

You saw trees we could use? And we can cut them down? They’re on the other side of town?

Well, there we go then! Fantastic, we’re back on track! Rita, is there no problem you can’t solve? Ride to that spot in the woods you talked about and chop down as many trees as we need. I’ve even got an axe you can borrow!

Objectives: Ride to the outskirts of New Hillcrest and chop down a couple of trees, then ride back to Donald to drop them off.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP

Reputation with Roadworks

The riding lumberjack is at it again!

______________

Last Phase of the Build

mr_bucket

Now we’re getting some wind in our sails! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for this project. Oh! If only it was a tunnel we were building… Tunnels don’t bother me when it comes to either heights or water…

Hmm, you still think I’ll be able to walk along the dizzy heights of the bridge? Well, thanks for the support Rita!

But now we need to get this thing finished once and for all. It’s about time we get South Hoof and New Hillcrest back together again! Take one of the logs and make planks out of it. There’s a sawing machine and the planing machine there as you know. I’ve also set up the treatment machine so that you can treat the wood in a special way that stops it from decaying in the wind and weather, helping it stand up to all the use the bridge will get. Hurry now, let’s get this done!

Objectives: To make a plank that’ll stand up to the use it’ll be getting as part of the bridge, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Collect a log from the pile next to Donald.
  2. Saw the logs into straight planks using the sawing machine.
  3. Plane the planks in the planing machine to get rid of rough edges and splinters.
  4. Treat the planks against wear and tear in the treating machine.

You can buy ready-made planks from Billy up on the square in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 10 Jorvik Shillings, 5 XP, 3 perfect planks

Reputation with Roadworks

Dismount your horse to use all three of the machines, then return to Donald when you are finished.

mr_bucket

What craftsmanship Rita! The planks look wonderful. I couldn’t have done them better myself!

Quest completed

Return to Builder Donald when you have fixed all six sections of the walkway on the bridge.

Who Dares Wins!

mr_bucket

You should be proud of yourself, Rita! The bridge looks wonderful from here. If only I could dare to go up along it to see what it’s like up close.

Sigh…

You think I can do it? It’s a very stable looking bridge, I must say.

But no. I don’t dare do it…

Why do I feel like this? I’m so tired of it.

You’re going to help me across to the other side of the bridge so that I can conquer my fear of heights?

Hmm…

It could work. We can give it a go, but you need to stay right next to me the whole time.

Okay? Let’s give it a try.

The Rider’s Games – Chapter 5

Hi everyone, it’s Alice & I’m finally back. Yes, it’s been 6 months and I’m finally back from the long pause. I hope you enjoy this chapter:)

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce the opening of the 1st annual Jorvik Games! In this years Games, the Dark Riders and Soul Riders that have been picked are going to fight against each other in a game of light and dark!”

The voice of President Springson booms loud across the dim, purple lit arena. I try to ignore every inch of fear inside of me, and instead distract myself by figuring out where we all are and what I need to do when the klaxon goes off. Inside, I’m shaking with fear, and every fibre of my being wants to be back home, safe and with my family. All throughout training, I’d tried to ‘forget’ about my family back in New Jorvik, but one part of me knew that would never happen. I can feel the tension in every single Soul Rider near me, and even the Dark Riders were scared. After what seems like a lifetime, the klaxon goes off, and, as if in slow motion, all the tributes jump off their platforms and make a run for the pyramid shaped pile of supplies. I stay behind, taking in what’s happening. The Career Dark Riders, the top Dark Riders who had been training to murder us Soul Riders even since President Springson made that announcement all those years ago. I see them throwing dark magic at the  younger Soul Riders, as they frantically try to create a bubble around themselves for protection. Damon’s advice booms through my head like an alarm, waking me from a haze. “Get out of there and grab a power pack. Once you’ve got magic you don’t need much. Don’t go near. The. Careers..” So I follow it and, once the Careers are distracted with choking a young Soul Rider with dark magic, I run as fast as I can towards all the power supplies. I grab one, a fluorescent pink bag with an electrical bar inside. I take it and I’m just about to run to the darkest, dimmest area in the arena when a sharp and harsh voice fills my ears. “Where do you think you’re going, Catnip?!” It isn’t soft and joking like when Matt says it- it’s cruel and teasing. I don’t reply and instead get up and run. “Ah, ah, ah! Not so fast.” She says and I’m suddenly in the air, and I can’t breathe. Dark magical ropes entangle me and tighten around my throat. I choke and try to preserve any breath I can manage. Everything spins around and I’m just about to pass out when a voice yells out something. “Clem! Look what I found!” ‘Clem’ groans loudly. “Not now, Jacamar! I’m in the middle of killing a Soul Rider!” But she drops me and I fall onto the metal floor with a deafening thump. I clutch my throat and my breaths come out ragged. Clem places a sharp boot on my chest and presses down so I really can’t breathe. Then walks off to find Jacamar. I hear the whoosh of magic, a weak last breath and then cruel laughter.

I eventually get up and run as quick as I can to the furthest away part of the arena. I lean against the metal wall and cough. When I open my eyes my surroundings have changed. Suddenly I’m in a bright field, filled with sunflowers. It’s bright and sunny and almost like home- then I realize it is. I take a step forwards and breath in the spring air. Birds tweet and I lie in the sunflower fields. Someone leans over me, their breath smelling of strawberries and sunshine. “Rose..” I say softly, then pause. “Wait- what- what are you doing here?” Rose shrugs and then smiles, a soft, beautiful smile. “I’m always here Kat. Always..” Then suddenly the sunshine and fields turn disappear and everything goes grey and cold. Flames lick at buildings, engulfing everything in fire. Rose steps towards the fire. “No, Rose, stop- come back here!” I scream. She’s engulfed in flames and I hear a voice in my head. “Kat.. Kat.. Kat!” Then everything disappears and the voice is suddenly different. It isn’t my sisters. “Kat! Wake up!” It’s Connor and when I open my eyes he’s shaking me awake. “Rose!” I whisper when I come to focus. “Huh? Kat, you’re in the Games, Rose isn’t here I promise.” He tells me. “But she- she went into the fire and..” I choke. “Hey look, stop talking. Rest your voice, Clem got you really bad.” I start to fall back down to reality. I think about thanking him and embracing him, but then I realise I’m in the Games. I get up abruptly as if I’ve been stung and push my fringe out of my face. I’m nearly out of his view when I remember that he has my powerpack. “Get off, you can’t..” I am yelling, all ready to attack like a wild animal. Connor doesn’t even speak, just gives me this look, almost pitying. Something in my brain clicks & I slowly calm down and close my eyes. “Connor?” I say softly, but he’s gone, disappeared into the shadows. I stare into the darkness, wanting to be anywhere, anywhere but here.

To unlock these quests you must be Liked with AAE’s Archaeological Department. You join this faction when you meet Frank Einstein in Dino Valley and have learned how to dig for archaeological treasures. You can build your reputation by finding dinosaur bones and bringing them to Professor Jura in Firgrove.

Archaeology in Epona

professor_jura

Good day to you, Rita, do you have a spare moment?

Let me begin by saying that your contributions to AAE’s collection of prehistoric artifacts has been remarkably distinguished. I should rather wish to be of assistance to you in the development of your archaeological capabilities, but I fear I’m not able to teach you more than you already know.

I’ve thought long and hard about this, and I think you need to become acquainted with – at the earliest opportunity – the incredibly prominent archaeologist Hawaii Jones. You may have heard of her?

No? Ah, well that isn’t so strange. It’s been a long time since she was here for a visit to her home island of Jorvik, but right now she’s actually here. In New Hillcrest, as it happens. I’ve written a letter to her in which I bring attention to your talent and perseverance along with a recommendation that she should take you under her wing.

If you’re interested in this rather special opportunity to expand your knowledge, take this letter and present it to Hawaii herself.  But be quick, she won’t be in New Hillcrest for long.

Until next time, Rita!

Objectives: Ride to Hawaii Jones in New Hillcrest with Professor Jura’s letter of recommendation.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 15 with AAE’s Archaeological Department

Hawaii Jones can be found in the new part of New Hillcrest, on the other side of the block from Ricky Winterwell.

Hello there! Who are you?

Lovely to meet you, Rita. I’m Hawaii Jones.

So, is there something I can help you with? You have a letter for me, you say?

Exciting!

Terraced Houses in New Hillcrest

hawaii_jones

Wow, that letter of recommendation from Professor Jura was quite something, Rita! Not bad at all! Haha!

Well, well, well! Hawaii Jones can most certainly teach you a thing or two about archaeology Rita, but you see I’ve suffered something of a setback.

A little accident, if you will. Nothing more than just a broken leg, nothing terrible. How did it happen, you ask?

Well, it happened just as I was about to crack the riddle of where the Horn of Araxa is hidden. As soon as it’s healed, I’ll be out of here, and back out onto the adventure trail so if you want to learn more about archaeology, you’ll probably have to wait until I get back. Hmm? No no, I’ll only be gone a few years.

You want to help me find the Horn of Araxa?! Goodness me, how marvelous! Thanks!

Ha! This’ll be terrific! Fantastic! Actually, no! Perfect! I’d thought about leaving the old adventuring to one side while my leg was on the mend but then of course you just hop in and take over at once! Wonderful.

There’s a safe at the back of this house and in it I keep the diary of Mississippi Jones, my great ancestor! Have you heard of him?

Ah of course, he’s rather famous here in Jorvik, isn’t he? Mississippi was also looking for the Horn of Araxa and there’s a journal of all his findings in his diary. Sadly, there’s rather a lot of it missing. The very last part described how he came to New Hillcrest – although the town didn’t exist back then – but those final pages seem to have been ripped out.

If you fetch the diary from the safe, we can take a look at the last pages together. There’s a clue there which should help us find out where he went next, I’m sure of it! Would you mind going to get the diary, Rita?

Lovely, thanks! You’ll need to be able to unlock the safe. The code is… Actually, hold on! Ha! Think of this as a little test. If you can get the safe open, you can join my hunt for the Horn of Araxa. Deal?

Here’s a clue: the townhouse in New Hillcrest are red, green, blue, brown. You understand? In that order, the right number of each color. Ha! Now you get to figure it out for yourself!

Objectives: Open Hawaii Jone’s safe and get the diary. Give the diary to Hawaii Jones.

To be able to open the safe, you need to figure out the code. Talk to Hawaii Jones again if you need help.

Rewards: 15 Jorvik Shillings, 25 XP

Reputation: 10 with AAE’s Archaeological Department

Ride around the new development and count the colors of all the houses.

You figure out the code is 6455. Ride behind Hawaii’s house and use the code to open the safe, then return to her with the diary.

Ha! You figured out the code! Good work. Isn’t it fun to have a little riddle every now and again, Rita?

Now let’s see what’s in that diary.

Roman Ruins

hawaii_jones

Now let’s see here… Ha! Here’s the last thing Mississippi wrote in the diary. I’ll read it out loud:

“May 20th.

Mr Winterwell has told many incredible and exciting tales of Epona and I do believe I’m back on the trail of the Horn of Araxa. A short distance from here lie the Sunny Islets, a little collection of tiny islands where the Winterwell’s sheep graze during the summer. Mr Winterwell tells me that on one of the islands, there are Roman ruins and I rather suspect there may be remains of a laboratory that came under the learned use of Nova Alexandria. With any luck, I’ll be able to find something that leads me further.

The island I’m looking for is special in another way as well. Nothing grows there. Cornelia and I have visited South Hoof and saw the tree there, so I realized right away which island was the one in question.”

Hmm… What do you think Rita? Do you know which island he’s talking about? You think you do? Haha! Outstanding!

You know something? If you can find the Horn of Araxa, or even a good clue that takes us closer to it, I’ll teach you absolutely everything I know about archaeology in Epona. Does that sound good?

Great! I like you, Rita! Just follow Mississippi’s footsteps! Good luck!

Objectives: Find the spot Mississippi Jones was describing in his diary. Look there for anything that might give you a clue to where the Horn of Araxa might be hidden.

“May 21st

Dearest Cornelia, my loyal apprentice. I sincerely hope you don’t read this. I’m being followed. I’ve suspected it for some time now, but I’m finally certain. I just don’t know who it is… If you’re now reading my words, I truly hope you’ll follow after me, finding me should I not return. I doubt it would be necessary, but something I never failed to learn on my adventures is that one can never be too careful. Haha! In any case, allow me to tell you a little of my pursuit of the Horn of Araxa.

The horn is not here, but then I never expected it to be. This is the place where Jorvikius the Younger – an alchemist from Nova Alexandria – did most of his work. He dedicated his life to trying to solve the mystery of the dead primeval tree at South Hoof, and if he had managed to understand why it had died, then Jorvik’s history could have looked very different… The power the Romans could have gained from the… No, now I’m rambling.

What I came across gave me, in any case, an idea. Perhaps the horn was in the barracks outside Nova Alexandria? It’s the most valuable artifact so perhaps it needed protection of the legionnaires stationed there? It was worth a try, even if it would be most difficult to find anything at all after the dynamite factory – built on exactly the same spot – was blown sky high. If there’s anything to be found, I have no doubt it rests at the bottom of The Great Thunder.”

My dearest Cornelia, my pursuer has tried to keep up with my progress, but he must have mistaken me for a simple nitwit! I have of course swept away all of the traces I’ve left behind me, and not even a bloodhound could have followed me here! Ha! In any case, don’t allow me to worry you. I’ll continue my story of the Horn of Araxa.

Almost everything at this archaeological site was destroyed in The Great Thunder, as I’m sure you understand. There is no new information to be found here. However, I did manage to shake off my pursuer which was of course my main reason for coming here.

Now it’s finally time to journey to Epona’s most mystical place. It’s time to look for the Horn of Araxa within Nova Alexandria itself. There, in the library once filled with Roman alchemist and philosophers, is where it quite simply must be. If you’re reading this letter, follow in my footsteps dear Cornelia. They lead south, to Nova Alexandria, or at least to the fort which was constructed around it.”

“May 23rd.

Curses! I’m still being followed. Who is this inescapable shadow? Nobody has ever succeeded in following me like this, my pursuer must be blessed by Fortuna herself.

Dearest Cornelia. I have been into the library of Nova Alexandria, the very first person to do so since the Romans left Jorvik. I’ve seen fantastical, unfathomable and horrendous things. Things that would make any other man silver-haired overnight, but that’s a story for another time. The Horn of Araxa was not there, but now… Now I finally know for sure where it is!

I must first do away with my pursuer once and for all. I thought of climbing down the cliffs and down to the sea. Nobody could follow me that way; there are very few in the world who could take themselves down such a precipice without the very finest mountaineering equipment.

I doubt it will be necessary, but I shall leave the next page in a place I’ve already seen from here. Ha! It’s quite perfect! If you look out over the Sunny Islets from the edge here, you’ll understand. X marks the spot, just like a good old treasure map! Ha!”

X marks the spot? What did Mississippi mean? You look out over the cliff edge, down over the small islands. X marks the spot…

“May 24th.

Dearest Cornelia, my pursuer is finally away! Nobody could have followed me down those cliffs. Ha! Nobody gets the better of Mississippi Jones!

In Nova Alexandria I found a scripture that described the exact location of the Horn of Araxa. The Romans understood the power of the horn and hid it in a place far away down where the source gives water to Epona’s two rivers. I myself have seen the remains of the aqueduct the Romans built to provide Nova Alexandria with hot spring water, but now I know that it was built only to deceive their enemies. A secret vault was built into the mountainside. A vault in which they protected all their very most valuable treasures.

I shall make my way to the water source now. If you’re still following me, you’ll find the next page there.”

Finally a little peace, dear Cornelia. My pursuer still has yet to be seen, and I do say even I myself would’ve found it difficult to follow me here. It would seem I have plenty of time to calmly and methodically look through these Roman ruins, but the Horn of Araxa is calling.

The secret vault built by the Romans in the mountainside is in the crater in the middle of this mountain. I’d thought to follow the aqueduct through the mountain to the other side, but it has collapsed completely. It’ll be quite the long climb, but a silly little mountain has never stopped Mississippi Jones before! Ha!”

A Roman Puzzle

You take out the rolled up page from the brass tube and begin to read…

“May 26th.

Dearest Cornelia, it’s quite unbelievable. My pursuer is still on my tail. He came after me – stealthy as a panther – right the way up the mountain. I think I recognized him at one point, but the man he reminds me of is dead… My eyes were playing tricks on me, no doubt.

I’ve found the gateway to the secret vault. Everybody thought it was a piece of art or part of an ancient temple, but it’s actually a part of the door mechanism. I think I understand exactly how to open the gateway: there are buttons on the pillars all around the place and if you press them in the right combination, the way opens up as if by magic. The pattern on the gateway shows which three are the right ones to press.

I still have a head start on pursuer, and if I’m quick I should be able to get into the vault before he catches me up.”

You don’t see anything obvious around that matches what Mississippi was talking about. No artwork or parts of an old temple, but it was a long time since he was here. A lot must have changed since then. You decide to take a look around to see if you can find anything.

The pillars must be part of some kind of code which opens the gateway Mississippi was writing about. You decide to investigate the pillars to see if you can solve the puzzle as well!

Objectives: Solve the puzzle of the pillars to open the door to the secret vault.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 40 XP

It does not matter which order you press the buttons, only that you press the correct ones. If you press an incorrect button, the mechanism will reset and you will have to restart the quest. The pillars can be found along the side slopes of The Cauldron.

The spider depiction on the door is your clue. All the buttons you press should relate to spiders; a baby spider, a spider web, and the Roman numeral for 8: “VIII”

Once you have activated the correct three buttons, return to the doorway.

Hello! How did it go?

You didn’t find the Horn of Araxa, you say?

Ha!

Welcome to the club!

That’s the life of an adventurer for you. We risk our lives for treasures and relics that simply vanish from our hands at the last second.

Haha!

But it’s the hunt that’s the most fun, as we usually say in my family. The treasure itself is never as exciting as the adventure you go on to find it. Wasn’t it fun though, Rita?

Ha! You’re a girl after my own heart Rita!

Now I’ve got the rest of Mississippi’s diary in any case, so I must give you a huge thanks Rita. It means a lot to me that you risked so much to find it.

If you’re still interested in learning about archaeology in Epona, I can try to teach you all I can!

All Books and Maps

hawaii_jones

So! Archaeology in Epona is the order of the day!

While you were out looking for the Horn of Araxa, I’ve gone through all my old books and maps in Epona. I’ve spoken to the people of New Hillcrest and picked up a few tips on where we might uncover some great finds.

I hope you’ve got time, we’ve got a lot to get through…

Objectives: Learn from Hawaii Jones all about where to find sites for an archaeological dig in Epona.

Rewards: 50 Jorvik Shillings, 50 XP

Reputation: 50 with AAE’s Archaeological Department

Archaeology in Epona works exactly as dino digging in Dino Valley. Small special stones are scattered around certain areas and light up periodically with treasures (or junk) to find. Collect all in a set, as well as be on the look for extra special items.

Hawaii will tell you which areas to search around and introduce you to the people you will need to bring your treasures to for a reward.

hawaii_jones

There we go! Now you know just as much as I do about archaeology in Epona. Now you won’t have a single problem in finding dig sites you can use your old pickaxe on.

There are four areas in which you can hunt for archaeological treasures.

Around Butter Hill you can look for remnants from the Roman barracks, and in the Mirror Marshes you can find evidence of it being a hiding place for victims of shipwrecks. There are always exciting finds along the Shipwreck Shores, and people have lived on the Eastern Slopes throughout history, which makes it a great place to dig.

It’s been lovely to meet you Rita! Come back whenever you’ve got any questions, I’m sure I’ll be around New Hillcrest for a while later.

See you around!

Oh, just one more thing. If you find anything good, I happen to know Professor Chiron here in New Hillcrest will trade them with you for nice items. You should ride over and talk to him.

Seeya!

Objectives: Talk to Professor Chiron in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 30 Jorvik Shillings, 20 XP

Reputation: 25 with AAE’s Archaeological Department

Professor Chiron can be found a few houses down the street from Hawaii Jones.

professor_chiron

Good day to you! Trade archaeological objects, you say? Hmm…

That sounds interesting. Very interesting indeed. I’m actually from AAE, they’ve sent me here to Epona to go on some digs, but I haven’t actually managed to get started just yet. The wilderness around here feels a little too treacherous for my liking, so I’ve been trying to start digging here in my garden. Hasn’t been too fruitful so far…

Trading with you sounds like a very interesting idea! If you’re out there looking for objects in that dangerous wilderness, I won’t have to do anything as reckless as risking my own life when you’re doing it instead! We’ll make a great team!

Meet Walter Winterwell

professor_chiron

Now I’m honestly not interested in absolutely everything you find, most archaeological stuff is usually rubbish. Some things, though. Some things can be especially valuable to someone.

Walter Winterwell is a man of really odd taste, so it could be worth your while to talk to him. You’ll find him up at the Winterwell family’s big house here in New Hillcrest.

Bye for now!

Objectives: Talk to Walter Winterwell in New Hillcrest.

Rewards: 25 Jorvik Shillings, 15 XP

Remember, trading with Walter is -extremely- lucrative. Keep track of those extra special finds to bring to him!

Amnesia – Chapter 1

$

I am in a cloud of blackness. Nothing to see. Nothing to hear. Nothing to feel. Then a piercing light breaks through the darkness. I squeeze my eyes closed as hard as I can, trying to stop the glaring light from reaching me. Then I begin to hear noises. The constant, steady beeping of what seems to be a machine. The quiet rustlings of something or someone moving about. This fills my curiosity and as much as I want to go back to sleep, I have to know what’s happening.

With a little bit of effort, I prise my eyes open. A bright light enters my vision. I wince and close my eyes again. Then, with more determination, I open my eyes again. This time the light is less blinding and I can look around. I am in a room with pale blue walls and whitewashed curtains.

Why am I here?

I move and something rustles. It’s a white sheet that smells strongly of bleach. I’m in a bed. With an enormous effort of will, I sit up. Something touches my arm and I shriek, only to realise that it’s my hair, long and red.

I try to remember why I’m here but to no avail. I try to remember anything, growing more frantic but it’s like a wave swept over my mind, taking my memories one by one, back out to sea.

Who am I?

I can’t even remember who I am. My vision blurs and wavers and tears fall down my face. It’s like I’ve woken up in a nightmare with no way out.

With a slight creak, the door opens and a woman walks in. She has a kind face and sparkling blue eyes. She takes one look at my tearstained face and wraps her arms around me.

‘Oh honey. Are you alright?’

I gently push the lady arms away and try to compose myself. I can’t rely on other people. I need to be strong.

‘Who are you?’ I ask.

‘I’m Sandra, a nurse. I work here’

She pauses and looks me in the eye.

‘Sweetie this is a hospital. You were in an awful, awful accident’

My head starts pounding as the nurse’s words flood into my brain.

‘Who am I?’ I ask, my heart beating faster and faster.

‘You’re sixteen and from what we know, your name is Keri’

Sandra looks at me, her blue eyes sad and sorrowful.

‘We don’t know anything else. You were found just outside the Harvest Countries and were airlifted to Epona’s hospital’

I nod, my thoughts racing like a hurricane.

‘I’ll give you some time alone to think things through’ Sandra says kindly before walking out of the room. I head over to the bathroom, desperate to see who I am and to remember something. A pale face stares back at me from the mirror and long, red hair frames my face and accents my green eyes. I close my eyes and try to reclaim my memories. Suddenly something clicks and my hard work pays off as a word enters my mind. With the word comes a sense of longing and familiarity.

‘Justin’ I whisper. The name sounded so familiar, like I was used to saying it over and over again.

‘Justin’ I say again before everything turns black.
